Book Title: Bloodhound

Author: Tamora Pierce

Rating: 4.5/5

Review: I didn't expect to love this one as much as the first -- I mean, how can hunting money forgers hold a candle to catching child murderers? I was pleasantly surprised. I did not expect her to be paired with Goodwin but no Tunstall (and next book is Tunstall but no Goodwin?), to get a scent hound (<3), or to not have Pounce/Faithful with her (D:). I actually thought that last wasn't handled as well as it could be. "Business with the stars" my left foot -- Pounce would have inevitably been a Deus ex Machina and she didn't want that to happen, but she could have written him out (and back in) a bit more subtlety than she did. That said, she made a white collar crime as enthralling as a murder. Dale was a pleasant surprise, even if it was doomed to fail. Corruption at the top, a kingdom's fate hanging in the balance, and three Dogs eager to hunt... Couldn't put it down!

Review: Every word sings beauty, sings sweet sorrow. Hard to put your finger on just how or where or why. Can't really say much more than that -- my head is too full.

Book Title: No Place Like Magic ~R~

Author: E. D. Baker

Review: I reread this cause last time I read it, I didn't think it was as good as the rest of the Princess Frog series. Rereading it again, I still think that. *sigh*

Book Title: Flight Risk

Author: Kim Baldwin

Review: I liked this. Both the main girls got cuffed! Ok, that's not the only reason I liked it. Exploding plane, exploding helicopter, mob hits, bullets flying and Greece. Whats not to love?

Book Title: Fireside

Author: Cate Culpepper

Review: I also liked this. A child ghost following another girl for as long as the ghost can remember (until the other girl is an adult). An abuse shelter. A hot doctor. A teenager getting a tattoo. And a woman with a gun. Fun times!

Book Title: Jacob's Ladder

Author: Z. A. Maxfield

Review: Not as good as books 1 & 2. A few characters from those books were missing in this one and we never do discover who hit Jordan on the head in book 2! I was hoping that would come out in this one and was very disappointed it didn't.

Book Title: Shot by Both Sides

Author: Meisei Goto

Rating: 4.5/5

Review: A very good stream-of-consciousness story about a middle-aged Japanese repatriated man who on one morning suddenly remembers an overcoat he had twenty years ago when he arrived to Tokyo from Kyushu, and about how he goes around places he knew during the time when his coat might have gone during one day, remembering people, places, the consequences of losing in a war, but not being able to remember what became of that coat. It manages to be both a somewhat light-hearted and striking read at the same time.

Book Title: The Sins of the Forgotten

Author: D. King

Review: I already checked to see if this was acceptable. I quite enjoyed this, even if the author didn't break up his scenes. That was a bit annoying and I had to keep rereading when he switched a scene. Good characters, good plot, good ending.

Book Title: Mercure

Author: Amelie Nothomb

Review: Probably the creepiest of Nothomb's books I've read so far. It tells an intricate tale about the power of a well-crafted lie in manipulating other people's lives.

Book Title: Lord of the Changing Winds

Author: Rachel Neumeier

Rating: 5/5

Review: It's amazing. An extremely unique take on griffins. The characters face difficult, impossible situations -- and sometimes they are wrong, and yet the book is not some sort of depressing angst fest. An excellent mix of suspense and despair and victory! Makes me want to go visit the desert, even though I hate the heat.

Book Title: What the Night Knows

Author: Dean Koontz

Review: This was the first Dean Koontz book I've actually read, not listened too. It seems like I got jipped a bit. It usually takes at least 10 hours to listen to a Dean Koontz book and this one took me about 5. I liked it, though I wish I would have listened to it.

Book Title: Blood of the Fold

Author: Terry Goodkind

R&R: Third book in the Sword of Truth series, and it's still pretty good. There's always a lot of stuff going on in different places at once, so it's interesting and makes you want to hurry up and read it. I have to say, though, Kahlan is getting too clingy. I understand her being worried, but the way she shows it makes it feel like a teen romance novel sometimes.

I read two of these yesterday and two of them today. In case anyone is wondering about how quickly I was able to read these books, I'm recovering from leukemia and have nothing much to do right now except read and play various games. And I read like this when I was in school too. biggrin.gif
