Welcome to the Photography Contest!

Welcome back for another round of the DC Photography contest, come and show us what you've got!

This time, the theme is:

A souvenir

Anything you've brought home with you from a holiday or a business trip: your classic seashell, an ashtray or a weird T-shirt! I'm sure you've got something.

Submission deadline: December 22nd (before everyone is too busy under the Christmas tree 😉

Voting deadline:  January 4th

Submissions:

Rules:

- One entry per person.

- A photograph is defined as an image made using a camera or phone camera.

- Screenshots are not allowed.

- Picture has to be made by yourself and can't be just a reproduction of someone's work. If someone else's work is in the picture, there needs to be something extra.

- No manipulation besides basic photo adjustments (contrast, exposure, cropping, color balance, lighting, etc.).

- No text or framing in the photo. A signature/watermark is just fine, but it's preferable if you don't have "O Hai Eye Hav3 T3XT" (or something similar) present in the photo.

- When voting, please don't select your own image. This will ensure fairness.

- You are free to submit an old photo; you don't need to take a new one just for this competition.

- Winner hosts the next contest.

- Hosts may re-use previous themes that have not been used in the last 10 contests.

Ping list of people who have competed in the past, which should help them see when there's a new thread if they want to join in: please ask if you want your name added or removed:

Once again I have a story for this. I present to you: Bigtop (left) and Needles (right). Bigtop was purchased as a circus souvenir at some point when I was a child; I just remember being excited to get a dragon and having a sensory overload. Needles was given to me by a nurse at a children's hospital when I was going through treatment and testing to try and diagnose my joint issues. It was my first time taking blood and she promised me a stuffed animal if I made it through the blood testing, and I was extremely excited to choose a dragon since I had begun my collection already and had passed out during the test. I reasoned that if I had a dragon named Needles and dragons were my favorite thing I couldn't be scared of needles. They're still one of my favorites.

That's an awesome story, @Edenello, and your dragons are really cute.

Mine has a story, too. In 1980, my mother was working on a film in Spain and once school was out for summer, I joined her over there. One day off, we drove up into the mountains behind Málaga to a little town called Casares where I tried to make friends with a goat in a field. Goat was not interested and tried to butt me off the mountain. The shops had these cute glass aminal families, so I bought the goat one to remind me of that trip. The little one on its own at the left was my good luck charm for exam time for the remainder of my high school years (he's lost a leg). The rock is from the same town. The sheep's from New Zealand (brought by my mom after another film) and the L from South Africa (another friend brought that).

In fact, the entire printer's drawer is full of what could be considered souvenirs. XD

OK - here is the lovely new one. It's tall and narrow. And actually now that I got them ALL out - @Fly-by-Night - is it too late to switch out my entry ? No biggie, but....

So, do you want the Trier one to be your entry, or do cou have a photograph with your entire collection?

Yes, it was Trier we were just in. A lovely place; we enjoyed it very much. On reflection I like my first pic better now that I think about it, with the tree. But here are ALL Fuzz's Mugz.: Collected over many years of going to markets. We have, of course, two of each actually. This is NOT my entry.

This is Elizabeth Drexel and her dog Hippodale, styled after the portrait in that link.

In December 2019 my parents came to visit me and we took a trip to see some of the historic mansions in Newport, RI. One of the mansions we toured was the Elms, where that portrait of Elizabeth is on display, along with a portrait of Hippodale, and a small chair that was custom made for him (you can see both of those here - I have my own pictures of them but don't want to insert too many in one comment!) Naturally, I fell in love with all of these, so when my parents spotted this ornament in the gift shop, they managed to buy it secretly and gift it to me later.

The poll is now open! (I typed "pool" first, maybe because it's raining cats and dogs here, and we've had floods in the Northern regions of Germany)

Thank you so much for sharing not just your wonderful photographs, but also the stories behind them.

Lord yes - we went through the other day on a train and were amazed at the flooding in the fields and a couple of roads. Stay safe - Happy Christmas.

Oh wow, thanks everyone! I thought for sure we were about to have a tiebreaker poll. I'll get a new topic up as soon as I think of something good. Thanks for hosting, @Fly-by-Night!
