Less vibrant (especially the desert, what happened to that warm orange?) and the extra effects make them look messy. 😕 The alpine looks very top-heavy with the floating mana rocks and more like space than a mountain. Is the bottom half of each image cut off or is it just me? Why are they using a square aspect ratio?

That's a very good question. Looking at the full images it seems that on the biome pages they are 'zoomed in' or something, only the top half is showing... It's especially noticeable on the Alpine because the mana rocks take over the picture, but it's the same with every one. It seems sorta.... Pointless... to make such beautiful art and then have half of it unseeable. I mean some is unseeable simply because the biome 'scroll-part' covers it, but I really don't understand the zoom-in.

I don't think he actually changed the background for other themes or the mobile theme.

 

I think the image was just a test image. To see how it looked. 

 

So maybe with enough approval, he will change it?

 

Because the background looks nice to me in the dark theme as well!

It is indeed just a test image. I like the idea of integrating the backgrounds into more of the site layouts, but I do want to make sure it fits into the feel of the theme and isn't at the expense of readability, so it'll be more than the 30 second hack job I showed.

All of the backgrounds zoom out to fit your browser size so you can actually see more of the background. Alpine doesn't because the electric mana crystals (and their arcs of lightning) would interfere with the logo and menu links.
