Suggest a Creature

Recommended Posts

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodo

Its a species of bird that was hunted into extinction.

"The last widely accepted sighting of a dodo was in 1662. Its extinction was not immediately noticed, and some considered it to be a mythical creature."

No, I know that, but I meant the concept of teleporting dodos was a harry potter thing, I think.

I want to suggest a creature!

Species Name: Bighorned Mouse

Type: Mammal

Diet: Mana pools are needed to keep their offspring from reverting back to regular ol' mouse. Otherwise plants.

Habitat: Pretty much everywhere.

Appearance: A giant mouse with horns and a short tail. The horns curve forward for stabbing. It also has tusks growing from it's jaws which were formerly the infamous continually growing teeth of mice. It's color varies from grey-blue. Grow to about 6-7 feet long and 5.9 feet at the shoulder.

Description: These mice evolved from tiny mice that were brave enough to jump into mana pools and drink from them, thinking it was water. They slowly grew bigger as each generation consumed more and more mana, sometimes even bringing down dragons in packs for the mana. The horns are made with a mixture of iron from the blood and bone outgrowths. They do not hesitate to stab predators and run at 40 MPH.

This would presumably require non-elemental mana.

A dragon fruit! It could be the egg of some kind of dragon, or it could just be a dragon fruit. Kind of like how the Leetle tree is just a Leetle tree. It could live in the jungle biome and be a seasonal thing.

We could get a new biome called city and fill it with dragons such as: gargoyles, smog dragons, trash dragons, robot dragons, sewage dragon ect.

Gargoyle:

Egg: This egg sits atop a ledge on a stone building.

Hatchling: Aww, it's a cute baby dragon! It almost seems like it were a statue, if it weren't for its eyes following your movements.

Mature Hatchling: Aww, it's a cute baby dragon! It almost seems like it were a statue, if it weren't for its eyes following your movements. And look, it's grown wings, it must be close to maturing.

Adult: Gargoyles prefer to spend their days perched atop buildings, motionless. At night, they are voracious predators; often waiting until the right moment to strike. They prey on rats, pigeons, mice, insects, and anything else that strays into their path after dark. While normally motionless, they can be swift and have been known to attack, kill, and eat stray dogs and cats, if given the chance.

Rarity: uncommon

Smog dragon:

Egg: This egg seems to be constantly fogged.

(Egg looks like a fogged egg, but much darker. Hatching sequence shows fog dispersing slowly, showing the shadowy outline of a curled-up hatchling.)

Hatchling: Atchoo! What a *cough* cute *sniff* baby dragon. Unfortunately, you can't stop sniffling and coughing around it. (Fog is still partially there, blurring the outlines a bit.)

Mature hatchling: Atchoo! What a *cough* cute *sniff* baby dragon. Unfortunately, you can't stop sniffling and coughing around it. And look, it's been completely unfogged! It must be close to maturing!

Adult: Smog dragons used to be in threat of extinction, but thanks to industrialization, they are now a very common sight among the skies of the cities. There, they waft about lazily, occasionally coming down to the ground for no apparent reason. They are very social creatures and flocks of upwards of 1000 individuals have been known to block out the sun. Their poop rains down as mostly microscopic ashes.

Rarity: very common

Trash dragon:

Egg:This egg just seems to be a pile of junk. (Dead egg is actually a pile of junk. Live ones are in the shape of an egg. Hatching sequence: junk falls off of egg and disappears.)

Hatchling: Eww. While most baby dragons are adorable, this one is not one of them. It looks like a pile of junk vaugley in the shape of a curled-up dragon.

Mature hatchling: Eww. While most baby dragons are adorable, this one is not one of them. It looks like a pile of junk vaugley in the shape of a baby dragon. Look, it's grown what appear to be wings! It must be close to maturing!

Adult: Junk dragons are actually enchanted objects who are not alive. They roam around junkyards aimlessly for most of their lives. They are a relatively new species, having only been identified 47 years ago.

This thread is for suggesting or possibly fleshing out the creatures of Valkemare, specifically the non-dragon ones. You did not use the correct format, either. If you have suggestions for dragons, you can submit a topic in the Dragon Request section. wink.gif Nocturnes are also an in-cave breed that are remarkably similar to gargoyles. You should check them out! And I'm not sure if the other dragons would work, since DC is set in a more medieval time period, which I believe lacks most modern industrialization.

I want to suggest a creature!

Species Name: Mana Plague

Type: Bacteria

Diet: Mana and the lifeforce of magical beings.

Habitat: Anywhere mana is.

Appearance: It is too small to be seen but is in the shape of a dish and colored blue-gold.

Description: They form whenever magic is used and over time with more and more mana being used they slowly form into the plague. It eats first at the mana of the creature and converts mana into more of the plague, then eats the lifeforce of the monster slowly killing it. It then drops and becomes dormant until it goes into contact with a living being or creature, repeating the process.

I want to suggest a creature!

Species Name: Mutton Mellon (or, alternatively, Vegetable Lamb)

Type: Animal/Plant

Diet: Foliage, grasses, and some insects

Habitat: Jungles, normally the borders rather than deeper within

Appearance:

It appears to be a normal sheep or ram... or it would, were it not for its yellow-green coloration and the vinelinke "umbilical cord" tethering it to the earth. Both male and female variants possess wool similar to cauliflower or broccoli, with each cluster's stem being embedded into its watermelon rind-like skin. Seed pods are located on the end of each stem, under the skin and protruding slightly into the flesh. These bundles contain several female and male seeds. Most females do not normally have a smell until ripe, though if one gets close enough they do smell slightly sweet. Butterflies and bees are attracted to them, taking pollen from their leafy ears.

Males have a pair of gnarly, hornlike thorns protruding from their head, the size of which depend on its age and health. Some of these possess smaller thorns on them, and may even branch out like antlers if unkempt. Farmers often trim the thorns as they grow to dull them, though they never stop growing.

If sliced open, the female sheep's flesh has a texture somewhere between cantaloupe and watermelon. Its taste is ridiculously sweet, making it a favorite of young herbivores. Males are ridiculously bitter and sour, smelling awful when cut. Severing the vine will kill any sheep. Their appearance and biology is often attributed to a fruit that was exposed to far too much mana, either naturally or artificially, transforming it into the first of the species we know today. They give off a very slight mana signature.

Description:

Vegetable lambs are often found in herds of roughly ten individuals, all of which share a central, underground root system. In the center is their lead male, whose vine is long enough that it may effectively (and violently) protect the herd until they are old enough for reproduction (meaning, until they've ripened). This generally happens once the surrounding vegetation has been entirely consumed by the sheep. Females' vines are fairly short, leaving plenty of food for the males to consume.

Once ripe, the sheep will collapse and emit a pungently sweet smell that is easily carried on the wind. This is to attract their predators, who will hopefully consume the seeds and spread the sheep elsewhere. Only the females do this, while the male lives until the last ewe has departed. Once this has happened, and once the last of the surrounding greenery is gone, the male collapses silently and decomposes on the spot. Males are surprisingly packed with nutrients, allowing the decimated vegetation that once surrounded the herd to grow back quickly.

As each cluster of seeds is deposited, the males are the first to sprout. They fight among themselves until only one remains, his fallen brothers providing nutrients for the ewes sprouting around the alpha. They can be farmed by those willing to collect the seeds, either by braving the rams or collecting dragon dung. Which is the worst fate is up to the hopeful farmer.

I want to suggest a creature!

Species Name: Albertatyrant dracovenator

Type: Dinosaurian Hybrid

Diet: Meat.

Habitat: Coast and open plains.

Appearance: A bodyplan more like the slim Albertosaurus with a head like Tyrannosaurus. It has long legs and is designed for long sprints and chasing down prey. The eyes are generally red with blue pupils. Serrated and blunt-bonecrushing teeth are mixed together in the jaw. It's around 3.5 meters tall and 13-14 meters long on average and weighs around 2-5 tons. Colors vary widely on the dinosaur in question. Subadults look more tyrannosaurlike with a Albertosaurus head.

Description: It's a hybrid between Albertosaurus and Tyrannosaurus hybridizing. It outcompeted both of them and has managed to reach large populations for large predators, not anything too huge but not too small of a population. It hunts medium-large game with the occasional injured dragon. They will hunt in family packs with 2 adults and 1-3 subadults. The mating ritual is usually males fighting violently to the death, then offering the female the flesh of the fallen. If the female deems this suitable mating will begin. Albertatyrants are born live and take 3-4 years to gestate.

I want to suggest a creature!

Species Name: The Swarm, or the locals call them that.

Type: A plant, we're not sure where it got the viciousness and consciousness from however.

Diet: Meat and lots of it.

Habitat: The forest, but it is kinda the forest itself, I guess you could say.

Appearance: The head or we call the brains of the operation is a gigantic tree, size of Mount Everest, but it doesn't do anything except sit there and control it's spawnlings which we'll get to now. The things that come from it also seem to be plants, they walk on four legs and have claws and a stinger like a scorpion. They seem to be able to communicate through telepathy and see, hear feel and smell through small antenna.

Description: The main tree definitely controls the spawnlings I've noted. This tree uses the swarmlings to kill and communicate, mainly kill. The spawnlings viciously grab the victim with their claws, then sting to slowly and painfully kill or maim the creature, or they will crush the victim under their bodyweight. They then drag the body to the main tree and bury the body near. The tree seems to absorb the bodies and grow bigger from them. The swarmlings will even kill the native Terra Dragons and feed the main tree with it. What we've heard from these Swarmlings so far is that the Main Tree intends to

Species Name: Devilish Frog

Type: Amphibian

Diet: Dragons and mana-infused insects.

Habitat: Coasts and near the lake.

Appearance: A giant red frog with horns. This frog happens to be around 3x a person's size. The fact that their tongue has chemicals to induce their victims into a coma is another reason to avoid this frog.

Description: This frog is dangerous and I mean it, you see this thing run. Now then, this frog is also very good at jumping vertically. They tend to jump onto dragons then knock them out with their tongue. Then they feed on the dragon. They also snap up insects with their tongues. They happen to prefer Magi Dragons or Cassares, as they are useful for it and it cannot hunt much bigger. It also needs mana to stay the same size and Cassare bones for a defense against mana.

I want to suggest a creature!

Species Name: Mutt Bear

Type: Mammal

Diet: Omnivorous, mainly feasting on meat.

Habitat: Forests and plains.

Appearance: They have the signature mark of the sun bear, and a hump of a brown bear. The sharp teeth of the polar bear and the size of Arctodus and his short-face. It also happens to have the climbing ability of black bears. Weighs in at about 2 tons and can run up to 50 mph. It's about 17 feet on two legs and is 7 feet long.

Description: These things are named because they are many species crossed together in a experiment for a new war mount. It succeeded in creating a vicious and strong animal, but not a obedient one. The bears escaped and quickly grew in population. They hunt anything they can fit their jaws around, often leading to deaths. They climb up trees and ambush Horse Dragons trying to take off at times. The bears will take on any dragon that threatens them, and never back down even in the face of death.

Type: Mammal

Diet: Grass, leaves, almost any form of vegetation.

Habitat: Alpines and forest.

Appearance: Winged horse that come in 3 different colour variations. White, Grey, and Black.

Description: Pegasi are mystical winged horses from the mountains. They enjoy soaring through the air and eating what ever they find. Pegasi are commonly known as angels from the north. They tend to get into a lot of conflict but always escape from their predators. Dragons and other humans hunt Pegasi for their lush feathers and their extremely vibrant tails.

Are they intelligent? Are they magical (e.g. flying via use of magic, or just through their wings)? Or are they horses with feathery wings?

It's perfectly fine if the answer to the first two questions is "no." It's just good to have an idea of what you're actually picturing.

I want to suggest a creature!

Species Name: Hydratic Morphius

Type: Other - water spirit

Diet: Plankton and algae, with small smatterings of crustaceans for protein supplements.

Habitat: Areas near slow-moving or stagnant water. Prefer swamps, marshes, coastal tide pools, and mud flats. So... the Coast and the Jungle.

Appearance: The Hydratic Morphius has no set form, as it is a creature made entirely from water enchanted by mana. However, when seen in their true form, they have a faint dragon outline surrounding their core, a solid orb of water that flows slightly from within with residual mana. Able to change shape into anything they desire - within reason to body mass, Hydratic Morphii are a rare breed that placidly roam their small territory. Whenever they encounter each other, Hydratic Morphii may combine into one being, exchanging the water that is the main component of their "heart," before they split apart and go their separate ways. This is a method for breeding and for communication, as the Hydratic Morphii have no vocal chords to create sound.

Description: The manatee-slash-heron of Valkemare. As the lumbering gentle giants, they have little to no defenses aside from running away or melting into the water, spreading themselves out so much that they become practically intangible.

And another food-type suggestion.

I want to suggest a creature! Mana Shrimp

Type: Animal [fish]

Size: Rarely up to 5 inches long

Diet: Plankton, vegetative debris, rotting animal carcasses

Habitat: Water [Oceans, lakes, streams, ponds and rivers]

Appearance: Looks like the traditional Earth shrimp, but with elemental features described below.

Description:

Mana Shrimp are stalk-eyed swimming crustaceans with long narrow muscular tails, long whiskers (antennae), and slender, fragile legs. Each subspecies of Mana Shrimp adopt some features of the type of mana they absorb, with their abilities only working while underwater. They roam the beds of any water source they inhibit. There are color variations of each shrimp, within each subspecies. The following pictures are basic examples of each color:

  • Light - This shrimp has a faint aura that it can control. It can change the color of the aura to any color it has seen, and can control the intensity of the light, up to a candle's worth of luminosity.
  • Earth - This shrimp has telekinetic control over rocks that are no bigger than 1/2 it's body length. It can cause the rocks to adhere to its shell for camouflage. It also can change the texture and color of its shell to resemble the rocks around it.
  • Dark - This shrimp has a faint, dark aura that it can control. It can cause the aura to darken to the point of it being a shadow.
  • Lightning - This shrimp has a minor ability of creating an electric charge that can zap approaching predators. It is akin to a static shock, and is only able to cause a mild irritation at the point of impact. It is used as a defense mechanism.
  • Fire - This shrimp has a minor ability that produces heat from its carapace. It can concentrate the heat enough that it can boil the water around it for no more than 2 seconds, it can initiate the ability whenever it needs it. Its mainly used to soften up tough marine plants, and can be used for defense.
  • Air - This shrimp can gather oxygen from the water, and create bubbles from it. The bubbles are used as a mating display to impress a potential mate, and can be strung together with a sticky material similar to spider silk, which is excreted from the shrimps' mouth. The bubble nets can also be used to gather plankton floating in the area.
  • Ice - This shrimp lives in any arctic areas, and has an ability that protects it from getting frozen, no matter the temperature in the water. It can melt any type of ice that forms around it, and it can re-freeze the ice almost instantly to help protect itself from any predators.
  • Balance - This is a normal shrimp, with no mana-related abilities.

I want to suggest a creature!

Species Name: Blink-hummer

Type: Animal [bird, magi]

Diet: Nectar, insects.

Habitat: forest, jungle

Appearance: Like many non-magical hummingbirds, blink-hummers are small, iridescent birds with long beaks. They are different colors depending on the angle of light, but often flash an orange or golden throat and white/silver or green on the rest of their bodies. They have short head-crests and long tails.

Description: Like most hummingbirds, they drink flowers and nab the occasional small insect. The main difference is their tendency to literally teleport themselves. They tend to be found in places where trace amounts of magi mana seep into the water supply, usually not enough for most creatures to notice. Many plants concentrate mana into their nectar, which is why these tiny birds have enough magic to 'blink' short distances. Wizards and magic-using dragons have been known to hunt them to use as reagents in spells, though their small size, great speed, and teleportation makes this a frustratingly difficult challenge. Usually, there is a more easily acquirable reagent that will work as well. Their reproduction, predators, ect. are essentially the same as nonmagical hummingbirds. Courting displays are similar to the Anna's hummingbirds, except that the male teleports back up right after he "peep"s with his tail at the bottom of his dive.

I want to suggest a creature!

Species Name: Queros (plural Queroses)

Type: Bird (name is aqua+heron+albatross)

Diet: Fish

Habitat: Islands and coastlines

Appearance: Large birds, about 4 ft tall, with large wings and a very large wingspan. Pink feathers (due to their consumption of water mana-infused fish), a black crest, and white undersides. Long black beak and black legs.

Description: Stand on shorelines and catch fish with their large beaks. They also often fly over the ocean and use their water mana powers to lift water into the air and fly through it, catching the fish that may be inside. If they spot a person fishing, they will sneak up on them to try to steal their catch.

They're based off of flamingoes and great blue herons. smile.gif

I want to suggest a creature!

Species Name: Fekuke Oukoh Insect

Type: Insect

Diet: They eat potatoes and sometimes a carrot.

Habitat: Wherever potatoes/carrots grow, they will be found.

Appearance: About the size of a crow, these insects have six legs and three sets of wings as well as about a dozen eyes. They have rather round heads contacted to a longer, more spherical body segment. Their mouths make up at least half of their head and are braced with two, long mandibles capable of crunching through raw potatoes and carrots.

Description: Farmers consider them a pest, but one they tolerate as these insects can be useful in helping to introduce new nutrients to oft-grown-in soil, which can actually prompt better agricultural growth the next season. They're rather harmless, even if their size can be shocking. They live for two - three years and only breed once during that time, having clutches of up to 40 larvae at once. They will often lay eggs in the holes that previously housed the growing vegetables that make up their diet. They fly around looking for new potato and carrot crop every four months or so.

I want to suggest a creature!

Species Name: False Pillow Longhorn.

Type: Mammal, despite dragon-like limbs.

Diet: Will typically graze on whatever plant-life it can find, though on occasion it is driven to hunt small rodents or more mana-rich fare as a result of its evolution.

Habitat: Mostly found grazing in the open countryside. Sometimes can be found being farmed by enterprising, world-wise or possibly even foolhardy humans for their soft fleece.

Appearance: Similar in appearance to a Pillow dragon, except... well, it's a quite sizable ram, or sheep, with dragon-like yet useless wings, a short reptilian tail and scaly two-toed feet. Even the females sport curled horns, though the males have the grandest sets.

(similar in style, though not as cartoony, as http://orig09.deviantart.net/69f3/f/2012/1...an-d4yoeig.jpg )

Description: Once, the common Longhorn ram was predated on heavily by dragonkind, forcing the species into a very particular line of selective evolution. As a result, members of the species that appeared more and more like their most similar dragon equivalent, the Pillow Dragon, would survive, and over time these similarities have built up, hence the new nomenclature designating them as False Pillows. However, the adaptations are mostly for looks, and the wings they sport have not yet evolved sufficient muscle matter to enable them to fly.

Like their ancestors, the Longhorns, you will find the False Pillow Longhorns grazing in open plains, though every now and then their evolutionary development forces them to seek out another kind of nourishment, in the form of smaller mammals and rodents. They also show a bias to more Mana-rich plants when they graze, and will even scale cliffs to dine on mana crystals. As one mountaineer stated, "they crave that mineral".

Care must be taken around the Longhorns in Spring, as a Longhorn's Estrus, or rutting season, can be quite boisterous. The males will clash horns to show dominance over each other, and will develop a breeding hierachy through their battles. That is, if the females consent to breeding. As both genders sport horns, the females are more than equipped to put up a fight if they do not approve of the male.

Now and then, an enterprising and careful farmer will manage to farm these beasts, and the fleece and wool are greatly sought after, both for the softness it bears which is comparable to that of the Pillow dragon's fur, and for its ability to hold spells and charms more easily as a result of its mana-rich diet. Indeed, many clothes can be found in this material, and the more careful mountaineers will outfit themselves in Longhorn-wool clothes enchanted to better keep out the cold.

I want to suggest a creature!

Species Name: Glubbers

Type: Mammal (Been exposed to 'change' through Magi mana, and have violent, 'destruction' inducing habits as a result of exposure to Dark mana)

Diet: In addition to the diet of their previous iterations, Glubbers eat birds, reptiles and most other small animals. They also rarely steal and eat Dragon eggs. If caught, the entire colony of them are usually single-handedly wiped out by the parents of the egg.

Habitat: Dark forests, plains, rivers, basically anywhere rodents can be found (Villages too. They hide under the floorboards and make underground networks beneath houses.)

Appearance: Glubbers look like taller (Around knee high) versions of whatever rodents they originated from. They all have squashed, flat angry faces. They are bipedal, but can regress to running on all fours. Their stubby rodent arms have sprouted digits, and are able to hold rudimentary tools. Their heads are much bigger, although their snouts are usually flattened against their faces. This is to support the sudden expansion of their brain (Not by a lot, but its major for a tiny rodent)

user posted image

A common rat exposed to Magi and Dark mana (Not necessarily in that order)

Description:

Glubbers are named after the incessant "GLUB GLUB GLUB" noise they make. The noise is extremely irritating. Glubbers are the result of rodents being exposed to specific quantities of Magi and Dark mana. As a result, nearly any rodent can transform into a Glubber after prolonged exposure to the two manas. The change seems to extend to their dna, and as such, with their rodent breeding capability, Glubber infestations near civilised areas can result in extreme chaos in a matter of months.

In the wild, Glubbers are kept in check by their role on the food chain. As dragons tend to live near areas with mana, Glubbers are usually hunted by those very dragons. Though the dragons find them as irritating as humans do, they tolerate them out of consideration of the face that they may very well be intelligent or sapient after enough generations or exposure to enough mana. Wild Glubbers form homes in caves, river beds, and in trees. Ground dwelling ones seem to have rudimentary understanding of building, and most colonies are capable of using tools. Tree-dwelling Glubbers typically figure out how to use vines to swing from tree to tree and chase prey. Beaver Glubbers make dams as per normal.

Glubbers retain most of the habits of their rodent forms, such as the times they become active and whatnot. Glubbers cannot be communicated with by humans at all, unless through a dragon middleman. If a dragon makes telepathic contact with a Glubber, what they would see is an amalgamation of fairly violent scenes as well as animalistic instinct. Most dragons avoid telepathic communication with them, as they are stubborn, grumpy little fellas with violent tendencies.

Glubbers are not very big. They reach knee-height of a typical adult human, and a single one is no threat to an adult. Still, they are extremely violent towards humans who approach them, and will claw, bite and stab them to the best of their ability. Glubbers are capable of using tools, as mentioned before, including weapons. Although their style consists of "Swing wildly until enemy dies", it is still a terrible idea to give Glubbers swords. Certain arenas or fighting rings tend to kidnap Glubbers and use them as either cheap opponents, or target practice.

Mages are still researching Glubbers and how their minds function, to answer the commonly asked question about them.

Are they as intelligent as humans and dragons?

(Probably not)

I hope you guys like this idea! Especially TJ.
