Kage no Kagami ~The Shadows in the Mirror~

Recommended Posts

David Beale, 17 year old college student, was bored. He was so bored in fact that he was actually asleep in the college library. He was also having a rather odd dream.

He was being chased. He was running through a dyed-red version of the city. This coulden't be happening. The thing chasing him was not running but rather levitating after him at an alarming pace. "You're mere presence her is an afront to all we worked for, boy. I will escort you out as painlessly as possible." It called at him. It looked like a black knight, perhaps slightly warped; and it had six eyes. What kind of surreal hell is this?

Hell? A fitting name for this place. This place will be your eternal resting spot. It...was it a 'he'? The voice was certainly masculine. Either way, did it just read his mind? David stumbled. He fell and landed in a heap on the ground. This was it. He was going to die. And his last words? "Wha-what are you?!"

"...An understandable question, boy. I am one who rules over the nightmares of this world, and binds them to me. The name of bane that binds my soul is... Avaritia, of the Fields of Hell. Now...farewell, boy!!" The flames if his aura expanded and engulfed the long-haired boy.

David's eyes snapped open. Wha...what the hell?! He was breathing deeply, practically to the point of hyperventilating. He simply got up and left. He didn't need this today, he already had a therapist appointment scheduled later, and that was already bad enough.

((Ok, simply post as your characters - the humans only - doing whatever it is they would be doing. They woulden't get a prophetic dream though, that's David's power beginning to surface. If you want to do something similar, go for it. Such as Lucine having a terrible feeling or something.))

Chastity finally closed the door behind the last of her usual visitors and sagged against it. She knew they only meant well, but playing hostess was more draining and painful than if they'd just leave her alone.

There were times she wished just that - to be left to heal in peace. There were other times when she needed the company and aid.

The worst of the physical injuries had healed, yet lingering pain still made itself known. In the stiffness of her limbs, in sudden stabs of sharp pain and, of course, there were the nightmares.

Chastity had medication for the pain and for dreamless sleeps, exercises to keep the stiffness at bay. All of these needed to be monitored and measured for efficiency. As such she was a regular at the local hospital - appointments with the physiotherapist and psychiatrist were to take up most of her afternoon.

((You used Lucine as an example ^-^))

Lucine had a little time between her two classes so she was sitting outside, scribbling in the book she always carried around. It held her darkest writings, things that would scare everybody. She had never been the same since what happened to her, the anti-depressants and weekly therapy meetings weren't working. Well, therapy was usually something she looked forward to, as she only trusted her therapist to hear what she had to say. She never told anybody else how she was really feeling and never made friends after the year of her hell. But this time she wasn't looking forward to it, she couldn't get an appointment for her normal time as somebody else had an appointment then.

Her pen stopped moving when an unsettling feeling enveloped her. She felt sick to the stomach, as if something extremely horrible was going to happen soon. She set her pen and book down, closed her eyes and placed her head between her knees, taking deep breaths. The feeling was similar to those when she fainted, but what made it different was that the normal procedure wasn't helping. This made Lucine panic, wondering if she should skip the rest of her classes and head to the doctor.

((I did indeed~ She just kinda jumped out at me when I was thinking of someone to use as an example, haha

And now that RoD is back, the first shift to the Inverse Plain will occur once all the human characters have posted here))

((Just warning you, Marley is a bit more used than all new Chris, so she may get extra love from me))

Marley was alone, three stories underground, in an isolated lab only she knew about. She didn't technically work for anyone, so this was really the only place she could work in peace. Once someone came down, but they immediately complained about claustrophobia and left just as soon. Something about it made Marley feel safe, though. Like no one was around to point and stare. It was a nice place she could come and be. But that seemed to be the only time she did feel safe. Other times, when she wasn't underground, she was either hiding or really, really annoyed with everyone around her for no reason in particular. It made her hard to be around and ill-tempered. She could care less though, as she was almost sure she had a stalker be this point. Everywhere she went she'd here some strange noise, or something would fall down. Or maybe she was just crazy, who knew? She had learned not trust herself, so why should she now?

---

Chrystie pet her kitten Mr Bubbles, which seemed to be a better name only at first. She thought it was cute how much static the animal was generating. He must've been rolling on the patio cement again, she thought. Ever since the cat had stepped foot outside, that was it's favorite pastime, and no other explanation was very good for why it kept shocking her. It let out a little mrrrow and licked down its slightly poofed fur, running off to play with a loose piece of carpet. She giggled as it scratched and kicked the fuzz. True, she acted a little young for her age, but it wasn't always necessarily bad, even if she was bullied about it.

Runa was having a bad day. First off, the new guy on the football team apparently thought the rumors about her were just tripe, so he tried shooting spitballs at her. When she ignored him, he just got encouraged, ignoring his teammates' advice. Runa had whirled around, and finally snapped when a spitball hit her square in the forehead. She had growled at him, and he visibly quailed, even though he still refused to back down. The bell had rang, just then, and the two had faced off in the hallway, with practically the whole grade cheering them on, even though they knew how it would end. Runa kicked the guy's ***, of course. And got sent to detention. And got revenge sworn against her, beefy older brother included.

However, the thing that upset her the most was what exactly had happened during the fight. The lockers on her side of the hallway had all spontaneously burst open, letting everything fly out into the air. That had given her opponent a nice opening to get in a haymaker on her cheekbone, and spurred even more gossip about her "demonic powers".

She snarled to herself as she sulked on a park bench, glaring at anyone who looked like they would ask about her appearance. Then again, it was quite strange, seeing a teenage girl outside when she should be in school. Sure, she was in college, but she was "rebel" enough to storm off campus whenever she wanted. She had good enough grades to keep her in the school, and they couldn't really do anything about it. It wasn't a huge school, but it was actually quite good, and still big enough for her to get lost on the way to classes.

Runa toyed with the various bracelets and wristbands she had on her right arm. She was wearing her white t-shirt that day, with the black sleeves and wispy dragon on the chest. Her jeans were a bit roughed up from the fight, but she couldn't bring herself to care. Wearing her red, plaid hightops had been a good choice, as it packed enough punch for her to end the fight and abscond the censorkip.gif out of there.

Looking around, she wondered about the impromptu locker fiasco. Nothing like that ever happened before, so why now?

David was just walking down the street, he could still see his college from here, as well as one of the local schools. Life was so...dull. He thought as he traced one of the many bandages on his arms. As he was walking, he suddenly felt an intense, immobilizing pain from his head, no wait, specifically his eyes. He fell to his knees, hands clutching his eyes, the pain unbearable. It was dulling his awareness of his surroundings. He could feel tremors, but that was about it.

Cold tarmac. That was the only sensation now, other than the reeling in his skull. David opened his eyes slowly, before jumping at the sight of the ground. It was red. David looked around slowly. Everything was red. Had something happened to his eyes? Was that the problem. But there were no people around. So it couldn't be that...

"He-He-Hello!" He called. "Is anyone there?"

--------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, in a temple at the centre of this 'Inverse World', sleeping shadows were beginning to stur.

Something rose out of the sea of shadows within the temple. It had the form of large man, as if distorted through some kind of blurring lense. A thundering sigh.

"History, it seems, is repeating itself." The being spoke in a deep tone full of melancholy as his form began to shift into something more physical. "Humans bearing Phantasms... Phantasms such as us... Have appeared here, in the Inverse Plain. They're being here upsets the balance! They could very well undo the great seal we worked so hard to create, oh so long ago." Six red eyes gleamed. "Awaken, and remember thy selves my brothers and sisters! Come, so that we may go forth and purge this world of these abominations!" He extended his now-complete arm. "Gula, of the Wistful Void!" He called as a humanoid figure with a billowing scars pried itself free if the wall. "Ira, of the Screaming Darkness!" Another humanoid figure with deer antlers rose from the ground. "Acedia, of the Binding Chains!" A cat girl emerges from one of the shadowy pillars. "Invidia of the Malignant Shadow!" A female knight descending from the sky. "And last, Superbia, of the Forbidden Spell" A final figure seemingly just phased into existence beside the speaker.

"Remember your names, comrades, remember your selves! It is time for the six Wraith Knights to take arms once more!"

((So there we are. The pain the characters feel eminates from where theu manifest their powers. David can see the future, so it was his eyes to hurt. For Marley, who uses Telekinesis, it would likely be her hands, as although the power comes from the mind, it is with her hands (or her eyes) that she makes the moving motion with. For Lucine, it might be her stomach (Y'know, gut feeling? haha...) etc etc. The Wraith Knights cannot appear until after Invidia's form is completed. Once that's done, it's full steam ahead))

The ebony-haired Wraith Knight let out a soft, contented sigh as his eyes opened, surveying the dark scene around him. Gula, of the apparent Wistful Void, was finally awake.

The black and white scarf around his neck warmed him, though its primary use was to remind him of the blonde-haired him, Kaoru. The blonde-haired him... wait, wait. Gula's eyes widened slightly, as that familiar instinct flooded through him. The hunter's instinct.

"Avarita, there are humans," he spoke suddenly, the volume of his voice making him jump. The mouths on his armour echoed his words with soft cries of the word 'humans', filling the squeaky-clean dark with the old words it had once been full of.

The black haired Wraith Knight seemed to relax a bit blinking her eyes opnem before studying the scene before her. Invidia, of the Malignant Shadow, was finally and truly awake.

"Just relax Gula," she spoke, spooking herself in the process. "Maybe they'll come to us as offerings." She smiled darkly as she said that.

"What...?" Gula turned to Invidia, and stared at her for a very, very long time. The shadows elongated across her face, making her look rather sinister, but ohh, no, Gula wasn't being upstaged. He was a real diva, especially when he first woke up. "Shut up, shut up! Humans are crafty, what if... what if their Phantasms are... You don't know anything, stupid Invy!" he cried, waving his arm in the direction of his fellow Wraith Knight, an overdramatic gesture that he assumed he would be making often as he cultivated the idea that he was a child rather than the cunning assassin he actually was.

"You did not just call me stupid," Invidia snarled. She unsheathed her claw swords and pointed them at Gula. "Take that back right now." Out of all the Wraith Knights she knew of, Gula was her least favorite. "And what do you know about humans? I happen to be more crafty than them."

((If I'm correct David and Lucine are mostly in the same age group, I swear others were older

I'm not too sure

Oh yeah, and when she was missing to the time she was found (2 years) Lucine's face was plastered all over the news, so some might remember he face slightly. Just wanted to clear that up))

Lucine packed up all her things and got up, slinging her bag over her shoulder. She held onto the tree for support as she felt uneasy on her feet. Then it hit her, it literally felt like somebody had punched her in the stomach. She couldn't keep her eyes open anymore and she slowly slid down onto the grass. She was gasping for breath, trying to keep tears of pain from forming.

Lucine opened her eyes, not sure if she had lost consciousness or not. Her stomach still felt crampy, but it was only mild and tollerable. She got back up and surveyed the surroundings. It was her school, yes, but it was all red; the sky, the grass, the bricks, everything. The girl wasn't sure what was going on anymore. She ran off of the school yard and into the streets, hoping to get away from the nightmare but no such luck.

Her mood perked up a little when she heard a voice. She followed the direction from what it came from. She then saw the long haired man. She slowed down her walking pace but still walked over, she had horrible trust issues and didn't open her mouth to say anything.

Gula waved the massive scissors he was clutching at her, the sheen of them dulled in the dark. "I did, I did~" he cried, already gunning for a fight. It was so boring with just those depressing, depressing thoughts. So what if he gave up his life for the world's sake? Gula hadn't done anything, so he shouldn't feel bad! In fact, a fight would clear up those awful thoughts polluting his mind. "I bet I'm craftier than you, Invy, I bet I could craft circles around you~!"

"As if!" Invidia chuckled darkly. Those scissors didn't bother her in the lest. "And what are you about to do? Poke your eyes out?" Gosh, Gula was acting so childish right now it was freaking annoying.

David's ears pricked up. He heard footsteps. To turn around, or to not turn around? He sighed, resigning him self to the fate of identifying whoever it was to approach him. He turned around. It was a girl. Thank god. He was terrible around other boys. He took a step towards her, smoothing the fringe over his medical eyepatch. "He-hello? Are you alright? I don't suppose you know what's going on here?"

-----------------------------------------------------

"Both of you, stop bickering like children. You're an embarrassment to Avaritia! And the rest of us as a whole!" Superbia spat, mind adjusting to her surroundings. "We need to find the humans before their Phantasms awaken!"

Avaritia nodded. "Superbia is right. Spread out. Find them, and kill them. I don't care if you toy with them first, just do it. I must check on the seal..." He said, rising out of the darkness and out of view.

((Yeah, Runa's 19, Chastity is 25, Marley is 35, Chrystie is 12, and David and Lucine are both 17, perfect match, hahaha.

Also David is the only human male. o_o))

Gula jumped, surprised. He'd gotten a bit caught up in the whole fight thing that he'd completely forgotten the humans. Random strings of words had kind of come out of his mouth without him thinking at all, and that was definitely not what he wanted. Then again, he and Invidia had never gotten on, his more jovial personality clashing with her... less jovial personality, and he'd never really gotten around to explaining to her that he wasn't actually trying to provoke her... except, you know, he was. His relationship with Ira, too, wasn't great, though as far as he knew they got along better than he and Invidia did.

Even so, Superbia had absolutely no right to say that kind of thing. She was definitely the kind to sit back and smile as the others did all her work for her, and then expect them to be complacent and let her take the credit. Like hell was he letting her do that! He wasn't going to be patronised, either, not by Superbia the monster girlfriend.

"Shut up, Superbia. At least let your great and mighty Avaritia state his opinion before shooting your mouth off; after all, you might find that you've gotten his thoughts wrong, and well... we all know you'd hate to upset Ava." he spoke in a sharp, sarcastic and condescending tone, eyes narrowed and hate filling his face. After his little rant he sighed, clicking his scissors together and flashing away, using his teleport power to hunt for humans.

(Is it okay if I make human character?)

Invidia frowned at Gula before turning to Superbia. "Fine," she huffed. She teleported away to sniff out some humans she could cause mass chaos to via envy.

((Oh boy, poor David, stuck in a world surrounded by so many many human girls. Good thing he's not good around other guys.))

Lucine inspected him, wondering if it was a glimpse of a bandage she saw, or if she was just imagining it. Wearily she walked closer, deep down she had never been more relieved to see somebody. "N-no... I just opened my eyes and it was like this." She replied. It felt awkward for her to talk to somebody, she didn't know what to say or how to say it. "Are you okay...? You're not hurt or anything?" She asked, not wanting the awkward silence to last. This is what she hated about socializing; either it was too awkward for her to continue, making her find ways to excuse herself from conversing or people would remember her face and take pity on her, like she was a broken doll. She hated the pity the most, people treated her differently when she just wanted to be treated like always. 'Please, don't remember my face.' She begged.

David blinked his uncovered eye slowly. How to answer? She asked if he was ok? No, he already had social problems prior to the incident, let alone after it. If he was unhurt? No, 75% of his body was hidden by bandages. But nothing that was caused by this place, well, except...

"Me too. I felt a pain in my eyes and then wham. One tremor later, I'm here." He said, dodging the question. Actually, looking at her, even with just one eye... She seemed familiar. Very familiar. He'd definitely seen her before. Maybe they'd met before? Perhaps she recognised him? If that was the case, he coulden't ask her how he knew her? It would be humiliating. He searched for something to say, eventually landing on "At least we're not alone. I don't know where this is, but I do there is safety in numbers. I'm David, a student at the local college. And you?"

"Lucine, from the local school." And news, she silently added. "That's true, but I don't like people all too much. I'm an introvert, that's all." She forced a smiled to seem a little more natural but she knew she was failing. "Wait, you said your eyes hurt then you were here? To me, it felt like somebody was removing my small intestine while I was still awake..." Lucine tapped her foot, thinking about it. "Do you think it's better to stay here or to get moving?"

((Well, I'm headed to bed, night all))

The cat girl was sleeping even after she was called out, she slept through what might have been a fight before finally two eye lids slowly lifted revealing scarlet eyes, though not all the way, her eyes were still half closed and they looked like they might close any moment. Acedia covered his mouth yawning, her black tail and ears were drooped tiredly, "Must we always be so loud?" She asked quietly but about 1/3 of the knights had already left. Acedia paused a bit then looked up at Avaritia and Superbia, "Let's go together~" she sang grabbing both of their hands before they had a chance to protest or accept.

(Acedia either has a crush on one of the male knights, two if them, all three of them or none of them.

Probably not Avaritia, I've already expressed my hatred for love triangles many times already .-.)

Runa was feeling uncomfortable all of a sudden. Her arms and legs ached, like she had run a marathon and then did 50 pushups. Her head spun, and all of a sudden, everything turned red. Literally, blood red. She wasn't angry at anything, or anyone. She rubbed her eyes. This had to be an illusion, right? Maybe all the blood was rushing to her head after the fight, and...no. That wasn't possible. She knew enough about the human body to determine that. Maybe she was crazy.

Ira heard the sound of arguments and sighed. He knew who that was. Rubbing his temples, he barked, "Shut up, all of you!" Sure, Avarita was their leaer, but that didn't mean Ira couldn't yell at him. Besides, they all knew about his temper. "Where are we going, anyways? How do we know if the humans are here already?" He absentmindedly brushed some dust off his antlers. He could've sworn that cobwebs were forming on them.

((Night, SamLaur!))

David nodded. "Same. I actually have Asperger's...and a whole load of other things too..." Like PTSD, he thought. But wait, Lucine? As in, the missing girl? No...it coulden't be, could it? Even so, he coulden't just say something like that out loud. "Well, yeah. My eyes. At first, I thought all the red was blood-pooling or something, even though I know it coulden't be something like that. Wait. You do see a red sky and a black moon too, right?" He asked to double-check. "And... Well as much as the thought of more introductions is unappealing, I doubt a pair of introverted teenagers are going to survive for very long in a dyed-red world all alone. Perhaps we should keep walking, we might run into someone else trapped her. And if not... Panic then."

And he saw it. Hitting him like a runaway freight train... He saw the girl before him crushed by falling masonry.

His eyes snapped open - she was fine. What the hell was that about? He then heard the crunch that heralded the brickwork. "No! Look out!!" David yelled, lunging at the girl and knocking her out of the way. He heard a deafening crash, before lifting his head up, and noticing that the rubble certainly would have killed her. How did I know...?. He then remembered that he was on the floor. With a timid girl. And that due to dislodged clothing, his bandages, and perhaps his eyepatch, were visible. Great. "Ah! Sorry!"

------------------------------------------

Deep inside David's soul, something stirred. It was still asleep, for now, but it was certainly waking up. As if David didn't have enough to worry about, between a red sky, a black moon, Wraith Knights, timid girls on TV, or the fact that he's the only male human character in the whole RP, he'd soon have to also deal with...the Dragon Phantasm.

-----------------------------------

"Ira. Cranky as always." Superbia deadpanned dryly."

Avaritia pinched the brow of his helmet and sighed. "Acedia. You must be worried about her as well. Very well. You may come with us." He turned his head towards the stag-horned man. "Ira. You must sense them too, do you not? Regardless, seeing as you like destruction, perhaps you could go cause some, you'll find them eventually."

Avaritia flew with the two others up to the floating heart of the temple - of the Inverse Plain. It looked like an asteroid belt with a cursed seal floating in the centre of it. Within the seal was a red crystal with the mist beautiful, doll-like girl you'd ever seen inside it. Only Avaritia knew who she was, as he had sealed the others' memories of her. They only knew her as the girl on the crystal, the girl forever sleeping, and who will not awaken until the crystal is broken; and that that must never, ever happen under any circumstances. They knew why of course. It would cause everything their host's died for to be in vain.

"It's damaged." Avaritia spoke urgently. "Those trespassers must be dealt with swiftly..."

((Well Avaritia is larger and acts a lot older, so if she seems them as a family, he might be like a father figure or something, haha. And god don't I know it. A love triangle was partially responsible for it dying last time.))

Ira shrugged. "Sure, why not?" He dashed outside and immediately saw David. "Hey kid!" He hollered. "Sorry about this, but all trespassers are to be punished with death, or at least severe and fatal injuries!" He made a finger-pistol and shot a few flames at David and Lucine, aiming to kill.
