Posted March 19, 2014 (edited) Hello everyone - I'm back in the wonderful realm where you have time to spare for internet hobbies ! Some things were brought up regarding the cities available, I'll do more than one post to address them, because one is more of an explanation, the other a suggestion/discussion. 1. Nuuk/Greenland It's correct - Nuuk shouldn't have been on the list in the first place. When I made the new thread, I still thought that Hyesu, the creator of the project, would be back some time. (Still hope that, but it doesn't look very likely, as it is.) So I just copied the list she had made, and Nuuk was on it. It sounded a little strange to me at that point, but with a lot of other things to do, I just opened the Wiki, read "autonomous country in the Kingdom of Denmark", and let it pass. (I figured it would be some rather ceremonial affiliation, like Queen Elizabeth II being queen of various nations of the Commonwealth, those nations still being politically independed from the UK. Well, I should have read more closely, and given the matter more thought.) Greenland is an "autonomous country", but basically that only means that they have say over their internal politics, while in international politics and various other matters being represented by/ruled from Denmark. So, like the Faroes, Greenland isn't a nation of its own. But it got on the list, it stayed there (my mistake), and it was already chosen by a traveller, so it is here to stay. Posted March 19, 2014 (edited) 2. Adding more cities to the list ? Well, there are two big questions regarding that idea: First - Do we want to do it at all ? Second - If yes, how many cities should be added, and which should it be ? I think the answer to the first question, at least for some people (including myself), might depend on the answers to the second, so we should discuss both. More cities - yes or no ? As it is, we have 47 capitals on our list. Three of them are currently listed as "inactive", which means their breed of dragon is fixed, but there is no host to breed tickets, and they can be chosen by new members (or people looking for a second city). The other 44 capitals are spoken for and (theoretically) active. (I will do another activity check via thread and PM this week or the next, to verify if that's still up-to-date.) Thinking about the effect of adding more cities, I come up with three things that would affect. 1. New Members When the three inactive cities are gone, what do we do with people that want to join ? - We close the project, only admitting new members when old ones go inactive and their capital(s) are open for representation again. - We allow new members to choose a capital that is represented already, and provide a second official pair of dragons for it. (So people could visit that capital twice, looking at different sights, so to speak.) - We allow new members to choose an European city of their own (maybe with certain limitations like size, number of cities from that country already in the project, whatever), that isn't on the list so far. - We add more cities to the list in any case, now, and if they are used up turn to one of the options above. 2. Breeding patterns It was already mentioned back when the project started - if you'd like to breed an Even Gen dragon, originating from all the cities of the project, and without inbreeding, you'd either have to exclude quite a number (15 out of 47), or we'd have to stock up to the next power of 2 (mathematical term ), meaning 64 available destinations. To achieve the latter we'd need another 17 cities on the list. (And people to represent them, eventually.) So, if we decide to add cities, I think this would be a suitable limit to aim for. 3. Stability Of course, the more people we accept into the project, the greater the possibility of getting members who lose interest after a while, leaving their city inactive until someone else picks it up. On the other hand more people mean more options of travel/exchanging tickets at any given time. The other option Aside from all that there is the option of allowing active capitals to be represented by a second traveller with their own pair of dragons (albeit of the same breed that was chosen already). If we allow that, I'd offer it to new members as well as old ones who are looking for a second city. If we allow every capital to be represented twice, for example, we would have a pool of 94 cities, which should last us quite a while. Posted March 19, 2014 (edited) If cities are added - which shall it be ? If we'd decide to add more cities, we'd have to think about how many it should be - and which ones. Do we want an ever expanding list, and thus a (theoretically) neverending journey through Europe ? Or do we prefer a set number of destinations, so there will be a point at which one can say "I have travelled all Europe, and here are the dragons to prove it !" ? Both has its merits, so it is basically a question of personal preference. As said in the post above, a possible limit would be a number of 64 cities, so once that is reached, one can finalize the travelling by breeding a huge even gen lineage with ancestors from every possible city. (And 8 generations.) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If we go for "no limit" the question which cities should be added isn't as important, although we could specify some minimum standards for application. For in that case I would say that any traveller that starts with a new (or a second) city may choose it by themselves. If there will be a limit, I'd start some "elections" to determine the cities that will be added. (Probably with a first round where everyone can suggest one or two cities, and then a second round where everyone gets to vote for a few cities from that pool, the cities with the most total votes in the end getting onto the list.) Posted March 19, 2014 (edited) If we accept more cities, I think they should be of some political importance, like capitals of constituent countries or similar cities, i.e. Tórshavn for the Faroes or Edinburg for Scotland, the capitals of the cantons of Switzerland or the German consituent states. But I think it should be clear that every city added should be on the Eurasian Plate and west of the border to Asia. Greenland should stay our only oddity. That would work with or without a limit. Posted March 20, 2014 An update on Stockholm: I've spent the last few days raising another pair of CB Pillows. Attempted to breed them as soon as they were both adults, and got a refusal.
