Hatchlings

The large dragon told Scratch that he looked as if he might have a story, but that for now they should get him back to safety.

Scratch did indeed have a tale to tell, albeit a grim one. It would explain why his eyes were so cloudy, why he was covered in scratches, why he was so desperate for food, and why he was still alive.

Scratch never really knew much about his past beyond what he had experienced. He had no parents, or brothers and sisters. He didn't have friends, and didn't have a place to live. He just sort of lived off whatever he could find and eat.

He was, however, used to competing with other dragons over game, since most of the areas he'd been that actually had a good deal of food in them were owned by other dragons, which usually drove him out. For the same reason, he'd never had a good place to sleep, either. He wasn't a bad fighter, but his limp always prevented him from being quick enough to avoid blows. That was why this battered hatchling had never really been well-fed.

Most of his wounds were now permanent; including the limp he always had on his rear left leg.

"Where are we going?" Scratch asked the adult dragon. He honestly had no idea where he was being taken. Where they lived, he supposed.

Irah obediently followed Crusher who seemed to have a better idea of where Sky had gone. When they found him Irah gasped and hid behind Crusher, she had caught a glimpse of the red-eyed creature in the wagon. Who are you? she wondered. She had never seen something so pale before and his eyes scared her a little. The others however were only apprehensive about the humans returning and soon they had a new recruit who agreed to follow them back to safety. Wait till Artemis sees this! she thought.

Artemis crouched and followed Crusher silently, resisting the urge to shake and fluff herself off excess water clinging to her fur. Once she saw the albino hatchling she snorted unexpectedly. She definitely did not like the albinos; they were skinny white lizards that looked like overgrown rats to her. But she kept the observation to herself, glancing around for other movement. As much as she disliked the albinos, she detested humans.

Crusher continued to back up till he was ok with there distance away from the human stop. He looked at the Albino and smiled a little "We where just on our way back home. With the danger around and humans as well, there's no room for territory's and quarrels over prey." he said before he gestured to the others "You already met Sky, He's often a shy one, give him time to warm up to you. There is Artemis, she maybe young but she'll lecture you till your ears fall out if you don't keep proper hygine." he said with a small chuckle and last but not least, Irah, a berry loving one that can get a little mischievous." he introduced them smiling a bit as they made way back to their spot by the river "We might run into a few others that did not come with us, but for now, here's the group, your welcome to stay with us, if you do, once where back home I'll train you as well to defend your self and added survival skills and as long as prey are around, you'll always have something in your belly." he explained.

Sky Shiner didn't say anything as Crusher introduced them to the Albino hatchling one by one. He noticed that there was one thing that Crusher had forgotten to mention.

"Watch out for Evil Crusher..." he told the other hatchling, but his voice was so low that it was almost inaudible and if the Albino hadn't been paying attention, he would probably not have heard Sky.

Waking up from his beauty nap, Quorran hopped onto another branch to get better light. Preening his feathers to perfection, he jumped higher, regarding the forest below him. Feeling bored, he started to sing a nightingale tune. Chirping into the forest, several birds were enticed by the call and chirped back. A few unfortunate birds flew closer, realising too late that they were about to become a snack. Shrieking in terror, the birds met a grisly end inside his mouth. Satisfied, he flew out into the wind.

That sounded pretty good to Scratch. First of all, he'd never really had a family or friends, so he might try it. These dragons seemed like they could teach him a thing or two... And he hates to admit it, but he was starving.

In addition to Sky Shiner and the orange dragon, there was a very shiny dragon and a smaller hatchling. If he didn't know any better, he'd say the shiny one didn't like him. Most dragons he encountered didn't like him, but why would they rescue him if they hated him?

He knew precious little about dragonkind, or even about himself. The most he knew about breeds was that he was an albino. He most he could do was reason and hunt. Reason was the only advantage he'd ever had at the mercy of the cruel world.

When the Albino hatchling didn't reply, Sky Shiner relapsed into silence. It was just as well, anyway. Perhaps Crusher would tell him when they went back. Sky thought about Evil Crusher. He didn't actually know much about him, just that he was evil, sadistic, and had an incredible amount of power. Sky shuddered as he remembered his first close encounter with the bone-platted dragon.

What puzzled Sky was the fact that their enemy had the same name as his friend. He still couldn't figure it out. Was Evil Crusher a relation of Crusher? A twin brother? Or was it merely a coincidence that they had the same names?

What if it was not?

Artemis dipped her head once at her name and padded a little away, getting a good stand on the the ground before shaking her body vigorously of all water droplets. She then gingerly sat down on a clean spot to groom herself neatly, God forbid her she miss any wayward strand of fur. "Are we going to back the river?" she asked between licks and claw combing.

Irah jumped slightly when she realized Artemis was standing right behind her. She stood there awkwardly, acting like she knew she was there the whole time. "We should be far away. They might come looking for...him." she said, finally having the courage to say something.

"They might come back. They only saw Sky Shiner, and don't know about the rest of you." Scratch said. When he noticed that the other hatchling had not called him by name, it was because he had not given it. "My name is Scratch. Pleased to meet you all." The thin, scarred albino have a small smile to the others.

Crusher nodded and looked around "Pleased to meet you as well Scratch." he replied before thinking "Do you need a drink Scratch? If so we can make a stop by the river again, if not we'll head directly for the tunnels. The only place we know of currently, that's safe for the most part." he explained "Once where there I'll explain things in more detail. For now, Irah is correct, we need to continue moving." He stated waiting on Scratches reply.

"No, I'm not thirsty." Scratch replied. "We should keep going."

Yes, it was probably best to go with these dragons at least for now. As a younger hatchling, he had done well in surviving alone in a dangerous world, but the humans might overly give him trouble. For his own protection, safety in numbers was a good idea.

Artemis chuckled at the jumpy Irah, and shrugged nonchalantly at Crusher's direction. "Let's get a move on then." She moved forward, and feeling a little cheeky, brushed her tail fur very lightly against Irah's back, quickly whipping it to the opposite direction before moving off, her shoulders shaking slightly and her amber eyes glinting in the light.

Quorran flew high above the trees, taking in the landscape. He spotted a brown sparrow headed towards him and opened wide to catch it. After twenty seconds, he noticed the lack of sparrow meat in his mouth. He closed it and looked up. Just in time to see an adult Seragamma Wyvern Flying towards him, mouth open. He dived down and they collided in mid air, with the Wyvern biting his wing. With no other option, he leaned in close to the Wyvern and screeched as loud as he could point blank. Directly into it's ear. The Wyvern died instantly as it's eardrums shattered and impaled themselves into his brain. Still stuck to the Wyvern, they fell and crashed into a river below where they sank to the bottom with a big splash. No! It can't end like this! He thought, as he struggled to free himself from the Wyvern's jaw to swim upwards.

Crusher was about to respond when he heard something like a screech, due to the nature of his currently worst enemy, this caught his full attention. Then a splash a ways up the river. He looked at the others "Stay behind me." he told them before heading towards the area he heard the splash come from. Slinking through the bushes and trees though knowing his bright orange scales would be a dead give away, however the scent of blood hit his nose as well. Had Evil Crusher returned?

He rushed now towards the source of the sound and while at first he saw nothing, the water had strange and moving ripples as something under disrupted the flow. He narrowed his eye's and took a breath before jumping in him self. Using his wings to aid in swimming against the current he spotted a young dragon looking caught by a dead grown one. He began to swim closer "Hold on young one, stop struggling and I'll have you out of this soon." he sent telepathicly to the living one.

Not knowing whether to trust the adult dragon or not, Quorran stopped struggling and tried his best to stay calm. The water seemed to fade as everything started to go black. Shaking himself awake, he used his claws in a desperate attempt to sever the wings of the Seragamma. It was useless. All he managed to do was scratch them. Unable to open his mouth without taking a huge gulp of water, he closed his eyes and resigned himself to his fate.

Crusher swam over and grasped the dead dragons jaws and gave a powerful burst of effort forcing the jaws open. His tail coming around to catch the drowning young one. Once the wing was freed he grabbed the young one and quickly swam his way to the surface using his wings and body to propel him as his paws gripped the one he just saved.

they broke surface and Crusher did not stop moving till he had them both on the river bank before he looked at Artemis "Could you heal his wing please?" he asked to prevent too much blood loss from the teeth puncture marks. He looked at the one he just pulled from the river. Once he was sure the dragon was breathing he sat down and smiled a little "Hello there, don't ask you just rest here, you need to catch your breath, I'm Crusher, your safe now." he assured

"Thank you sir... I though I was going to die. For sure." Quorran croaked with a soft, raspy voice. He coughed and took a sip of water. He stared into the river, thinking about what might have happened if Crusher had not saved him. He spat out a stray feather and stared at the shimmer scale." I've never met anyone as shiny as you. How do you get your scales so shiny?" He asked, worried about his looks as always.

Sky Shiner merely watched the scene unfold, at the back of the group as usual. He watched as Crusher saved the young Bright-Breasted Wyvern. Another one? Where were all these other dragons coming from? He would rather prefer the group to remain as it was. Sky, suddenly overwhelmed by sudden wave of shyness and nervousness, almost went to hide in the bushes, but he stopped himself. "Quit it! You're a mature hatchling now, not a newborn! Don't act like a stupid baby!" So Sky, rather unwillingly, slithered past Irah and Scratch, and stopped just behind Crusher.

"C-could I be of assistance?" he asked, his voice quivering slightly. If he was a matured hatchling, he sure as well was going to act like one.

Playfully inclined, Irah swatted at the emerald green tail that swept by her. As it moved away she tried to pounce on it but missed. Before she could attack again her playtime was quickly interrupted by a loud roar, it sounded like it came from the river. "We better get going." she said trying to sound brave but she was far from it.

((Lame I know but it's all I could come up with.))

Artemis trotted behind Crusher at the commotion, curious but wary. She watched Crusher save the hatchling grimaced at the dead giant wyvern polluting the river; she wasn't going in that river anymore for this month. She arched her neck over Crusher's shoulder to look at the damage, then reeled back. "I can try, but I doubt it will be fully healed. He'll have to prevent using it for at least a month or two. He's lucky it didn't hit the main arteries," she replied haltingly. Wing membranes were delicate little things, a lucky swipe could cripple the dragon for life, it would never take flight again.

She could not help but preen at the hatchling's comment. "Basic cleaning and hygiene, that'll have you looking healthier," she declared. "But first... this.. injury of yours needs to be taken care of." She all but pushed the wyvern back into the shallow waters of the river and held his wing down. Her lip curled at the proximity of the dead carcass in the river but there wasn't anything she could do about it. She pressed her paws down on the wound firmly, using her tail to hold down his wing to prevent any jostling. "Hold still..." she muttered and with one rush of current and green glow, she was done. She unceremoniously let go of the hatchling and trudged back to dry land, shaking herself excessively to rid of any possible contamination from the dead wyvern on her.

Crusher nodded at the thanks "No need to thank me. I do what I can to stop unneeded death and help others." he said not saying why exactly. He looked at Sky as he saw the hatchling visibly trying to be brave and smiled "If our friend here allows it, would you like to check for any other injury's on him? Or if you want you could help me get the dead adult out of the river to prevent the body from poisoning the water later? Or did you have something else in mind?" he asked before smiling at Artimes as she finished shaking her self after doing what she could with the wyverns wing.

((Hard to tell who Sky is talking to))

Irah walked with the other hatchlings, keeping a close eye on their surroundings in case anything jumped out of the bushes. As soon as they saw water the smell of blood entered her nose. She immediately grew concerned for Crusher but before she could ask where he had gone in such a hurry she witnessed the Magi dragon surface from the river pulling a Bright-Breasted Wyvern to shore. She breathed a sigh of relief; the wyvern had obviously hurt his wing pretty badly but he was in good hands now, especially Artemis who could heal almost anything from minor cuts to broken bones.

Irah immediately drew herself away from Scratch when she noticed him standing beside her. She didn't want to be anywhere near those haunting eyes of his and she didn't have the guts to ask what was wrong with them.

Quinn was taking a sip from a river as a faint adult dragon's scent came up her nose, she was curious whether it was fish as that she wasn't trained in her smell yet. As she got curious, she has never seen another adult dragon that wasn't her parents as that they say other dragons like hatchling's meat, that scared her when her mother brought back a horse leg claiming it was a baby horse dragon she found in the fields the other day. As curiosity consumed her, she kept sniffing until she fell in the river as she roared for help, her tiny claws moving trying to keep her afloat as her mother and father came flying out, her skin color was pretty much the same hue as the rivers as her parents looked furious as they attacked a nearby bear which they must have thought took their precious daughter. As Quinn's tiny muscles weaken as her heads went under water when only her snout was showing help she roared meekly.
