Book Number: 1

Number Of Pages: 285

Book Title: The Colour Of Magic

Author: Terry Pratchett

Summary: "Twoflower was a tourist, the first ever seen on the Discworld. Tourist, Rincewind decided, meant idiot." Rincewind the wizard meets Twoflower, the Discworld's first tourist. He reluctantly (and somewhat under duress) agrees to be his guide around the great city of Ankh-Morpork. Off they set on an adventure where Twoflower attempts to explain the logistics of 'in-sewer-ance' and 'reflected-sound-of-underground-spirits' (echo-gnomics) to some of the cities less reputable inhabitants - and Rincewind just tries to stay alive.

Rating: 5/5

Review: Pratchett's first discworld novel and possibly one of his best. It's slightly out of line with the style of some of the later books, but still classic comic-fantasy.

(Re-read - I've read it before and I'll most likely read it again tongue.gif)

Book Number: 2

Number Of Pages: 285

Book Title: The Light Fantastic

Author: Terry Pratchett

Summary: Rincewind and Twoflower were last seen falling off the edge of the disc - the Discworld's first ever tourist was about to become the Discworld's first astronaut. This book picks up where The Colour Of Magic left off, and continues to follow their adventures as they rescue a woman from certain death (who's a little less pleased than you might expect), join forces with a mighty hero (who's a little more weathered than you might expect) and once again, try not to die - at least, not permanently.

Rating: 4.5/5

Review: Not quite as brilliant as the first novel, but still a great book.

(Re-read)

Book Number: 3

Number Of Pages: 283

Book Title: Equal Rites

Author: Terry Pratchett

Summary: A wizard on the Discworld is born as the eighth son of an eighth son. And a wizard is predestined to know the time of his own death, and may pass along their staff to a newborn with particular talent. But when the eighth son of an eighth son, gifted a staff, turns out in fact to be a daughter - could the Discworld have a female wizard in the making?

Rating: 4/5

Review: The first discworld to introduce the witches, particularly Granny Weatherwax, this book is pretty iconic and not one to be missed. Again, like the Colour of Magic, it strays slightly from the later formula (perhaps some of Granny Weatherwax's displays of power are uncharacteristic) but is still a great read.

(Re-read)

Book Number: 4

Number Of Pages: 316

Book Title: Mort

Author: Terry Pratchett

Summary: "I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU", said Death, "BUT I COULD MURDER A CURRY."

Death, for reasons of his own, decides to hire an apprentice - Mort. Mort's not quite sure what to make of it, but is determined to do a good job - until, that is, he decides he ought to save a princess - derailing history in the process.

Rating: 4/5

Review: Death - skeletal chap with a scythe - was introduced in the earlier discworld novels, but this is the first of the discworld novel centering on his storyline. Again, it's classic Pratchett and a good read.

(Re-read)

Book Number: 5

Book Title: The Door Into Summer

Author: Robert A. Heinlein

Summary: Genius-inventor Dan Davis is betrayed by his business partner and lover. He decides the present day holds no attraction for him - instead he opts to take the Long Sleep [cryogenic preservation] to wake again 30 years in the future. He finds the world much advanced, with household robots the norm - but bizarrely, some of them seem to have been invented by none other than... himself!

Rating: 3/5

Review: First published in 1960, this sci-fi tells the tale of a man set in the 'future' (1970) who takes the opportunity to travel forward in time via cryogenic sleep to the year 2000 (!). References to vacuum tube memory being an amazing new technology 'barely understood' and casual references to women as homemakers are typical of the times - along with the cliche of 'in the future, there will be robots!' But if you can get past that, it's a classic sci-fi time-travel tale, with a decent, if slightly predicatable, plot.

6. The only books that do not count are textbooks, or books with less than 100 pages. So you can read children books (provided they meet the 100 page mark), young adult, biographies etc. Any genre is accepted. Manga is only accepted if it's 500 pages or more. Online unpublished fiction is allowed if it has 20,000 words or more (please post the link to the story and the number of words, however if the story could be considered unsuitable for minors post the link to either this account or freddyness via PM)

Out of interest, when you say that "The only books that do not count are textbooks", where do you draw the line of 'textbook'? Is it any non-fiction text, or just 'school' textbooks? For example, were I to read The Mythical Man-Month, "a book on software engineering and project management"*, would it count or not?

*(not exactly the most riveting theme, I know, but it's considered a fairly seminal work about software engineering)
