@Zovesta: Any goal is fine. Most people don't reach 250.

Valerian Hawkesworth, Duke of Farminster, is surprised to learn that he's been betrothed since childhood to the heiress of a sugar plantation in the Caribbean, but nonetheless sets out to claim his bride. But Charlotte Aurora Kimberly has no intention of marrying anyone just yet, and especially not some pompous duke who has never before bothered to contact her. Going over the betrothal contract for herself, she discovers that it merely states that Charlotte Kimberly is to wed Valerian Hawkesworth when she is seventeen... and her socially ambitious stepsister's first name is also Charlotte. But what will happen if the duke learns of the deception?

And, a question... should we put what form of book alongside the page count? I only ask because there can be differences between hardcover or trade paperback and mass-market paperback. Sure, the font size and type is generally smaller in a mass-market, but they still tend to have more pages than the hardcovers or trades.

Rating: 6.5/10

Review: I felt that there was enough history explained in the first two books that made this one largely unnecessary. A couple of the character backstories were really fascinating to read, but the rest of the book didn't hold my interest nearly as much.

Book Title: Foundation

Author: Mercedes Lackey

Summary: Mags, a slave in a gem-mine, had but one goal in life: stay alive. Told he was the child of bandits and Bad Blood by the mine owners, he was starved and overworked along with a ragtag collection of other children. He had no idea what it meant when a white-clad man on a white horse, accompanied by a riderless white horse, appeared at the mine and insisted on taking him away. And then the unpartnered horse spoke in his mind:Mags had the makings of a Herald of Valdemar, and he, Dallen, had Chosen him and was taking him to the capital city of Haven. Now a whole new world opened up before the young man. For the first time in his life, he was warm, properly clothed, and fed well. All he had to do to “pay” for this bliss, was learn whatever lessons he was given at the new Heralds’ Collegium. He even had friends, Amily the daughter of King’s Own Herald Nikolas, Bardic Trainee Lena, and Healer Trainee Bear. But he also discovered that not all was as perfect as it seemed at first. Not only were many Heralds who distrusted the whole idea of a Collegium, preferring the “old way” of one-on-one mentoring, but foreign “diplomats” to the Court seemed far more interested in seeding discord than actually practicing diplomacy.

Book Title: Intrigues

Author: Mercedes Lackey

Summary: Now accustomed to the Collegium, and even a star member of a new sports team, Herald Trainee Mags was very happy with his new life. But he still had some nagging doubts; having been told for over a decade that he was Bad Blood, he sometimes wondered if he truly deserved what he had now. Determined to learn something of his past, Mags received permission to search the Guard Archives from the area near the gem mine in which he was once a slave. What he learned, was that he had indeed been found in a bandits’ hideout… but that his parents had been prisoners of the bandits, foreigners that none of the other prisoners could understand, but dressed richly enough that they were being held in hopes of gaining a ransom. Elated by his find, Mags went off to tell his friends … only to discover himself suddenly treated with suspicion, because the Foreseers had had visions of the King covered in blood, and the only person near him was foreign-born. One even specifically saw Mags with blood on his own hands, and all of them seemed to assume that the vision was of an assassination attempt… leaving poor Mags in the situation of having to prove himself innocent of a crime that hadn’t even happened.

Born three months premature and weighing less than two pounds in 1940, Karen suffered from cerebral palsy. In an age where the accepted wisdom for dealing with such afflictions was that the afflicted had no mentality so the best thing was to leave her in an institution and forget she’d been born, her parents refused to believe it. They found a doctor willing to work with them and learned to work as their daughter’s physical therapists in order to teach her to walk, feed herself, and write. This book shows how the cerebral palsy affected not just Karen, but her entire family as well.
