Question marks in descriptions.

Recommended Posts

I'd like to suggest that question marks be allowed in describing.

I've heard the argument that they're most often used in second/first person and that they are blocked because they're also used frequently in coding.

I don't know about the coding, but I don't think not allowing them is going to prevent second/first person. In fact, we know that already (Just ask any person that's spent more than 5 minutes reviewing descriptions).

Besides the fact that most people who don't bother to read the rules for describing likely won't read through it again and notice something small like a missing question mark (they aren't blocked when you are writing, but disappear after submission), but also there are those of us who like to ask rhetorical questions and the like.

For instance, a sentence like the following would generally be considered third person, even if it does contain a question mark.

"...Jacena often wonders at the cruel injustice of it all, but what does she know?"

This lack of a question mark in describing has been bothering me since I started describing (I ask too many questions like the above).

You learn to work around it, but it still would be fantastic if we were finally able to use our beloved question mark in our dragons' descriptions. <3

Thanks for reading,

~Pink

So do I. It'd be better to have questions in some descriptions, but maybe not every single one. So the forum topics aren't overrun by a million questions.

...But the descriptions are to describe a dragon, not to ask questions. :| If they have questions, they should come to the forums to ask them because they have a better chance of getting thorough answers.

I do support this idea, it would be nice. I can think of a few instances where they could have been helpful for adding a bit of humor to my descriptions with some questions.

The forward slash would be useful too. I know it's used in HTML and the like, but I really would have liked to mention the "Clementine/Deirwater conflict". "Clementine-Deirwater" just sounds like one of those posh surnames. tongue.gif

But ranting aside, I do agree with the whole question mark thing. And surely if someone tries to code their description then it'll be flagged up during the reviewing phase. Isn't that partly why descriptions have to be approved before they are displayed?

That's just my opinion on the matter, though. I'm sure there's probably some over-arching reason that means for safety's sake we can't do eveything we'd like.

And I always think it's better to be safe than sorry. smile.gif

Support. I've wanted to use question marks on several occasions but couldn't because of the filter. The first time I thought it was an error so I added "(can one of you mods add a question mark here for me? Thanks!)" in my description. Fail. XD

So much support. I've written a lot of descriptions where I wish I could use question marks, since they really cut down the amount of words I need. I can't think of an easier way to ask questions without using ten extra characters.

Support D8 Lookit what happened to poor Delish. Even though I don't use question marks all that often, it would still be nice to have for an odd occasion or description.

Aww! That is cute! And would totally work better with question marks- please add them!

support.

not only is there rhetorical questions but short quotes that are in first person sometimes contain questions.

i know my Dragon Knight Arrow was going to have a short quote that had a question but i changed it due to lack of question mark

I totally support this idea. There are so many great descriptions that can't exist, simply because there are no question marks.

Support, too. They are often useful in contexts which have nothing to do with the first person.

Barring questions and slashes seems to be a thoroughly efficient means to bar hyperlinks, so I'd rather they remain barred than have the site bogged down with less efficient means to catch links posted in descriptions.

How do question marks in a forum enable hyperlinks ?? (did I just enable one ?? xd.png)

And to add a very stupid question, why would anyone add hyperlinks to a description, and what would they do that was harmful?

Even though code is not allowed now, I see quite a bit of it. Most of it's eggspam, but I also get long strings of stuff I have no idea what it is for.
