The Unlikely

A low rumble could be heard from the mostly silent ship as it loomed over Nashville. Upon closer inspection, sections of the ship began to simply fade from existence. From the bowels of the ship, a high pitch whistle could be heard and glimmers of light began to grow from the darkness within.

Zeke grunted in response to Carrissa's scolding. He knew what he did was stupid and dangerous but he was used to being on the front lines. Like when they first started fighting back in the beginning. Sure he planned most of the attacks but at least he was fighting with the rest of the team. Now he is kept underground, scribbling in his notebook while his friends are out there dieing for their planet. His mood changed dramatically when Carrissa warned him about the future to come. He snapped his head up and studied her face, 'Why didn't you tell me in the bar then", he said, rising from the medical cot he was sitting on. This was serous and he needed to warn the others. He grabbed his coat and went for the door.

Zeke was walking down the narrow street towards the bar where he left the new recruits when a deep rumble made him pause. Being this far underground meant they got their fair share of tremors but this was different. To consistent and no shaking underfoot. He looked up just in time to see what looked like the basement of a building above crumbling from the ceiling.

It's already started.

Zeke broke out into a run as soon as the road widened out enough. The first dracon beam lanced through the cave ceiling above and cut into the road ahead, slowing cutting into Sanctuary. Earsplitting cracks rang out through the cave system as more beams broke through he city streets above. The Eons had finally found them and they were trying to kill them all in one swipe. Zeke had almost reached the bar when a beam cut across his path and hit a fuel line. The explosion that followed threw him off his feet and into a stack of trash bags. He was unhurt other than a few minor burns on his arms and a defining ringing in his ears. He watched as the flames from the explosion licked up the side of the bar's dry wooden exterior. Zeke hoped that the rest of his team was alright and taking care of one another. Zeke doubled back to find Carrissa. He needed to get her out of there. He skidded to a stop and pulled out his journal. He frantically wrote down a warning and a new point in time. He shut the book and went back to panicking. All around him the city he and the others built was burning. Larger chunks of the world above were raining down, crushing panicking citizens. Zeke kept one eye up and kept running. Hopefully Carrissa could make it to the Northern tunnel. It was closet and there were vehicles they could use to get away.

Luck sat on her bed and closed her eyes. She rested her hands on her knees as she attemted to open a new illusion. She was hopeing for a chaos based illusion but she would take what she could get. She strugled to open a new dimintion and after around twenty minutes she began to see a small light breaking through the darkness. The light grew untill it was all she could see. Colors started appearing and forming shapes, random and chaotic noises formed soft relaxing music. Eventualy the shapes turned into people dressed in fine robes and scarves. Luck felt at peace and relaxed untill one of the people began talking to her." Hello, my name is Gr-" the man's introduction was cut short by Lucks startled scream. She fell backwards on her bed and stared at the wall." I guess it's a two way window..."

Sudenly she heard a deep rumbling and she felt the earth tremble and shake beneath her feet. She sprung up and bolted out of her door, through a number of hallways, and up a cople flights of stairs. Finaly she wasabove ground and saw what looked like the under side of an iron war ship. "Oh, gosh! Big trubble!"

Carissa felt the tremble of the caverns. She started towards the Northern tunnel, running. Then the ceiling started crumbling and panicked thoughts of civilians started racking her brain. It was like trying to wade through fog. She couldn't see where things were falling when people kept dying or they weren't seeing straight. All she could see was panic, despair and chaos. "Zeke!" she screamed desperately, searching for him through the storm of minds.

Finally she found him. He was several yards ahead of her. She pinged his mind and used his eyes to run through the crumbling passages till she caught up to him. She grabbed his arm and kept running. "I'm telling the others to head to the desert!" She yelled over the noise of screaming and explosions. An idea was planted into the head of all the Guardian's heads to go to the desert.

Thian and Hoang jumped. "Ethan!" they yelled simultaneously, rushing over to him. "We have to find Luck and get out of here!" Yelled one of them, the other one nodded and grabbed Ethan. "Come on!"

The fierce fighting between Ryan and the Eon was stopped instantly as the sight and sound of a massive Eon ship emerged. All around him, the remaining Eons were calmly teleporting away, most likely to the ship that appeared. The flaming psycho was the only one left, but all his did was calmly picked himself up and lick the fresh blood off his arms. With a child-like look, he grinned as he approached Ryan once more.

"I liked playing with you, next time I'll bring my friends." He whispered before a flash of purple light appeared. A soft, chilling laughter filled his ears just before the Eon teleported away. Ryan just stood there, a horrible chill filled his body, there were more of them... and they had the same powers as him. An army of self-replicating pyromaniacs with powers over the time stream. The horror slowly sank in, how the hell were they going to beat this threat. He was now beginning to feel the burns all over his body, that alone was going to take a day to recover from. However, he would worry about his burns and clothing later, right now there were more pressing matters.

Ryan calmly walked over to Pooch and Wyrm, the former of which was crying over the death of her bird friends. He just picked her up and held her gently against his chest, rubbing her hair a few times. Right now he couldn't be the aggressive man he was, he needed to be the pseudo-big brother and help calm her down. Suddenly an idea came to him, go to the desert.

"I know you're mad as hell right now, and believe me when I say I want to brutally erase his existence. But right now we need to get to a safe place." Ryan said with a soothing tone, a sign that his personality was changing back to normal. Kneeling down to place Pooch down, he pointed to his back.

"Hop onto my back, I'll carry you and Wyrm to the desert. Don't let go, no matter what" He added.

Steven's coffee break was quickly interrupted by the rumbling. At first he thought it was just another tremor... but then some fifty feet ahead, a flash of molten metal broke through the underground caverns. He quickly gulped down the last of his coffee, grabbed his doctor's bag and began to stuff whatever he could into it. Antiseptics, medical tools, sterile needle packets, some textbooks, a complete first aid kit and his favourite coffee mug. As he booked out of his office, he already noticed several injured people, two of which were near-death.

"Aright everyone, I'm going to patch you up. As soon as you can stand, head for the emergency exits." Steven said in a calm tone as a emerald-colour aura appeared around him. He knew that there wasn't enough life energy around, so he was going to have to give them his own. As he keeled down and channelled the life force into everyone, quickly healing their wounds. The civilians did just that, quickly picking themselves up and running for the exits.

Steven was getting a bit tired, but he knew that he wasn't going to abandon anyone he came across... He had sworn an oath after all. Taking a moment to catch his breath, he began to escort the group to the exit.

Nodding at her friends plan, she started to clamber onto his back before stopping short, exclaiming; "We gotta warn them! With that Promethean on board, If anybody gets killed, it might keep Zeke from goin back to get 'em!" Biting her lip, she looked around wildly before her eyes fell on a tiny rat; poised on its haunches on a decimated chunk of concrete...waiting. Pulling a slip of paper and a crayon from her pouch, she scribbled out a message warning zeke of the new and dangerous Eon before tying it around the rats' tiny neck. "Take this to Zeke" she said, giving the rat a treat from her bag. "Take some friends, too."

As the rat scampered off towards Sanctuary, Pooch scrambled onto Ryans back, watching him sling her enormous dog into his arms. Holding on tightly as they hurdled out across the city and into the dry, sandy air of the wilderness outside; Pooch watched as the streets of Nashville began to crumble and sink...she hoped everyone was making it out okay. Maybe a few people would trust her mice friends enough to let them lead the way out before the tunnels collapsed.

Ethan jolted at the sounds of the explosions. This place was supposed to be safe, so was someone just practicing their explosion powers? Apparently that didn't seem to be the case when the twins jumped him. They were under attack. He allowed himself to get dragged off by the twins, getting his footing, trying his best to place a charm on everyone he could, although it was quite hard to focus when everyone was moving so he settled for just himself and the twins.

"She said she was going to practice her powers." he gripped his coin tightly, failing to keep his breathing even. He felt completely lost, the only place he knew was the bar, but flashes kept coming back to him as the place was destroyed around him.

Luck raced back into the dark and crumbling halls of the under ground base. She hurriedly went from room to room searching for anyone really. Finally, she ran down the hall leading to the bar where she saw Hoang, Ethan, and Thiang unning her way. "Come on! Hurry!" She turned around and ran back up the dimly lit corridors. Cracks formed on the ceiling and walls as small bits of stone fell." Guys, we gotta be ready to fight when we get outa here. Its an Eon ship! Possibly more than one." She shouted, still running. She handed each of them guns that she had picked up on the way down.

Thalia had grabbed her bag and slung it over her shoulder when the attack hit. The resounding quake shook her to the ground, knocking her to her knees. Instead of the being angry or mad, she smiled a little and let out a quick breath that could be mistaken for a laugh. "That's what I get for trying to go on a second mission in a row I guess." without further ado, she ran out, her shadow larger than is should be as she was using it to keep the walls up all around her. She made it to the bar, acknowledged the twins, Ethan, and Luck, then made her way up the stairs. She knew how to run fast, and so she wasn't out of breath when she made it topside, but she still checked behind her to make sure the others made it out okay. She'd go back in for them, but leave the weapons out in the sanctuary, since that was probably their only defence right now.

Ethan was relieved when he saw Luck, that saved them the time it would take form her, but that alone wouldn't get her out safe. he was about to place a charm on her but Thalia ran past, so instead he put it on her instead. He then placed a charm on Luck right after that. "Do we have to fight? Any way we can just stall or distract them and escape?" If the memory that he had recovered a bit served him correctly direct encounters weren't exactly his thing; freak accidents and unlikely chains of events however were his strong point. Luck's illusions could be used for distractions as well but he wasn't exactly sure how her powers worked. As for the twins, he just knew that one of them could copy stuff but not what the other one did.

Navi grabbed Thalia's leg as she ran past. "H-help me..." A peice of rubble had collapsed on her, and it looked like she was having a hard time breathing.

Once Ryan saw the tiny rat disappear with the message, he scooped up Wyrm in his arms and booked it, with Pooch in toll. It was hard enough going at a pace that didn't cause the wind to rip Pooch off his back, but he had to watch out for the lasers and orbital bombardment. Ever laser was just another detour for him, since he knew Pooch and Wyrm couldn't take a hit. Hell, Ryan didn't think he could take more than three. Entire streets were sinking around him, the sounds of concrete and cobblestone filled his ears. The hardest part was that there was nothing he could do to stop it... he wanted to tear that ship apart piece by piece. But right now, he had to get them to safety.

Eventually, he managed to get past the outskirts of the city, he couldn't sense the explosions anymore, he couldn't feel them vibrate his body. As they began to reach the sandy plains, Ryan slowed to a complete stop. He placed Wyrm on the ground, ruffing up his fur with a smirk.

"You okay Kiddo? Got pretty chaotic out there." Ryan asked as he crouched down to let Pooch off, his gaze still upon the Eon ship.

Once Steven's group got topside, he began to make the rounds to the others that got out, tending to their injures and wounds.

"We got enough vehicles to ensure that everyone gets out safely, just remain calm and remember the emergency plan." Steven kept on saying as he treated everyone he could. Eventually, he got to Thalia and Navi, the latter of which somehow had gotten a piece of rubble on top of her.

"Hold still, you might feel a warming sensation." Steven muttered as he pushed the rubble off her before crouching nearby. Rubbing his hands together, his hands glowed brightly with the emerald green color. He then shoved his hands onto Navi's body, pushing the regenerating energy into her body.

Navi whimpered, and emitted white smoke as she healed. "Ow." She whispered, but didn't complain other than that. Her wounds sealed, then she felt the healing from inside. "Thank you." She mumbled to Steven, and used him to get up. "Thank you."

"Come on, I should be able to keep any more rubble from falling on you if you keep up." Thalia said, extending the reach of her shadow further, and holding up the ceiling as it fell apart in places. Rocks hovered in place, the most she could accomplish at the moment. Expending too much energy meant death, and she knew better than to trust the shadows completely. Her grip could erode if her shadow 'evaporated' off of it as the sun moved. "Come on! There's not enough time to let you heal all the way, and if you don't hurry your censorkip.gif up I'm probably gonna ditch you!"

Zeke did not slow down when Carrissa grabbed his arm. Partially because of the urgency of the situation, and partially because the ceiling was beginning to come down in bigger chunks. As they neared the Northern tunnel, his blood ran cold at the sight of the entrance completely blocked off but fallen debris. He did not slow and charged towards the wall of rubble with Carrissa in tow. In and instant, they were standing on the other side of the wall in complete darkness. For now they were relatively safe. Zeke paused and fumbled for his flashlight he kept in one of his many pockets. The small LED light cut only a small shaft out of the inky darkness. Most of the trucks stored in the tunnel were crushed under the fallen rubble from the initial attack. They finally located one at the front of the pack and Zeke climbed in. He tossed his pack in the back seat and looked in the ignition. They were in luck, they keys were still here and they had a little under a half tank of gas. Zeke slipped into the driver seat and unlocked the door for Carrissa, "Climb in, we can drive this till it dies then....", he trailed off. He didn't want to say it but he really had no idea where to go from there. He had no plan. He also knew that Carissa knew that they didn't stand a chance now. Sanctuary was their last stand. That was where the resistance was based and now they were dead. He knew that The Guardians were not enough to stop a whole nation of Eons. They were more advanced. They had far greater numbers. They had much better firepower. Zeke put the truck in drive and screamed out of the tunnel and into the desert.

((Short timeskip))

Zeke could see the massive cloud of black smoke billowing from the city from his rear view mirror. The Eon's ship was hidden from view but had long stopped firing. They had probably sent in a team to rid the rubble of any survivors. The hope of earth was burning as Nashville in sank into the ground. A whole city was just gone. Collapsing onto another city. Zeke's face was stone. He had not said a word since they left the hell the Eons created of their home. He didn't see another emergency vehicle on his way out. As far as he knew, no one got out. He was sure that a few Guardians got out alive but he had no way of contacting them. A squat structure began to appear in the distance through the veil of heat rising off the cracked red earth. That was the only solid thing they had seen other than dead trees so that's what he was aiming for. He guessed that they would be there within the hour

Dusting herself off, Pooch surveyed the damage from afar; smoke was rising from where Nashville had once stood, drifting off above the wide, flat wasteland.

"I'm fine" she said, straining her sharp eyes to check for figures, vehicles, anything at all that would signify that some of the other guardians had made it. Seeing nothing, she and Ryan shared a long space of silence.

"What do we do if we're the only ones left?" She whispered. She imagined that they could survive out here; she and Ryan had her coyote brothers, her vulture friends and the desert mice loved her as family.... but how could they be expected to continue fighting an army with a troop made of desert dogs and cranky birds?

"We should send the coyotes out to look for survivors" She said, turning to face Ryan "If anybody can track anything out here, it's gonna be my mate Callah; 's almost spooky. She has a den about a half mile East of here."

Nodding resolutely, she eyed Ryan with restless ferocity; it was up to them now, nobody else besides perhaps Carissa or Navi could locate any survivors, and who the hell knew if they were still alive and kicking.

"I highly doubt the good doc would just let anyone die under his watch, crazy old censorkip.gif***" Ryan muttered as he kicked a small rock, turning his attention to the ever increasing desertification. Hard to believe this used to be full of green, now it was just like anywhere else, arid. Ryan's head was already running various ideas through his head. He'd be fine on a cup of water and some food every four or so days, it was Pooch he was worried about. He was worried she wouldn't eat anything he killed, and the lack of vegetation was making things easier.

"Track them down if you can, but don't over exert yourself." He said, the idea Pooch had was good, but he knew that the other Guardians were good enough to get out, or lucky in some cases. "Either way, lets keep going, maybe we'll find someone along the way." Ryan added with a small smile.

Grinning broadly, Pooch snapped on a pair of ancient, dust beaten goggles and, whistling to Wyrm, the team set out across the whirling desert sand. She was certain Callah could track damn near anything, and laughed at the thought of the sheer size of the coyote pack Callah led. The only thing standing in the way of successfully bringing the team back together was ensuring that none of her human friends accidentally harmed her beasties.

Dancing across the massive dunes and skipping over rocks and the occasional cacti; Pooch and Wyrm led the way through the faded, crisscrossed game trails still visible beneath the glaring desert sun.

Finally, they stopped short at a lonely intersection of trail, the blinding alkaline dust swirling past a rusted roadsign. Turning to Ryan, Pooch gave a feral grin before grabbing him by the hand and diving headfirst into a perfectly average patch of dirt and desert grass; disappearing completely as they fell through and into the enormous underground coyote den below. Landing lightly and rolling into a crouch, Pooch paused until with a resounding thud, Wyrm followed, landing tail first into Ryans' lap.

"Wanna meet some of my more helpful friends?" She asked, nodding to the congregation of wild dogs gathered on nearly every surface of the undergound lair. "Jus' don't light a fire, and you won't have their hackles up" She promised her stunned and dust covered friend.

Navi took a sharp inhale as she saw her group locked in by the collapsed entrance. She turned wisp on fear, affecting nearly everyone around her. She pulled Steven in too and made it to the other side. "S-Steven? You okay?!"

As Luck neared the east entrance her heart sunk. The doorway had been completly blocked off. "D**m!" She grabbed a small piece of concrete and smashed it on the floor. There wasn't enough time to get to the other doors and so far as she could tell, there would be no getting through this one.

Great, this was exactly what they needed. Ethan began surveying the surroundings, this little explosion had shocked some of the older Ethan's ways of thinking into him. He knew that in a situation such as this Ethan would would look around for thing that would be helpful. In this case jinxing the entrance itself would be a bad idea considering they needed to get out from there, but if he jinxed the Eon's weapons they could possibly explode, although this would work best with the Eons jinxed as well. He tried to stay hidden as he worked on jinxing the Eons and their weapons. He wasn't able to put something too powerful on them, but perhaps the fact that they had many chances of something happening would cause enough commotion for them to escape.

"If you copy powers too you could be helping me," he said to Hoang and Thian. He had no idea which one did the transforming thing earlier or even which one was Thian and which one was Hoang.

Pooch grinned as a large, lean coyote separated herself from the shadows of one of the many tunnels leading to and from the underground den; her honey-blonde fur shining in the light as she stalked silently across the floor.Whooping loudly, Pooch threw herself onto the enormous canine and as they wrestled playfully, she heard Ryan let out a huff of breath as a crowd of pups mobbed him, nipping at his ears and fingers; welcoming him to their home.

Wriggling her head from underneath Callahs' enormous furry neck, Pooch smiled at Ryan, the poor guy was obviously trying to be as gentle as possible, but the herd of pups was taking complete advantage of him, covering him in a heap of yips and brindle fur."OI" she shouted across the crowded den "Callah says she'll send as many friends as we need; they're already above ground and scoutin as we speak... they set out as soon as they felt the quakes that hit Sanctuary." Seeing Ryans' doubtful glance, Pooch clarified; "Coyotes got their speed n their wits, how the hell else do ya think they survive in a bit of hell like this?"

Carefully picking himself free from the squirming pile of puppies, Ryan hopped back through the camoflagued opening in the high, domed cieling. Emerging through the other side, he stopped to inspect Callahs troops;only to see nearly a score of coyotes trotting out across the dry desert plains with military precision. He cocked a shrewd eyebrow, impressed; it was only a matter of time until those who'd gotten out before Sanctuarys' collapse were regrouped and re-directed back to their location.

Padding quickly across the sand, a trio of coyotes travelled across the desert, following the scent of humans back to what was once Sanctuary. Stopping to sniff something in the wispy sand, the three held a moments' silent conference before changing direction to follow a lonely set of jeep tracks weaving their way from the rubble of Nashville and out across the dunes.
