Book Title: Two Old Broads

Authors: M. E. Hecht, M.D. and Whoopi Goldberg

Summary: Sixty is the new forty -- but why can't we treat sixty as sixty and be proud of it? Advice on living well as you age.

Review: I was disappointed in this book. There were a few good nuggets of information hidden here, but most of it was bland and old news to me. I do not particularly like being referred to as an "old broad" -- fine if the authors want to use that term for themselves, but it has negative vibes for me from my growing-up years, so don't call me that, please. There were sections where Dr. Hecht's wisdom shone through, but the book could have been much more tightly edited to eliminate the really obvious. Listing Whoopi as an author is a bit misleading. She has only a few sentences in most sections and it feels like her name was added to help sell the book. Her personality does not show through at all.

Book Title: Layla

Author: Colleen Hoover

Summary: Layla meets Leeds at a bed and breakfast during her sister's wedding. They fall madly in love. Chaos ensues? I have no idea how to explain this book in a summary.

Review: 3.5/5 Okay. I liked the plot (even if suspension of disbelief happens... a lot), but the characters were awful! The main guy, Leeds? Yeah, he's sorta the worst! I dislike him. A LOT. Layla's cool though, and so is her sister. Also everyone has such a crunchy name: Leeds, Layla, Aspen... My favorite name? The most normal name? Chad Kyle. Yes. You read that right... Chad Kyle. lol

Book Title: The Family Upstairs

Authors: Lisa Jewell

Summary: Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone. Now "the baby" is set to inherit the house, that has been held in trust for her, and begins to discover its dark secrets.

Review: Creepy, but engaging story told in 3 points of view and two timelines, it requires a bit of close attention to keep things straight at first. But the story's short chapters and lots of plot twists kept it moving. Warning: this is a very dark story that reveals some very evil people and events. Approach with caution if you are triggered by child abuse.
