If it all seems to have gone, run a full virus scan with whatever you have (AVG ?) Just to be SURE SURE SURE !

Already did that yesterday and everything is still as it was when I removed Yontoo and cleared the cache and cookies.

Use to get viruses like crazy when I used Firefox. I switched to Google Chrome and installed McAfee Internet Security and haven't had any since.

Usually takes a full reformat/reinstall of Windows once every couple months to get rid of the viruses I somehow had managed to get. Glad that I got the programs that I have now.. haven't had to do that in awhile and McAfee tells me every time it blocks the ad viruses. All the blocks are from ads displayed with the AdChoices banners which is what the cave and forums have. :S

Did you have a anti-virus with FF? Cuz I use Ad Block Plus and Norton 360 and get no issues period. I use to get virus' from ads when my Ad Block Plus wasn't working right. (didn't have subscriptions (EasyList and Fanboys List) so adobe and java script ones would still show now they don't)

 

Chrome is getting a version of Ad Block Plus but it is still in the beta version so I would wait until it came out.

Sorry, horrible anti-virus. I don't know a single techie type around that would recommend it, seriously. Go with Kaspersky or ESET.

I don't want to promote too much worry, but I do have to say that running a full scan shouldn't necessarily make someone feel overwhelmingly sure that their computer is safe. Even removed infections can leave problems behind. I totally agree with running the full scan, but it's not a bad idea to keep an eye out for symptoms that might signify a problem for a while.

 

Again, not to scare anyone, and most people's computer works fine without going to the lengths of something like a disk wipe and a reinstall, but it's a good idea to be aware that anti-virus programs don't always find or fix all problems.

I second that. The only times I've done something with Norton are those on which I've removed it. It is more effective at making the computer slow than doing its intended job.

All the problems with norton seem to be relating to computer speed. I find it to be very reliable for anti-virus ability, and (I have a snail of a laptop anyway, that may contribute) I didn't notice any performance issues.

 

Maybe its reputation is like that of IE- people hated it for being slow, and even now it's better, it is more infamous for being slow than getting viruses. I still don't use it though.

No, it has been getting worse not better. It really is a rescource hog these days. Probably one of the reasons your laptop is a snail.

Now, see, I do use IE. And I have never had any problems with viruses. Good browsing habits, and a good bit of anti-virus. IE isn't an issue if you know what your doing.

 

OTOH if you know what you're doing then Norton is an issue I don't know a single techie who would use it, or even recommend it.

Well I'll disagree. I know it doesn't block EVERYTHING and I don't expect it too. What I expect it to do is if it does let something through to remove it and it does. I don't have any issues with my computer at all. It starts up fast, runs fine, no lag and it's never slow. I don't click one very link and I only use FF for Ad Block Plus and go to sites I can trust. I check them out before I go to the link so I'm not walking into some virus infested site. No one is going to change my mind on this unless I see it. My whole house uses it and not one of us have had any of the issues that you guys have said happen.

 

I have heard good things about Kaspersky so if I ever have to switch from Nortons or any of us I have already told my parents about Kaspersky so it's probably the one we are going to use. If thats the case I would be getting Maleware Bytes along with it.

You pretty much can't find a tech professional that would recommend Norton. That's quite damning. Kaspersky is good, though, as is ESET.

I was very close with tech pros @forum dealing with viruses and at least 90% of them would and did recommend Norton products. Those guys I am talking about also work for/or with various AV soft companies.

 

I use Norton myself after trying few different AVs and I have never had any virus problem. I can also use diagnostic tools to check if my AV soft is doing good job or not.

I got microsoft security essentials running for virusses......

when I suspect a trojan or something I download another program of which at the moment I cannot recall the name and I dare say I will remember when I post this....

anyhow...

I've seen multiple viruses, trojans and stuff pass but up till now they never won...

the only thing I cannot fix is my HDD from my old laptop... which I knocked out </3

 

interesting tip:

do NOT hit your laptop.... HDD's will not like it </3

 

also norton is one of the anti-virus programs who update LAST.....

If I thought for a bit, I could probably even dig up a few things from the bottom of my brain which I know Norton is absolutely useless against. Have had to do the fixing after things have gotten through and set up a camp in the system...

That stinks, and I'm sorry to hear that you had to reset everything. I hate most 'you must pay' products to do with anti-virus software, because they're shiny and flashy and don't do zilch.
