Nobility for a Thief

Diego popped his head in, "Dinner is ready! Come on in!" The table was set up with a wide variety of food, from meats, fruits, veggies, and wine. Diego's wife sat next to him as well as their two children.

Rob..... was the first at the table per usual. Matt the second one. They left enough room for the girls to sit by the children and Xel to be by Diego.

 

Neiva sat tentatively on her chair. She waited for the hosts to dish out before going for the lighter foods. Fruit and vegetables, some ham and Turkey. She stuck with the water, and once again didn't touch the wine.

Diego and his wife passed out food to all the guests. Xel mostly went for meat, while Solessa balanced herself well. Regardless, they both had a large glass of wine. The meat was tender and moist, the fruits and vegetables were fresh, and the wine was almost perfect.

Rob and Matt both loaded on the meat and had the wine as well.

 

Neiva took a sip of water after swallowing a chunk of meat. "My compliments to the cook."

((Sure, but to be honest, I've been having a terrible brain fart on what to do here...))

((Skip to more travels? Had a plan for when Neiva proves herself and finally gets to wear that gown... it would be to the east about four weeks later after this, near the mountains. They can be closer too. She's more confident and comfortable around them))

Four weeks later....

 

Neiva had come back to camp with Rob with a basket of potatoes and vegetables for rabbit stew tonight, using the rabbits caught in Matt's traps. They were back in the woods, further from her home town. The place they were stationed at had few travelers, most who are rich, with a few who where simple country folk pulling carts of corn or other produce for the market.

 

Most of the veggies in the basket where stolen from the wealthy farms owned by merchants. Only a few spices she actually paid for. Neiva had on a cloth on her head, keeping her hair back and out of the sun, the wrappings back on her arms (although mostly for show) and Solessa had started teaching her how to use a dagger.

 

She no longer walked hunched and frightened, but stretched to her full height with a defence in her eyes, challenging anyone to cross her and get a tongue lashing. Her skits had a few patches, and she was given a set of clothing she fitted for herself that looked like Solessa's normal clothing (pants instead of skirts) although she didn't wear them as often, preferring to stay with skirts and blouses feeling more comfortable in them.

 

 

After she sent Matt to peel the carrots and potatoes for a crude comment about women, she cleaned and skinned the rabbits, preparing the stew and set the hides to dry as Rob joined the others for a heist. She waited for Xel to come back to tell him the news and her plan, which she plotted as she prepared this evening's meal.

Xel had returned with a large log over his arm, which he dropped with others as he planned to make a cart to allow them to carry more with them. He moved to their camp center and sat down, "I hope everyone had a productive day, we made good ground guys."

"Indeed, and even more when I tell you my plan..." Neiva said as she cut spuds into the stew. She told him about an open invitation ball from a noble who was much like her parents. Being a noble herself, she knew what wouldn't be missed and a distraction. "Its in three days, and my old cook's niece works there as a servant. She's mute but is an amazing drawer, but she can't spell. I didn't tell her what we were going to do, but she gave me a map of empty rooms and the ones that would hold the party. Now, she thinks two of you would have jobs there for that night. Xel, you and I would draw attention to ourselves and the best thing.... it's a masked ball...." she said as she handed him the paper. "Carts and carriages would be there, finish this one and we have a place to hide the stuff. I'd let you know what to take. Everything is expensive in a nobles home, but not everything would be missed, much like me." She explained. Waiting for his ok to continue with the plan.

Xel looked at the girl with a smirk, "Well well... Are we the thief of the day... What will the other three be doing?"

"Rob will be here with the cart, ready to pull around quickly when you whistle. " She pointed to a loop in the driveway, it went back to the stables and loops around an island beside the house to pull to the front. The space is by a window and two large hedges. "The window is propped open nearly always for the cigar smoke to clear out. Solessa and Matt would do the sterling in four of the rooms by the window, handing items to rob. They'll get in disguised as a temporary maid and errand boy. Among all the new faces highered for the night, they wouldn't recognise two new ones. Xel, you would be a local escort to a German Nobel on a temporary visit to see the sight." She smiled. "Zat vold be me." She said in a very strong German accent. ((I wouldn't do that, it was only for a moment)) She switched to her normal speech. "I am a good actress and often mimicked my German nurse maid. I speak it fluently, so if anyone else knows it, it wouldn't be an issue. What do you think Xel. Should we continue with the plan?"

Xel smiled, "I'm game for this." Solessa huffed, "I'm not, there is no way in hell your getting me in a maid outfit... That's not my style... I would rather pull the cart by myself."

[AroaraAngelwolf]

"You don't, they are to have on their best dresses for this. No uniform. Wear the blue one you have, it will look nice. The maids and errand boys don't have masks, that's how they tell the difference between servants and guests. " Matt grumbled about being called a boy. "How much would we score on this?" Neiva smiled. "One China cup and saucer combo in a home as this one will run to two hundred gold underground, two forty if you sell it to the right person legally. These cups are the ones that wouldn't be missed and easily replaced. " She paused, waiting for the question about how to tell the unnoticed from the noticed.

Xel didn't care about those details, "So... We go in this "ball" and steal some fine China. Simple enough for me. When is this thing happening again?"

"In three days, but it doesn't have to be just China. A pillow made of silk on a unused fainting couch in the men's office, that buffalo horn behind the elephant tusk. Look carefully, the things you spot first, don't take. They are precisely arranged to be conversation starters, to ease into a deal on goods. The items we want are ones that have dust on them, don't look as polished, or are out of the way for they are invaluable, unimportant for interesting conversation. These pieces are easily replaced and wouldn't be reported. If you take the elephant tusk, well, that's a full blown man hunt and your head is in the gallows. Some nobles like rare prizes, so they have eyes and ears in the underground. If a big item is taken, I now know that some less savory characters who don't follow the code will turn rat if enough gold passes through their fingers. " She said adding parsley and rosemary along with pepper. "It's almost done."

Xel smiled, "Solessa was right about keeping you, your knowledge of the upper class is much better than mine, since I'm only really good with military class, not as much nobles. Good work."

Neiva smiled brightly and spooned out the food into bowls and passed out dinner. "Thank you. You did so much for me already, it's only fair that I give a little back. Careful it's hot. " She warned to rob who looks like he wants to slurp the whole thing down.

Xel and Solessa carefully took their shares and blew on it to cool it down. They then enjoyed their meal by the fire.

Matt did the same, Rob however seemed immune to the hot stew and slurps it down and had seconds before Xel even took a bite. Hers had to be nearly Luke warm for her to eat, being so sensitive. She hated it, but dealt with it.

 

She was the last to finish the meal and Rob scraped the pot clean before she washed it in a nearby stream.
