Technically, it's not. It's a crossquarter day between equinoxes and solstices.  So this year Halloween is actually on November 7th. Christmas is actually on December 21st.  That's why you fail at contacting ghosts on October 31st. The barrier between worlds isn't thin enough until November 7th.

 

Why do people want to talk to ghosts anyway? They've got the same opinions and expectations of etiquette and behavior they had when they were alive.
