Posted February 27 (edited) Welcome to the Photography Contest! Welcome back for another round of the DC Photography contest, come and show us what you've got! This time, the theme is: A Riddle I've attached something that would qualify - unless you're German, and of a certain age, you won't know what that thing is. Feel free to guess! Please don't send pictures of He Who Must Not Be Named. Submission deadline: Saturday 16 March at 12 noon EST Voting deadline: Saturday, 23 March at 12 noon EST Submissions: Rules: - One entry per person. - A photograph is defined as an image made using a camera or phone camera. - Screenshots are not allowed. - Picture has to be made by yourself and can't be just a reproduction of someone's work. If someone else's work is in the picture, there needs to be something extra. - No manipulation besides basic photo adjustments (contrast, exposure, cropping, color balance, lighting, etc.). - No text or framing in the photo. This will ensure fairness. - You are free to submit an old photo; you don't need to take a new one just for this competition. - Winner hosts the next contest. - Hosts may re-use previous themes that have not been used in the last 10 contests. Posted February 27 (edited) ooh - I may have something.... but WHERE.... ETA damn; not the right BIT in my photos. But maybe one from France.... Edited February 27 by Fuzzbucket Share this post Link to post
Posted March 2 If I read context correctly, should I post one of these? It was at right downstairs. Spoiler Share this post Link to post
Posted March 3 (edited) A genuine riddle! So . . . riddle me this . . . is the aim to post pictures of some sort of vending machine/post trays,/pigeon holes/advent calendars/lockers etc? Or is it simply intended to be a subject where others won't know what the item is and have to try to guess? Colour me puzzled Edited March 3 by LadyMadonna Share this post Link to post
Posted March 7 (edited) I am German - yet I have no clue what this is. I’m intrigued! 🧐😄 Spoiler I originally took this picture because I thought the colours were pretty but it hopefully fits the theme - I drew and then cut out dozens of these and I promise it makes sense in the end. Does anyone know what these are for? 😁 Edited March 7 by blah Share this post Link to post
Posted March 7 I think they are the cutouts you can use to weave decorations - like those Danish hearts https://cloudberryliving.co.uk/blogs/blog/how-to-make-danish-woven-paper-hearts Spoiler (this is not my entry; I am still thinking.) Share this post Link to post

I don’t know if I’m giddy you figured it out so quickly or sad because it wasn’t more difficult. 😂 Share this post Link to post
Posted March 7 (edited) Don't be sad. When my daughter was au-pairing in Denmark, she made several and brought them home. We spent WEEKS trying to work out how she put them together, while she laughed at us and wouldn't tell. So all that stuck in my mind,. I bet nobody else picked up on it. I THINK what I want to photograph will be in front of me on the weekend... (MUST take camera....) Edited March 14 by Fuzzbucket Share this post Link to post

Posted March 14 No, but I did take one. I hope it qualifies; it was the most puzzley I could find at the time; I showed it to someone who said - well, that it was something it is NOT so it must be a bit of a puzzle ! "Seen in a museum" Spoiler Share this post Link to post
Posted March 15 (edited) They remind me of pick-up-sticks, Fuzz. Kind of ornate ones, if that is what they are. We used to have very simple ones wooden ones with a magnet in the centres. This probably isn't all that much of a riddle, but it caught my eye when I first saw it. Spoiler What am I? Edited March 15 by LadyMadonna Share this post Link to post

The person I showed them to thought cocktail sticks. 14 minutes ago, LadyMadonna said: This probably isn't all that much of a riddle, but it caught my eye when I first saw it. Um - a flower ? They look a bit like something you might poke into your hair, too. But could probably be used as cocktail sticks, as well. No, not a flower. Share this post Link to post
Posted March 15 It looks a bit like an exotic chestnut. It's very pretty. Share this post Link to post
Posted March 16 I borrowed some gear from my husband's hobby... (which is one part hobby and one part collecting hobby-related gear. But what hobby isn't like that? ) Anyway I've always wanted to try flat lay photography and this was a good excuse for it! Spoiler I also thought Fuzz's picture was cocktail sticks, but I wasn't sure why they'd be in a museum. Share this post Link to post

Posted March 16 I got the pick up sticks because they reminded me of chess pieces but I don’t know what LadyMadonnas is. I was thinking Magnolia but that can’t be it if it’s not a flower. 🧐 20 minutes ago, GhostMouse said: Anyway I've always wanted to try flat lay photography and this was a good excuse for it! That is such a cool picture, love the red theme and the arrangement. How did you avoid shadows? Especially of your hand and camera? Also the cat design and the dog paw threw me off but I think I know what this is. ⭐️🌕🪐 Share this post Link to post

Also the cat design and the dog paw threw me off but I think I know what this is. ⭐️🌕🪐 Thank you! And I think you've got it. The cat designs are just this company's branding. I set everything up on the floor (on a sheet of poster board), aimed my ring light straight down, and shot through the ring from above. I also intentionally overexposed it to minimize shadows from the objects themselves. I think I could have achieved something similar with flash, but for this the ring light was bright enough and did just what I had in mind. Share this post Link to post

Posted March 16 (edited) @GhostMouse, I am stumped... and intrigued! At first, I was thinking along the lines of space photography, but my brother takes decent (although not professional) pictures of stars, and his equipment looks nothing like that. Also, I don't see why you'd need so many ports. And all these tiny screws suggest that it needs to be fixated, so maybe it's bumped around a fair bit? Honestly, no idea. Ah, just realized that blah is also thinking of stars... 😄 Edited March 16 by Fly-by-Night Share this post Link to post
