Welcome to the Photography Contest!

Welcome back for another round of the DC Photography contest, come and show us what you've got!

This time, the theme is:

Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is a compositional technique where points of interest in a photo are placed along (imaginary) lines that divide the photo into thirds.

Here's a nice infographic.

And here's a short article with examples.

As always, you don't have to take a new picture for this contest! While it can be helpful to keep the rule of thirds in mind while shooting, you can also use the rule of thirds while cropping an existing photo. Both Photoshop and the default photo editor on my phone will show a 3x3 grid while using the crop function. And if you do want to take a new picture, many (most? all?) cameras can be set to display a 3x3 grid while shooting (even my phone has it as an option, you just have to get down in the settings a little).

Submission deadline: January 21st

Voting deadline:  January 28th

Submissions:

sh20000sh's Cloud Pic

Fuzzbucket's Pheasant on Roof

LadyMadonna's Blue Tit in Mistletoe

Rules:

- One entry per person.

- A photograph is defined as an image made using a camera or phone camera.

- Screenshots are not allowed.

- Picture has to be made by yourself and can't be just a reproduction of someone's work. If someone else's work is in the picture, there needs to be something extra.

- No manipulation besides basic photo adjustments (contrast, exposure, cropping, color balance, lighting, etc.).

- No text or framing in the photo. A signature/watermark is just fine, but it's preferable if you don't have "O Hai Eye Hav3 T3XT" (or something similar) present in the photo.

- When voting, please don't select your own image. This will ensure fairness.

- You are free to submit an old photo; you don't need to take a new one just for this competition.

- Winner hosts the next contest.

- Hosts may re-use previous themes that have not been used in the last 10 contests.

Ping list of people who have competed in the past, which should help them see when there's a new thread if they want to join in: please ask if you want your name added or removed:

Bumping this for anyone who wants to get a picture in before the deadline. Any subject goes, just adjust your shot with a little cropping/ leveling. I promise you can do it! :D

Sounds interesting.  Will check out my photos to see if I have something appropriate.

EDIT: Here we go - Blue Tit in one of the clumps of Mistletoe growing on our Apple tree, taken August 2021.  Top left intersection crosses his eye.  Not sure how to put the photo in as hidden . . . ?

Click on it so it's highlighted,  and then hit the spoiler button But it's not a rule; you don't hafta !

Fuzz is right, it's not a rule, so no need to worry about it!

Are you posting from mobile? The options on mobile are extremely limited and lack a lot of the most useful editing options. No strikethrough, no spoiler tags, no code tags, etc. I would have sworn you used to be able to use spoiler tags there at one point, though.

If you're on a computer, you can highlight the picture and hit the spoiler button (looks like an eye), like Fuzz said. You can also upload your picture, hit the spoiler button, put your cursor in the spoiler box, and hit the "insert" button (very small text on the bottom right of your image, and it only appears when you hover over it - it took me ages to discover this!). That will put it into a spoiler box before you post.

Edit: The spoiler option I tested doesn't work, so nevermind.

Oh, wow!  Thanks, everyone.

Now I have to work out how to host the next one . . . ?

Copy the main post above and start a new topic. Paste it in the post and then change the theme (include a description if you want) and the dates for the deadlines (a guideline we've been trying out recently is about 2 weeks to submit an entry and about 1 week for voting, but it's your decision as host). Feel free to change up the colors, too, just keep the rest of the text intact. Make sure to update the contest number in the title. That's it!

Then after the submission deadline, edit the post and add in a poll. Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks, @GhostMouse.  New contest set up.  I've given slightly longer for submissions in the hope that we might attract a few more entries.  Do the tags to individuals work automatically from within the post?

They do! It's very convenient when setting up a new contest.
