Katniss volunteers in the place of her younger sister, Prim, who wouldn't last a day in the arena. Rating: ✮✮✮ Review: This book could have been way, way better. A lot of Collins' stylistic choices really surprised me (i.e., writing in first person, present tense) and the pacing definitely threw me off. Every time I got settled into a scene or setting, I was whisked off to the next scene without any time to breathe. I didn't have time to get a feel for any of the characters, even Katniss, who was supposed to have been the main focus of the story, but even she was drowned out by the heavy Exposition Fairy in the beginning. And the obvious Sequel Hook at the end just irritated me. It gave the whole book a non-resolution and was...kind of a cheap way to introduce the next book.
