Glasses and contact lenses

Recommended Posts

Title says it all.

I wear glasses. I've done so since primary school. I'm extremely short-sighted, and struggle to see anything without them on my face. I tried contact lenses for a bit, but they weren't for me, and an eye-infection left me with permanent photo sensitivity that means I need photo reactive lenses anyway.

I popped into my primary school a few years ago, just to see if any of my old teachers were still around. The nurse that first realised I needed glasses was still there, and she had a surprise for me; my first pair of glasses. A few months after I left that school, the caretakers had been cutting the long grass at the bottom of the field, and they'd found my glasses right at the back, where they'd been thrown by the bullies who'd nicked them off me.

Anyone else got glasses stories?

I've been wearing glasses since I was 9 years old. My teacher was wondering why I would always ask for a seat closest to the board, it was because I couldn't see what she wrote. She ended up recommending my parents to bring me to see the eye specialist. I was told to only wear them for reading, which was fine, but a few days later I had to wear them all the time. It definitely made my eyes worse than before I had the glasses.

One of my eyes is nearsighted and the other is farsighted. I remember it being a pain going to renew my prescription because of it. I always had to pay a lot more for one lens than the other. I actually prefer glasses over contact lenses, I freak out if anything goes towards my eyes. I can't even put eye drops in because of it. Only downside to glasses was paying anywhere between 200 and 500 dollars for frames. I bought two new pairs of glasses last December and it cost nearly 600 dollars ohmy.gif.

One time I was playing volleyball in school and one of the guys purposely aimed for my face just so he could knock my glasses off. He ended up making one of the nose pieces dig into my face so I cried and he got in trouble >D.

Another time my dad and I were trying to put some lights onto the tree outside when the ladder he was standing on snapped in half and he fell on top of me(I was holding the ladder). He knocked the glasses off my face and made the arm piece bend out of shape and broke the nose piece. It cost me 100 dollars to get it fixed, that was fun.

I've worn glasses off and on

My first pair I was 11, till I was 17.... Now at the age of 43, I'm wearing them for distance.

I've been wearing glasses since January. I've had vision troubles for about three years, but every time I asked a doctor about it - I talked to an actual eye doctor as well as my pediatrician (I'm 17) - they said I "wasn't quite bad enough to need glasses." This happened 3 times, I think. It was frustrating, since I knew I needed glasses - I couldn't read anything on the board/walls at school. But I finally got a doctor to write me a glasses prescription.

It was the coolest thing ever to put my glasses on for the first time; everything was suddenly three-dimensional, lol. Without glasses everything looks flatter and fuzzy-edged, but with glasses, I actually have depth perception =P

I used to have perfectly normal vision, but I'm pretty certain that I damaged my own eyesight by spending the majority of my childhood with my eyes glued to books, ignoring all those tips like "Focus on an object 20 feet away from you every so often to relax your eyes!" Seriously, I was always reading something. My eyes were way more strained than any child's eyes should be. And it just got worse even more quickly when I entered high school because I was so often staring at digital screens.

I've had glasses since 2nd grade. I don't really remember any interesting stories about them, except that I accidentally sat on them and broke them *twice*. The pair I have now I've only had about 2 years but I'm starting to think I need an eye checkup. Things aren't as clear as they used to be.

I am somewhat shortsighted. The only glasses I wear are sunglasses, though - at all other times it's either lenses or nothing.

Glasses gave me nasty headaches and ... yeah, I'm not too comfortable with things on my face in general.

I've worn glasses for over ten years now, I'm very myopic, but I've actually had bad eyesight for much longer than that. I was terribly afraid of anything that could be wrong with me and having doctors poke and prod at me, so it took long to muster up the courage to tell anyone. Glaucoma and cataract run in the family, so there are pretty big chances I'll have more issues later on.

Something fun now!

If I take off my glasses for just a little while, like for putting on a sweater or something, then I forget where I left them. So I need my glasses to find my glasses. It looks ridiculous.

When senior year of high school started and I sat behind my desk as usual, I noticed that I couldn't see anything on the blackboard clearly even though I wasn't sitting that far away from it, but still not close enough to see it as I should. I though it was weird because that never happened to me before, and no one in my family but my grandma is wearing glasses. Not even she had problems with her eyes when she was young, it came with her old age. I went to the eye doctor with mum for a checkup and he told me that my dioptry is -0.5 on my left eye and -1.75 on the right. That's when I started wearing glasses, but I like contact lenses better because I'm still not used to see myself with them in the mirror. But sometimes I have to, when my eyes are a bit more dry when I don't sleep enough because the lenses irritate me a little despite the artificial tears. sad.gif

I'm supposed to wear glasses, since I can't see anything clearly more than 6 feet ahead of me, but I hardly ever wear them except when driving.

I hate glasses. They slip on your face, there's a large amount of room aside from your central focus where your vision isn't corrected. Blugh. They gave me glasses to wear to see the whiteboard when I was in 7th grade or so (I'm nearsighted). I went through half of middle and high school not wearing them and my wonderful friends sharing notes when I couldn't read the board. Finally, when I started driving, I got a pair of glasses that I wore for a while because driving. It wasn't too long after that I switched to contacts which oh my gosh are so much better. I love contacts.

My vision really isn't that bad (my mom has like a -8 prescription and my sister's up to -4. I'm not even to half that yet) but it's enough so that I can't see signs when driving and things have a vague blurriness to them without contacts.

Contacts scare the crud out of me. I'm afraid anything touching my eyes, and I'm scared that contacts would get stuck in my eyes. P:

My sister was also terrified of contacts but landed on them rather than glasses for a couple reasons (mostly due to her bad self-image back then and not liking the way she looked in glasses). Unfortunately for her, she also had lots of problems with contacts (of course it had to happen with her and not with me who wasn't afraid of touching my eye at all). They had to try out several different solutions because the first ones they tried bothered her eyes - made them itchy and red and a little puffy. BUT she now happily has a solution that works just fine with her eyes. And the plus side of having to go in so much is that she lost absolutely all fear of anything touching her eye, lol.

My mom, my sister, and I all wear contacts and aside from my sister's beginning suckiness, contacts have never mistreated us. We've never lost one in our eye or had one get stuck, lol. The closest I came was when I was crying really hard and rubbing hard at my eyes trying to stop - I ended up folding one contact while it was still in my eye, which made everything go fuzzy and weird, but no pain. And we've all been wearing contacts for years now.

But I know contacts aren't for everyone - just like glasses aren't for everyone. =p

I don't mind the glasses. I'm also of the "freaked about touching my eye" camp, I can't imagine putting a contact in. I used to watch my cousin put her contacts in all the time and all I could think of was 'gross!'. I'm very used to my glasses, I often fall asleep with them on 'cause I forget I'm actually wearing them.

I wear glasses 24/7. Mainly because I inherited my father's absolute crap vision (he's like, 20/200, and legally blind without glasses). Currently my vision is around 20/90, so I can't really function without my lenses haha. rolleyes.gif

And I refuse to wear contacts, partially because they freak me out and partially because I'm just really attached to glasses being a part of my "look." xd.png

I wear glasses. Used to wear contact lenses, but after a while, they started to irritate my eyes, so went back to glasses. Wore wire frames in junior school. Remember I was sat in assembly one time, and one of my lenses just suddenly popped out of the frames. Turn's out the screw had worked itself loose over time, and fallen off. Never did find it.

Same for me, except, A) the guy didn't do it on purpose, B ) he hit me on the side of my head and C) the glasses broke in half and my father had to fix them with glue.

I was more upset for the broken glasses and my friend feeling bad that for the pain.

Mum wore contacts for years, then all of a sudden she developed an infection. I think I'll stick to glasses.

Both of my parents wore glasses and had really bad eyesight so genetically I would too. I had to wear glasses since I was 9, although I didn't start wearing them 24/7 until I was 12 because my eyes were getting worse every year (and it was too annoying to keep taking them off/out of the case). I'm very nearsighted and without my glasses, I literally have to look at normal text (on a computer) 10 cm away from my face. My vision has stabilised, I think. I've never tried contact lenses; I'm kinda scared of them. xd.png

I think I've gone through 4 pairs of glasses, each with VERY varying prescriptions. I think it's due to genetics, gaming, and studying, and I used to study with my face extremely close to the paper.

I have glasses - the exact same pair I originally got. I've never had any further appointments, never had the glasses replaced, never had the prescription evaluated since. My eyesight hasn't changed, at least not noticeably.

I don't know my prescription but I'm pretty severely nearsighted; I can't see most things clearly unless they're within a foot of my face (with text it varies, I can see bigger text from a further distance usually). I'm functionally useless at everything without my glasses. xd.png

This is me as well- nearsighted and still have the same pair I've always had smile.gif Though I do occasionally need to keep going back for glaucoma checkups as it runs in my family.

My eye sights not too bad, and is due to astigmatism, I know that the two lenses are of different strengths but it sits around -1. For the most part I can get away with not wearing them. I had to use them at uni to read the whiteboards until I graduated, and I still use them now for driving or if I'm using my laptop while tired.

I'm not a fan of wearing them, but I very much hate contacts or just getting anything near my eyes (yeah I'm squirmer when it comes to eye drops), so I try not to wear them when I can. Though sometimes I use them while gaming for what my friend calls the "HD vision effect" xd.png It really does make those graphics sharper...

I wear both.

I mostly wear contacts during the day and then swap to glasses at evening. I also usually wear glasses on Sundays too to give my eyes a rest.

I'm 71 now and have been wearing glasses since I was 5 and the nuns noticed I was squinting at the blackboard. I can still remember the fuss my parents made over me to make me feel good about them. I also remember being so fascinated that I could see the individual leaves move when the wind blew through the trees.

I have astigmatism so my lenses are rather thick and I have to take care to pick out frames that are on the smaller side to make it less obvious. That's a nuisance since I can hardly see what I'm doing when I'm looking at a mirror through frames that don't have my prescription in them.

For years now I've been wearing bifocals and they are just great. I wasn't happy about the idea at first, but once I learned how to use them, I can really tell the difference. I can't imaging having to switch back and forth from reading glasses to distance glasses.

I don't need glasses close up, can read in the dark, thread needles, do tiny work, read very fine print, only use glasses when I'm driving. I needed them in high school to see the board, and never got them then. That's water long past the bridge, all the way out to the middle of the ocean, real old story. rolleyes.gif

However, I do have problems with bright lights, and my eyes get fatigued if I'm on a long drive in bright daylight, or facing miles of oncoming lights at night. the eye doctor said there is nothing that can help that. dry.gif

Sunglasses / UV-darkening glasses?
