Kaharl Rating: 4/5 Review: A bit more technical than I was expecting in places -- it truly is a "biography" of Alvin, not of said sub's expeditions. Financial difficulties, mechanical malfunctions, overhauls, and technical upgrades are all cataloged and make for the occasional dry reading. That said, most of the book flows beautifully, with some wonderful anecdotes about the sub, its expeditions, and the people who made everything happen. The author conducted interviews with hundreds of people and includes actual conversations that happened as discoveries were being made (there are transcriptions of every expedition), personal letters sent from crewmembers to loved ones, and telegrams amongst various officials. Truly well researched! The 8th volume comes out in August, and I'm waiting on tenterhooks, which ought to tell you how good it is. It's exactly what I was hoping it was when I picked it out. The first few volumes were published in a serial magazine, and the artist wanted anyone to be able to read them even if they hadn't read the previous ones, so the early chapters are all standalone and start with the same review of the basic premise (a boy who can see spirits/monters/etc. (yokai) who inherits a magical book from his grandmother containing the names of hundreds of yokai she tricked into giving her their names). Recently, stories have lasted for several chapters, and elements are being introduced that aren't being completely cleared up, i.e. an overarching plot is developing and I can't wait to see what happens!
