Posted October 17, 2013 (edited) Because any number above X would change that value so it is no longer X, but X plus some other number, say Y. Then the new unknown wouldn't be X, but X + Y, for a total of Z. To keep it simple, TJ decided to only let players have a maximum of X eggs/hatchies.
