Images and Links and Signatures (oh my!)

Recommended Posts

I originally made this post in site discussion but I'm going to post it over here because this is where it belongs.
Hello!
Long story sort:
I lost access to a computer (I just had a phone) sometime in 2018 and stopped visiting the forums. But the whole format of the forums was updated while I was gone (I know it was a long time ago) and now I have no idea how to code for posts/signatures!

I really just wanna know how to link things with images in posts. Especially in my signature.
It used to be like ...

[URL= link ][IMG= image link ][/URL]

... but now I have no idea how to do this and google has not been able to teach me.

I'm pretty sure that these days you have to insert images using the Other Media button (which, yes, is extremely unclear) and then select the image to insert a link? Don't quote me on that, I'm pretty sure my image links are all legacy... but that feels like it should be how it works.

e: Just tested to confirm and yep, that's how it works.

For a quick update, images will auto-post themselves as long as they have "https://" in the address and end with an image extension (e.g. .jpeg, .png, .gif, etc.)

The image tag ( [ img ]url[ /img ]) still works, but it's often not necessary.

You can also insert images by uploading the image to Dragon Cave in the reply box or clicking the "Other Media" button, which allows you to post things you already uploaded or straight from a url.

Ex:

https://i.postimg.cc/SKHgwxzZ/2836uv.gif

[img=https://i.postimg.cc/SKHgwxzZ/2836uv.gif]

https://i.postimg.cc/SKHgwxzZ/2836uv.gif

2836uv.gif

To connect links, you can just post the link address into the reply box, and it will do it for you. Or you can click the chain links (🔗) at the top of the reply box.

Note, if you don't want the link or image to auto-post, you have to right click the reply box and click "Paste as plain text." It may still auto-post though, but at the bottom of the reply box, a black bar usually pops up that lets you post as plain text (or as a link if you posted an image) instead.

Forum links will also auto-embed, which is real nice because it gives a preview of the thread you are posting. You can use the above mentioned techniques to just post a link.

Ex:

https://forums.dragcave.net/topic/189179-2021-07-25-july-dragon-release/

[url]https://forums.dragcave.net/topic/189179-2021-07-25-july-dragon-release/[/url]

If you want to mention someone and catch their attention in their notification, type @ and at least part of their name, and click the matching name in the drop down menu.

Ex:

@Shokomon

@Shokomon

You can also make things a spoiler by highlighting the text and clicking the eyeball, 👁️, or clicking the 👁️ first and entering the text. You can number things or add bullet points by clicking the bulleted or numbered list icons at the top of the reply box. Press "Tab" to indent a created bullet/numbered item. Pressing Shift+Tab undoes the indented item. Spoiler tags and list tags don't seem to work. Or at least, I can't get them too...

Ex:

Spoiler

This is a spoiler.

  1. A numbered spoiler
    1. An indented numbered spoiler
  • A bulleted spoiler
    • An indented bulleted spoiler

Codes I know still work are the following:

  • [ img ] and [ img= ] (For embedding images)
  • [ url ] and [ url= ] (For linking webpages)
  • [ quote ] (Good for when you can't see the quote button, " , in the reply box.)
  • [ code ] (Good for when you can't see the code button, <>, in the reply box.)
  • [ color ] (Only works with specific web color names like redblue, or gold. Hex codes don't work.)
    • (Click the underlined A if visible at the top of the reply box to change color as well.)
  • [ size ] (Only works for sizes 4 and up. Can also be done by clicking "Size" at the top of the reply box.)
  • [ B ], [ I ], [ U ], and [ S ] for bolditalicizedunderlined, and striked out text, though you can use the corresponding buttons at the top of the reply box.
    • (You can also use the keyboard shortcuts, ctrl+b, ctrl+i, and ctrl+u for bolditalicized, and underlined text.)
  • Remember to put closing tags at the end of each section of text you want modified. (Ex: [ color=red ]Red Text[ /color ], aka Red Text)

Please note that in recent news thread, it was stated that the codes will eventually be disabled, so we may not keep these.

I hope this helps!
