Posted December 17, 2010 Book Number: 6 Number of Pages: 323 Book Title:Magician: Apprentice Author: Raymond E. Feist This is an amazing book. I have to read more, I mean, the title character [does not type] and I have to find out what happens! At the start it is similar to the beginning of the Ranger's Apprentice series, but it does not follow the same line, and this is an older book, so it is well-written. I highly recommend to any fantasy reader. Share this post Link to post

Posted December 19, 2010 Book Number: 4th Number Of Pages: 417 Book Title: Early Dawn Author: Catherine Anderson Rating: 4/5 Review: A romance book, but very different from most romances in that it starts out very dark and gradually lightens up. For people who have experienced horror in rl - they may not want to read this book. Catherine writes extremely realistically. She is one of the awesomest romance novelists that I enjoy reading. It is clear that she does in-depth research on a variety of things, to bring that touch of realism to a fictional story. Book Number: 5th (re-read ) Number Of Pages: 398 Book Title: The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, Part 1) Author: J.R.R. Tolkien Rating: 5/5 Review: One of the best fantasy stories. Descriptions are done so realistically that you could practically imagine the events happening. Book Number: 6th Number Of Pages: 400 Book Title: Jumper Cable Author: Piers Anthony Rating: 5/5 Review: Another book in the Xanth series that makes me wish I lived in Xanth. This one is the 33rd in the Xanth series. I loved this one, one of his better Xanth novels, I think. Weaves mystery, adventure, mishaps into a book that can't be put down once begun. I'm looking forward to reading the new one - Knot Gneiss, recently came out so that's a total of 34 Xanth novels... Proflic writer! Book Number: 7th (re-read, lol) Number Of Pages: 320 Book Title: Dragon on a Pedestal (Xanth Novels) Author: Piers Anthony Rating: 5/5 Review: I adore this one, probably my favorite, too. I was introduced to the world of Xanth with this novel. I did not know nor understand what puns were, not until maybe years later. Once I understood what puns were, the reading of the Xanth novels became even more novel because I wasn't just imagining living in Xanth, I was also learning new nuances to the English language - improving my skill at writing and reading. Being deaf, that has been big for me - anything that helps me improve my skill at writing or reading makes a book even more awesome. I love the way Piers Anthony writes. Book Number: 8th (re-read) Number Of Pages: 352 Book Title: A Spell for Chameleon (Xanth, Book 1) Author: Piers Anthony Rating: 5/5 Review: I love this one - you can tell that it's one of the earliest Xanth books by the fact there wasn't as much character development yet, that the land is largely unknown. (I'm rereading all the xanth books so for now, expect Xanth lore from me, lol.) Word of advice - some people who read the books as a teenager, some will find the books distasteful as an adult. However, I note that the books are targeted at a general audience, and of course... it's impossible to write so that everyone likes. There's always going to be someone who dislikes something. Always. Lewis Rating: 4/5 Book Number: 56 Number of pages: 369 pgs Book Title: The Imposter Author: Celeste Bradley Rating: 3/5 Review: Had me giggling. Book Number: 57 Number of pages: 194 pgs Book Title: Truthful Change [e-book] Author: Jane Davitt and Alexa Snow Rating: 4/5 Book Number: 58 Number of pages: 336 pgs [paperback] Book Title: Wondrous Strange [e-book] Author: Lesley Livingston Rating: 2/5 Review: It had such promise, and it disappointed. The premise intrigued, but the writing was flat and immature. The characters were two dimensional, not well developed, and did not grow. Questions were left unanswered, certain plot developments were glossed over, and there was a serious lack of character introspection, which would have given the book more depth. The romance was poorly written. It seemed as if one moment they are somewhat friendly strangers, and the next in love. It also suffered from a case of tell than show; much of the book seemed to be a narrative of backstory and/or explanations with little action or dialogue to advance the storyline. What dialogue there was was awkward. The more I read, the more distant I felt from characters and book. As much as I wanted to like this book (and I liked the humor and the author's use of Shakespeare and Celtic myths; has made me interested in reading up on both), this book had too many flaws for me to fully enjoy. I may or may not get around to reading the next book. Book Number: 59 Number of pages: 251 pgs [paperback] Book Title: Northanger Abbey [e-book] Author: Jane Austen Rating: 2/5 Review: As much as I like Jane Austen, I found this book as difficult to finish as I did Emma. Miss Catherine Morland was charming and more attractive to me as a heroine than Emma was in one respect, but she was also young, silly, and imaginative. I was unable to relate to her just as I was unable to relate to Emma's snobbery. Unlike Emma, which I managed to complete with relative ease once I managed to get past Chapter 5, I had to force myself to complete Northanger Abbey once I got to Chapter 20. I really liked Mr. Henry Tilney. He seemed like such an amiable young man, and while I could accept that Catherine was very partial to him, I could not believe that Henry loved her as much as she seemed to love him. There were other problems with the story, such as the rushed ending, the use of a deus ex machina in the form of Eleanor Tilney's marriage, etc. But what really bothered me was that I could not help but to compare the love story of Northanger Abbey, which seemed immature and fragile, with that of Pride & Prejudice, Emma, Persuasion, Mansfield Park, and Sense & Sensibility, and find the entire book lacking. This is not to say that I found this a terrible book. It was light-hearted and silly, but it was not for me. Book Number: 60 Number of pages: 104 pgs [paperback] Book Title: A Christmas Carol [e-book] Author: Charles Dickens Rating: 3/5 Review: It's been a long while since I last read Dickens. I like the language. Having just finished Northanger Abbey, all the ghostliness in this book made me think of how Catherine would have reacted. As I read, I recall fragments of A Christmas Carol on Broadway, which I had seen years ago. I think I prefer the musical to the book though. Yet, I did enjoy the book. The story has echoes of a parable in the Bible, as well as lessons about generosity, compassion, and thanksgiving. Edited December 31, 2010 by Maladroit Share this post Link to post

Posted December 25, 2010 (edited) Book Number: 13 Number Of Pages: 116 Book Title: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (re-read) Author: C.S. Lewis Rating: 4/5 Review: I could never decide if I liked this one or Prince Caspian better. (I do believe I shall have to re-read that one, as well.) I recently saw the movie for this, and I wanted to re-read the book to see how the two compared. There were certain things I definitely remembered -- Eustace getting turned into a dragon, for example. Lucy and the magician's book. Slavers in the Lone Islands. Ramandu's Island and the Table of Aslan. I did not remember the green mist from the movie, and as it turns out this is because there is, in fact, no green mist in the book! However, re-reading it, I realized that Dawn Treader wouldn't have made a very good movie as is. Maybe a t.v. show, but not a movie. It's a series of adventures that the children have that are centered around the ship and their journey to find the seven lost lords; there's no grand overarching plot like you need for a movie, so I don't blame the producers for adding something to tie it all together. That said? Still one of my favorite Narnia books. <3 Edit to add the page count. Edited December 25, 2010 by Danne Share this post Link to post
