Author: David Weber

Summary: The conflict between the Solarian League and the Star Empire of Manticore completes its prologue with the attack of Massimo Filareta against Manticore-A.

Rating: 3

Review: While I find the Honor Harrington world fascinating, it seems like the main books in the series are straying further and further from the idea of Honor as the main character. This may be proper, given that her personal trajectory has placed her in situation which makes it hard to truly grow her character in an engaging manner. However, no single character or group of characters has clearly taken her place as the central figure of the series. There is little sense of grounding in a world filled with various figures, some major, others minor, and sweeping political and naval movements. In addition, certain parts of Weber's prose have grown repetitive. The term "in sorrow than in anger" was used frequently enough that its appearance began to grate. However, while the series is no longer engaging me as much as it once did, I will almost certainly pick up the next book, in the hopes that it will return to the heights I once enjoyed.

Book Title: Rojiura no Banka

Author: Sakaki Ichirou

Summary: As the Skid is destroyed, Natalie desperately teleports Pacifica free of the base in order to save her life. However, the teleport goes wrong and Pacifica loses her memory, only to be found by a young man who takes her in. Shannon wanders the capital city, which is engulfed in the flames of a quiet revolution, searching for his sister.

Rating: 4

Review: The threads of the series are inevitably woven towards their conclusion. The theme of this book was "the thing which a warrior fights for", drawn via the points of view of Fuule, Leopold, Shannon, and Christopher. The theme was adequately executed, but I'm still disappointed that the books are so little about Pacifica -- she's almost the perfect example of a damsel in distress, more of an object than an actual character.

A question: I've been checking over the rules more closely, and I believe I've been making a mistake in thinking I had to list books I read before this challenge began, and then again after the challenge started, as re-reads. Do re-reads only refer to books we re-read during this challenge? If so, apologies for my inability to read. :-)
