I finally seriously started working on my first lineage and I just figured if I dumped them all into one group it would be okay except now I'm having a hard time keep track of my different gens & parents/offspring and having to make sure I don't accidentally inbreed (I know some people put the gen in their dragon's names but I'd rather not do that).

I dump them in a group, and I have a bunch of frozen hatchlings that I can use as separators. Those frozens are usually NOT of the same breed as the project dragons.

Looks like this:

https://dragcave.net/group/47050

or this - remember that the hatchie names don't need to have any meaning to anyone but YOU!

https://dragcave.net/group/47955

I guess if I named the separator hatchies more generically, I could re-use them in multiple breeding projects at the same time :lol:

@Kaiserf11 That's amazing o.o I did just hit 4th gen and am trying to get to 5th

Yeah I feel like I might get confused even with a spreadsheet because it will probably be a list of names and that's what overwhelmed me in the first place.  I didn't even consider a pptx but visually that would help me a lot. I suppose I'll just have to test different things out.

@Ruby Eyes I never would have ever thought of using frozen hatchlings o.o That is a brilliant idea and will definitely help me keep my group at least somewhat organized.

Thank you both so much for your input; I really appreciate it. I feel a lot less overwhelmed now ^^

I just make a group for each generation, and when I get what I need from a couple I remove them. That way all I need to do is look at the dragons in a group to figure out what I need to breed next.

You could breed it to a mirror, so it makes an arrow-y shape, or you could breed it to some other type of dragon.  For instance, a CB Striped River.

Oh, and I think you spelled "thief" wrong.  It's weird that it doesn't match weird's order, but English is a weird language.

"I before E, except after C" - weird being the weird exception to this rule :lol: English is not a language, it's a collection of random grabbings from other languages.

A mirror would probably look best, with another green breed substituting for the CB green Striped, and another white breed for the white Stripeds (because it's probably impossible to get white Stripeds from a green breed these days).

You mean like these poor little horribly named kids I have at the bottom of this group? https://dragcave.net/group/46110

@Mochi

By the way, additionally to using separators in groups like here: https://dragcave.net/group/53158

I usually make sure that the names of my dragons have the generation coded in, so that I usually never breed wrong generations together.

E.g. mixed 2nd gens are separated with one apostrophe, like Alb'aurea (2nd gen White x Gold). Hybrids have the apostrophe in the 3rd gen (as the second gen is sort of the first gen for them, so for the coloured Stripes I have Fragaraia for a 2nd gen PB red, while a third gen would be Fra'garaia and a 4th gen Fra''garaia (two apostrophes), a 5th gen Fra-garaia (one hyphen) and after that I get creative. ^^ Thus I can see right away that Fragaraia x Fra'garaion would be a generation mismatch.

Sorry for the late response, I wasn't even aware I had more replies >.>;

@Jack_Indivisible That is a really good idea. Thank you for your input. I ended up making a second group just for this purpose. It definitely helps to make things less confusing x.x

@Astreya o.o That is an interesting way of keeping track. I really dislike including the generations in the names (just doesn't look appealing to me visually) and I like how your method is more subtle and avoids that awkwardness.

Thank you both for your responses. They were enlightening and helpful ^^

@Mochi

You could use letter codes for that effect, too. Maybe calling a dragon NAME un SURNAME for  1st, NAME du SURNAME  for 2nd, NAME tre SURNAME for 3rd, NANE qat SURNAME for 4th etc. - that way you see the generation right away, too, but it still looks just like a name.

I got an egg from my Secret Santa, and I LOVE it.  I also have no idea what to do with it. 😃  I have no way to breed it forward correctly, but I would like to breed it.

I'd really appreciate advice on what to do in this situation.  I'm leaning towards a spiral, possibly.  Just what would look best in this situation?

An EG of any sort is right out the door.

Help?

A spiral where a like-coloured breed is used as the CBs? Something grey-brown.

If I may ask, what about EGs makes doing one unfeasible?

Thanks! :)

I suppose mainly because I have no Prize dragons and adding other pairs of random dragons to make the EG work doesn't seem like it would look overly nice. It's tough to visualize, so I could be 100% wrong about it though.

Certainly it is! I sometimes throw things together and see what sticks. If going to EG route, I was going to suggest (again) like-coloured breeds, so the prize part of the lineage looks like an impostor. Something like this faux checker: https://dragcave.net/lineage/vIdKo It's up to the viewer whether the lineage "works". I don't think the caligene is very well disguised unless you squint, but I like the lineage! :)

@Jocosa I'm a fan of EGs so I would definitely try to build an EG lineage with that.

If you have the patience for Lunar Heralds and their calendar thing, or for Metallics and their "no egg lol" thing, you could try one of these:

Or something easier (except for getting Shimmers from Melismors, I guess) :

Ha, and I was soundly proven wrong!  Those are all really nice looking lineages! Thank you, very much!

Wait, there was a Caligene in there? They must have been wearing cammo, as I didn't see them!  😎

I know.  😃  Was just playing off on how well it blends in with it's chosen family.

I hope this is the right place to ask this (if not, someone please gently shove me in the right direction :lol:

Mine is a general question about Summers. What are your favorite pairings with Summers? I have some CB Summers I would like to breed but haven't decided what to put them with.  I like pretty checkers.  (Not really interested in the seasonal lines where each gen is a different seasonal.)

Thanks in advance. :)

I did this lineage with Greens a few years ago. https://dragcave.net/lineage/i9eMh  Haven't really done anything else with Summers.

Funny thing, I was wondering pretty much the same just recently :D

You could always use Heart of Blue's lineage preview tool to experiment and see what you like the look of? It's a little cumbersome adding each dragon one by one but it's a fantastic tool none the less. Here are a few I came up with just toying around with it:

Thanks, purplehaze! I like your lineage with the Greens. :)

@jaxalope I have used in the past but kinda wanted to see what other people liked/have tried. Thanks for reminding me of it.

I ended up breeding this; really like it with Balloons.

Also I meant to say; it doesn't have to be a checker lineage. It can be any sort of interesting lineage.

Try and build a mirror image for a mate ? Won't be easy.

But how do you get them to sort properly?  I end up not using groups at all because I can't sort them.  Or has that changed?  Admittedly, I haven't done much in a while, partly because it takes too long to find specific dragons anymore.

There is a custom sort option at the top of the group. It works like the grid custom sort for your scroll, so you move the little tiles around to get the dragons where you want them.
