Yes, it's very slow-paced and often more a very detailed character introspection, rather than an adventure fantasy, but I still adore the author's skill to write a series this unbelievably well-planned, where every little detail is important to come to the conclusion the story reaches. It was good, yes but some stuff did not get resolved, like whether or not there is a Dead Woods, and what is going on with all the kids with the freckles. Stackpole Rating: 5/5 Review: I was somewhat lukewarm on the first book in this series -- I found it very interesting but somewhat difficult to connect to the characters because there were so many interwoven plotlines. This book? Couldn't put it down. Everything from the three siblings (Jorim, who turns out is actually a reincarnated god, Keles, who's been kidnapped by an enemy nation, and Nirati, who was murdered last book but that doesn't seem to have stopped her much) to the mysterious swordsman who can't remember his past, to his apprentice's quest (along with an inventor of freakin' magical robots) to find the foretold Sleeping Empress who can save them all, to the little boy who is terrified that he is the god of death's avatar, to the political intrigue, everything's just spun together really well and made one very compelling story. Also, twisty ending is twisty! *To whoever doublechecks page counts: Amazon.com says it's only 428, but I just checked my copy and it's definitely 558. Share this post Link to post
