The Great Divide

Twilight stands a short distance away from the rest of the group that has now gathered there and snorts at the human's remarks of a cure for the humans' bugs and possibilities of peace. It all sounded ridiculous to him. Humans and dragons were as likely to be able to find peace as serpents and mice. The whole thing about unknown side effects also irritated him. They already had a cure for if one was stung and they knew the side effects of this one. Sure it didn't make one immune but it also was proven to work. and they had no proof this boy's little potion truly worked at all.

Dharsii slipped back over the edge of the cliffs bordering the Divide, carrying severla pieces of white cloth and a few plants in her jaws. She managed to glide down to the ground inside the Divide, flight was beyond her at the moment due to a wound at the base of her right wing. She'd been spotted while out gathering her supplies from the human's lands and had been attacked. Bloody bullet wounds riddled her pearly white hide, staining her scales red. She made a somewhat crash landing into a river in the Divide where she floated for a while, allowing the current to carry her along and soothe her wounds.

(sorry about the long post and yes brian has been busy this whole time)

Josh looked at Twilight who was clearly frustrated. He walked closer but kept a polite distance. "I know our kind don't have the best history but it can improve. What would I or another human gain by hurting you? Nothing, but they are afraid, this whole war is essentially based on the fear of what the other side will do if somebody doesn't strike first. I have plans for a cure and peace, please give it a chance and have faith, and help it. I want this war to end, even if I have to die trying." Josh couldn't stand it, this war did nothing but bleed the innocent. "Most of the time when an attack force goes out and doesn't return I see one of my friends lose it cry for days. One old friend of mine...shot himself when both of his parents died in an attack, I believe his mother opetated a tank and his father was a machine gunner, both sent against their will. The politicians know they wil die but send them anyway. They paint dragons as the enemy but they are the monsters! I'll do anything to see them taken from power."

 

Far away back in the city Josh's father, Brian, walked to the front of the courthouse. What his son did and said really got to him, so he did whatever he could to convince people of peace, also because it was likely the only way he'd ever see his son again. Along his right and left were masses of people, the crowds to his right roared in frustration, they insulted him, threatened him and more, "hang yourself traitor!" "dragon hugging freak!" Yet another made a gesture of suicide. He knew this would happen but he also understood they were afraid of dragons. To his left the crowd was different, most were silent but smiled when he walked by. One young woman leaned out and hugged him and whispered "thank you." He couldn't help but smile to her and said the same, it was a relief to have someone to support him. He walked

Into the courthouse and sat at the defendants chair, all was silent and the eyes of hated as well as thanks beamed at him. Then the judge broke the silence, "The defendant has brought in a petition with an...astounding amount of signatures desires to open negotiations with dragons in the pursuit of peace." The court procedure dragged on for hours with the debates swinging back and forth. Finally the judge ruled, "peace negotiations will be held with the dragons in 72 hours in the woods. There will be an armed escort of a dozen armed men and the negotiators are Brian Fletcher, Jessica Carter, and the governor himself, Jason hughes. They will meet here 2 hours before negotiations to discuss plans and strategies. DISMISSED."

Vrans looked at Josh as he spoke and talked with the others. "Place the vial on the ground." she stated in a ordering manner "While your talk is all good, talk has never been the thing to move things along." she stated "The only humans we kill are the ones attacking us an dour land. As you can see your not dead yet. There are thousands of your kind out there and so few of them are allowed to dictate what ever happens. If your kind was so badly affected when you lose each attack force then why not over throw your own leadership?" she asked

"And even if your kind offers peace how would you propose it to the ones that your kind mutilated? Killed there family's? Poisoned there young? Killed there young? And much more. All because you are afraid of us? We have not even attacked your kind. Yet all that has happened. Yes I know there going to have to forgive however, have you ever felt there pain? Some of them if they where in charge we would have attacked your city's." she finished off saying "One voice in your race hardly matters, how are you going to convince them to leave us alone?" she asked

Making sure Josh knew all this was important so he knew what he was doing. He had good intentions but good intentions where only just that unless they where implemented some how.

 

Vita looked at Vulcan and nodded "You are dismissed. Find something to do to make your self useful. With the word on that one red others are going to be unsure of your breed right about now. Show them there's no need for it." he said with a small smile.

Josh nodded and listened to every word Vrans said. He knew peace wouldn't come easy because so many had died. He brainstormed ideas on how the two sides could at least meet on peaceful terms. He did as she said and placed the vial carefully on the ground. "I know that those who have been hurt or lost loved ones might want nothing but revenge, but we'd need to try to convince them, dragons and humans, that unless the past stays in the past it will haunt our future forever. Perhaps some sort of peace council could be arranged? Where humans and dragons could meet without fighting and talk for peace and I could try and talk human leaders into a peace meeting. They might just agree to peace, no one likes to see their own kind die.

 

Vulcan nodded. "Will do, should I first talk to Emeraldan, Serina and Talaren? I want to set things right so they will hopefully forgive what I did."

Twilight tilted his head and looked down at the boy speaking to him still about this peace between the dragons and humans. His eye burned into the kid as he spoke. This little human really believed what he was saying? Really believed that there could be peace between humans and dragons. His eye then flicked back up to Vrans when she spoke to the boy. He nodded as she spoke back and forth with the human child before interjecting himself.

 

"Both of you do make valid points..." he admitted. The sunset turned his body so he was actually facing the two. "Both of our kind are at fault here, with neither wanting to take the blame they are due. There are dragons that are responsible for attacks on humans, I know, I'm one of them. We've both caused great atrocities on eachother and our young." He leans in close to Josh, his snout mere feet from the kid, "And how exactly do you intend to go about doing that, child of man? I doubt many of your elders will be willing to listen to a child about diplomatic peace with dragons. And of course, our leader will have to agree to it as well."

Dharsii floated along through the stream peacefully as her wounds were cleaned out by the moving water. After a few more minutes, she climbed out on the shore and made her way back towards the main camp her white scales glistening from the water that is still attached to it. When she reaches the camp, she notices Vita and Vulcan talking and walks past them, oping she was far enough away for Vita not to notice her new injuries, towards her den where she sets down her collected supplies and rests on her ledge in the sun.

Josh knew the sunset dragon was right, it was obvious both sides were at fault even if humans were somewhat more guilty. "Maybe they would hear me out, I walked into dragon territory and walked out unharmed. Even if it was a simple meeting between leaders it could bring a little understanding between our kinds. The greatest cure for war is understanding. Someone might be quick to destroy what they see as a monster but not what they see as a friend. Many kids my age are taught to see dragons as evil, unthinking beings only interested in destruction."Josh looked at all the other dragons and back at Twilight. "But I know they couldn't be more wrong."

"Can I have a word?" - suddenly said Runara, raising her paw. She cleared her throat and continued - "What if there are some humans, who are not afraid of us, but still wants us dead? Because I saw one, when I was caught. Walked up to me and started to mock me and brag about how pathetic we are. And of course I was ticked off and tried to get him. Guess what his reaction was." - she finished.

Emeraldan interjected, "I can almost promise that there's going to be ones that are like that...human and dragon alike that believe they are better than the other kind merely because of what they were born as, if peace does happen but such ones are still a problem and they won't give up their vendetta something will have to be done about them." Before she responded Josh asked "what exactly did he say?"

Runara decided to reply to Josh first. "He said that soon our demise will come and we, dragons,cannot stop it... that even humans, who will keep peace with us, will die... And the last sentence was right: they--" - she suddenly shuddered and went quiet. She remembered how her friend was killed. The memory was still very painful, so she shook her head in attempt to wave it away, but it didn't help.

Josh sensed she was deeply troubled by his words and tried to reassure her, "Well I'd like to prove him wrong, wouldn't you? There is a first time for everything, we are all going to live long happy lives after peace is achieved, dragons will fly freely and never worry about the bugs and can enjoy life. The man that told you about demise...he couldn't be more wrong, the only way he will be right is if everyone were to lay down and let it happen. I for one, will do whatever it takes for the right thing to happen." Emeraldan was surprised, despite being only a child his words were somewhat inspiring to him.

Vrans watched the others talk. She looked at the vial and closed her paw over it and looked at Twilight "We should inform our leader of this." she stated getting up before looking at Runara "Keep watch here, I'll be returning to get our leader." she said before heading out of the cave. So the cats out of the bag now.... though how where dragons at fault? They kept to there land and had yet to make any attack on the human territory. She got a confused look on her face as she walked on 3 legs not wanting to prick her self on the needle by carrying it there.

"Got it." - nodded Runara and remained in her place. She turned her head to Josh. "That... was the most insightful speech I've ever heard from a human. Really." - she said. Then a memory hit her. - "Uh, kid? Is it true that some people are making some sort of the groups against dragon haters? Heard about it while I was captured."

Josh smiled "Thank you, and there are groups of people trying to stop what is happening to dragons, we aren't alone, but those people will need help to make peace happen. Perhaps I could try and contact them, if we worked together the better our chances would be.

Back at the clan Vulcan breathed a silent sigh of relief, he could stay but he'd no doubt have to explain and apologize not only to Emeraldan especially, but Talaren and Serina. Vulcan walked outside where Serina was waiting, "I came t-" "Stop" she cut him off, "don't take another step." Vulcan halted where he was. "I may be good at healing but don't think I can't win a fight. What do you want? Why are you here, haven't you done enough?" her look turned into a scowl. "Let me explain." "Oh this outta be good." Serina retorted. "I'm deeply sorry for what I did to Emeraldan, it was cowardly and immature. I came to this clan as I was...exiled from ours. I don't want to cause anymore trouble, but to make things right." Serina shook her head, she wasn't one to keep grudges but she wouldn't forgive someone that easy, he nearly killed Emeraldan. "I'm assuming that Vita is letting you stay, but I'm going to keep an eye on you, try anything funny and Vita will know faster than you can say exile, and you did nearly kill Emeraldan." Then Serina had an idea. "You are forgiven from me...for now, but in payment you will owe me a favor, it doesn't matter what or when but when I ask of it you will agree and do as I say, understood?" Vulcan nodded. "For now you should do something to help the clan, I heard the hatchlings' stomachs growling so you should get them some food before they wander off to find it on their own, I'll keep them in camp while you find food." Vulcan nodded and took off to find a deer. Serina walked over to the hatchling area to keep an eye on them. They were the picture of adorable, a couple wrestled playfully in the back of the hut, one read from a book, several were running around while a others slept. Vulcan would need to hurry with the food because it wasn't long before a couple hatchlings tried to walk past Serina to look outside the clan for food. "Don't worry little ones, there will be plenty of food soon, just be patient. Vulcan was creeping through the woods when the smell of a recently deceased bear hit his nostrils. He thought a bear would be perfect, he knew how to roast it just right so that it tasted amazing and would satisfy anyone, hatchlings to elders. Vulcan followed the scent until he came up on a group of dragons, there was the bear beside them and a cave and...a human? Vulcan shook his head to make sure he wasn't imagining it. He looked again and he still saw a human boy talking to dragons, there was an electric dragon, a sunset dragon and a ribbon dancer walking away with something. There was also Emeraldan and Talaren. Vulcan decided to confront them about whatever was going on, and he'd have to talk to them at some point anyway. "What is going on here?" Vulcan said as a few heads turned to him and eyes widened. Emeraldan instantly recognized him. Oh no... he thought.

Twilight nodded passively at Vrans' statement that they should return to Vrans with this news.

 

"I'll accompany you. If you do not mind." he said. "I'd like to hear his input on this directly." The sunset dragon spread his wings wide and beat them a few times before walking up beside Vrans to head back to Vita as well when he heard the new dragon's voice. He whirled back around at the sound of the strange voice. This must be one of the new arrivals as he'd never met this dragon before.

 

Dutifully placing himself forward, Twilight spoke up. "You needn't worry yourself with it newcomer. We have this completely under control. Vrans was just on her way back to Vita to report this anyway. Right Vrans?" He turned his head towards her and gave her a look conveying that he was going to remain here to ensure nothing got out of hand.

((This is very very hard for me to keep showing here with how active it is.... I seriously need it to be more active then a post every week. Just got a pm that I'm needed.... after too long to the point where I'm now needing to start from scratch with my chars ))

 

Vrans nodded "Yes where on our way." she said before nodding slightly to Twilight. She then opened her wings and took off in a very low flight into the forest.

As the others started to go about different activities Vulcan inched closer. "What IS going on?" He spoke to Emeraldan. He turned to Vulcan, in his mind he was boiling with rage and pure anger and did his best to act professional. "Might I ask what YOU are doing here?" "It's a long story...I'm not here to cause trouble, I want to change."

Emeraldan grunted. "Fine, long story short, we kept this boy here because he has proven honest and helpful and is the last chance any of us have for peace and the best way to end this horrible war. Have any thoughts about hurting him and don't think I will not end you." Emeraldan told him coldly. He was forgiving but still wanted to kill Vulcan. Josh joined in, "Ok, so what do we do now? If we want peace we will need a plan, a peace talk, meeting, anything that can get humans and dragons together that doesn't involve guns or fire." Talaren then had an idea, "We could send Josh back to the city with a small dragon, so that they wouldn't be afraid and Josh could ask for one of their leaders." There was a brief silence, "I don't know, I'm just throwing out ideas." Josh sighed "I think no matter what we do there's going to be some risk and so far that plan makes enough sense for me. If we do this we'll need a couple specifics like when, where, and who would go with me." Talaren hummed with an idea. "There are a few that would be good, Vita is clan leader and a good representative but if things went wrong...it would be very bad for them to have captured or harmed him. Emeraldan is a great talker and most open to peace, Serina is-" "NO" Emeraldan cut him off. "I'll go if I need but we are not sending her." "I understand brother but she is very calming, she is a natural healer and is mostly a pacifist, exactly what we may need." Josh included himself again. "Ok, so it's me and either you, Serina, or Vita and whoever else throws their name in the hat." Josh spoke to Emeraldan "I think we should probably let Vita himself have his word in this, it would be wise." Josh nodded as he a couple others sat down to ease themselves of tension. "Sooo, how's everyone holding up?" Josh tried to make small talk.

"Maybe I could fit in" - said Runara - "I've been on humans' territory long enough to learn most of their habits and culture. Maybe I can barely help to make peace alone, but with company? Definitely. But... well, I have to agree: Vita has the last and deciding choice."

She sat along with others, and upon Josh's question, she said: "Nothing much... but I don't understand why these two..." - she pointed at Emeralden and Vulcan - "...are making war with each other."

Emeraldan took a stern look at Vulcan. "We'll tell you later but there is a good reason why, we should keep discussing plans until Vita arrives." Talaren then came up with an idea. "What if we sent you along with Josh, Vita, and Emeraldan? Might be too many but Vita is the leader, you have experience with this, and Emeraldan is a great talker, also with 3 dragons you'd have a better chance of getting out alive should negotiation fail, not that they will, I have faith." Emeraldan smiled. "Now that is a decent plan too, we can show the humans that we are living, thinking, reasonable beings if we do this right, and perhaps and end to the war..." His voice drifted off as he began to think of such a world, where humans and dragons could live side by side, hatchlings could befriend human children, humans and dragons could coexist for a better world. Emeraldan refocused to the task at hand. "Anyway, it would be bad to make any final decisions on our own, hopefully Vita will be here soon."

Twilight quickly whipped his head back towards Emeralden when he explained everything to the new arrival red. He was somewhat perplexed that he would spill such information to a new arrival, particularly one he showed such hostility towards. He listened to the dragons as they spoke about who all should go with Josh to convince the humans of his plan, all the while keeping his gaze on the red before him. Something didn't sit right with him about this dragon.

 

"I would volunteer to go along myself with the ambassador in case something goes wrong." he said. "But a dragon for protection would likely show distrust and we want to show trust to them. I will remain here and aid in explaining things to the clan about this. I also disagree with Vita going without protection. Should he fall we would be seriously crippled. I vote sending a beta such as myself or Vrans in his place. Vrans has experience leading and the sight of a ribbon dancer like her may send out better mood than a battle scarred wyrm like myself." He dipped his head as he spoke, regretting not being able to go himself.

Dharsii watched the dragons of the main camp from her ledge as they went about their daily routine, being sure to tend secretly to her wounds from the humans she had encountered while outside the divide.

Emeraldan nodded. "You make a valid point, but it would be a big show of faith as well if Vita went, they would be less likely to think we were trying to pull something...that would be the lady thing we need. But...what if it was just the few of us and you and a handful of others wait back in case something goes wrong, if it does, wait on our signal." Emeraldan liked mixing the plans, he felt it combined the best of both.

Vrans eventually returned with Vita closely behind. He did not have a happy look on his features but he did not let anyone have it. Instead he looked around at the group then at Josh "I hear there's something going on to do with this human. I will not condemn a innocent child plus what I've been told is.... interesting to say the least." he said calmly "Would the rest of you please fill me in on your end of this story?" he asked looking around at them. "I already have Vrans." he said

Josh was the first to speak up. "Peace. We have an idea on how to make it happen." Emeraldan helped explain. "The idea is you and josh walk to the border of their city as ambassadors and perhaps another dragon to aid in talking, if it's just josh, you and maybe another dragron there might be a better chance for peace, but there would be more danger so it would make sense to have more dragon hidden but nearby in case something goes wrong. Of course it's your say about what happens if it happens at all." Sensing the alpha might not like this plan he added " It might seem like a bit of a long shot but it's still the best chance so far for peace, humans have a saying; who dares, wins. I believe if we approach with honest in tent things might work out. "

Vita looked at Josh and then at the others. "Peace with humans has never lasted. However for what time it may last the clan can rest up and build up again." he said thinking "Josh, your kind has captured or killed the clans delegations in the past before I was leader. Your kinds weapons too fast for one to catch up to me should I be fired upon." he said then got a thinking look "This will also incite a civil war in the clan. Many take advice from the few remaining elders we still have. The others are all dead thanks to the attacks." he said half to him self then sighed "I will need to speak with an adult Josh, you may know lots of things, but you have yet to experience many things." he said "Can you arrange a meeting? And if it turns out to be a trap, know my clan will be waiting to gut humans." he said not looking amused. He was putting his own life on the line with this.
