The village of Springdale is faced with an outbreak of typhoid shortly after her arrival, and not long after, a major disaster in the form of a hurricane. (Modern readers might note that this is the book that pretty well defines the series as starting in the 1930s, as the hurricane in the story can be fairly well assumed to be the 1938 “Long Island Express” hurricane that unexpectedly slammed New England and remained a full-strength hurricane until sometime after it crossed the Canadian border.) Posted February 8, 2014 Book Number:42 Number Of Pages:373 Book Title:The Witness Author:Nora Roberts Summary:16 year old Elizabeth Fitch decides to rebel against her cold, controlling mother, and it ends in a terrible disaster. Rating:2 stars. Review:Elizabeth/Abigail is resourceful enough to survive for 12 years and become a rich security designer, until one of Nora Roberts' typical interfering males comes along who thinks she needs help and protection. I have nothing whatsoever against romance, and if the 'hero' hadn't been so interfering and egotistical I would have loved this book. But of course Abigail has to be turned from a brave, rich, successful career woman who lives alone, into a 'Cop's wife', with not only a bossy, egotistical husband to 'protect' her, but also his family, who take over her life and start planning her wedding the moment he announces it. I didn't find that charming. Her mother planned her whole life, and she escaped from that at a great cost. Yes, her fiance and his family are warm and affectionate, but essentially they're taking over from the mother. Share this post Link to post
