I get viruses on a daily basis. Small ones, though. They don't do anything as long as I catch them.

 

Now, I have had my fair share of hard drive crashes and computer failures, but thanks to my tech-smart dad, none of them were too bad. Well, unless you count the time my hard drive crashed and I lost everything. X_X

 

Also, I often wonder, why on Earth do people even make viruses?

For fun, showing off their programming skills, stuff like that. I'm afraid of what you're doing that get you infected that frequently though - good web habits can cut down on more than half of virus infections, noscript, ABP, and a good antivirus can cut down on the rest.

Viruses lol. There fun to remove at times. If you monitor your processes in task maneger thats one key way to rid em. Simple to. If they hide from task maneger then I use Hyjackthis and rid anything I don't know of. ((yes yes crude but effective)) I use malewere bytes from time to time and have AVG running as well. But to be 100% safe from buggers you need to know your way around a computer (more then just capable of searching through files though that is needed to) I find those fake anti virus scans real funny.

 

It fakes a scan. But it says I have a D drive........ LOL I got no D drive on this computer. And if you know what you store on your computer (which you should) those fake scans often will have random file names for its 'scan' and well ya.

 

All in all there easy to fight off.

That's the funny thing - most virii work by taking advantage of user ignorance.

Well yeah there are easy ways to do that using... pretty much every language known to man. I'm considering writing a small one in assembly that runs on startup that just shuts it down.

I can do it with Window's standard program. Or not.

 

I usually make a new shorcut and add a CMD command to it, usually the shutdown command. It only uses the CMD prompt and nothing more.

 

I'll make one and make it downloadable for you I'll also add the counter.

As I said, every language known to man. I made a program like that once to prank my dad - he didn't find it so amusing.

 

EDIT: You don't even need to use a batch file, you can just use the command instead of the file path, if I recall correctly.

Most of the time, to steal your information. That's the number 1 goal of most viruses: Either forcibly steal your credit card number/passwords to bank account/etc (keyloggers, spyware, worms((?))), or trick you into giving up your number (rogues). I can't think of anything other than rogue antiviruses that do the latter. Most viruses don't try to trick you; they just steal it.

 

I'm not sure about trojans and backdoors and 'normal' malware. They can still do the above. Maybe it's just because they want to do something illegal for no reason whatsoever. Maybe because they know it irritates you.

 

Sometimes, though, people release mostly non-harmful viruses just to be funny. Like a 'virus' that pops up a screamer every ten minutes. It scares you to death, but it doesn't steal your info or anything.

Backdoors are usually to allow easier access for more serious/complex/hard to deliver virii, especially ones that turn your computer into part of a botnet.

I don't personally despise people who make...prankware or whatever it was called. I mean, they aren't doing anything completely malicious. Although the screamer thing might be a bit overboard, because you could give an elderly person a heart attack. Perhaps something like a LOLcat that's NOT a screamer that comes up every few minutes.

Well my AV setup looks like this: free Avira for constant protection, with monthly full scans run with Malwarebytes. That with the browser setup I mentioned earlier (Firefox + NoScript + Adblock Plus) results in me being almost totally virus free.

I barely even know which ones I have, LOL. I think I have Microsoft Security Essentials...? O.o Anyway, I don't think I've ever encountered a virus, so it must be doing some good.

I never get viruses on my computer. I use no-sript antivirus software now, macafee sucks. Also, Iusually use my gaming console when watching porn/ playing porn games. Never get viruses and no one can track my cookies/visited history.

When I got my first laptop it was a hand-me-down from my uncle. He had never even heard of an antivirus program (if he had, I wouldn't have guessed) and so when I got the laptop and installed Avast! Antivirus for the first time, every few seconds consistently for almost two hours it found viruses, worms, malware, trojans, rootkits, you name it. I finally decided even Avast couldn't possibly have cured EVERYTHING on the hard drive, so I wiped it out and installed a fresh version of Win. XP. It was a fun day.

I actually don't do much on my computer. I only visit YouTube, DCF, Tinypic and Steam. XP

The most I net on a daily basis would be tracking cookies and the stray Trojan. Nothing too harmful.

Also, as for antivirus software, I use the standard Mcaffe, or however it's spelled, and Superantispyware.

McAfee is awful. Get Microsoft Security Essentials or Norton. Even the ROGUES are better than McAfee...

I would strongly recommend neither of them. Norton will slow down the computer, but do very little in the sense of actually protecting the computer, and MS Security is fairly low-function. (I've discovered plenty of viruses from computers with either.)

 

Generally, a good firewall is more essential than an antivirus. If the first functions properly and you don't make any inadvisable downloads / permit everything to enter your computer yourself, you practically don't need the latter.

MSE detect 98% of viruses. All they don't detect is trojans. So I guess you downloaded something.

The computers I was speaking of were not my own; I was simply asked to remove whatever had intruded.

 

I only use MS Windows for computer-gaming - MS Windows XP Proffessional is the tertiary OS on my second PC. (This one currently has ZA and Avira - a single thing has yet to get through.)

Otherwise I use other OSs.

We'd never use either of those. Infact windows security is one of the first things we turn *off* when building a new PC. It tends to interfere with any anti-virus you do put on your PC so they don't work properly. And Norton is a horrible rescource hog.

 

We'd recommend either ESET or Kaspersky. Those are the ones in most frequent use among all the other techies I know.

It sounds like you have a problem with either Text Enhance spyware or something similar to it. Do you know how to check what extensions or plug-ins your browsers are running? If not, which browsers are you using?

 

Also, if you're using Windows, can you check your programs for Text Enhance or any other strange looking programs?

 

Go to Start. Then go to your Control Panel. Select Add/Remove Programs or Programs/Features, depending on which version you're using, then check your list of programs.

 

Also, if it is a problem with Text Enhance, whatever you do don't use the opt out option on their site.
