Okay, I wasn't sure where to put this, so here tis. I made this little banner because last Christmas, (and the last few holidays actually) we've had several threads bemoaning dead eggs. A big part of the problem is that everyone is getting new eggs and putting them on the fansites at the same time, then they get killed with very few views. Plus, all the people stalking fansites trying to find prize dragons.

 

So, I'm putting this in my sig until Christmas.

 

Anyone else is free to do the same, recolor, re-imagine it or whatever.

 

For the inevitable naysayers: No, I don't expect it to work for everyone. Yes, I know not everyone reads the forum. Yes, they are just pixels.

 

"Safer" Fansite Alternatives

 

These are link exchanges. What a link exchange is, is it trades 1 click per click. Plus, you can specify exactly how many clicks your link gets. So, if you put your dragon scroll up for 50 clicks, you'll get around 50 views. Unlike fansites where you have no idea how many views you'll get. It's pretty easy to get a couple hundred credits for views in a few minutes. Then you can wait for Christmas, set your scroll to get 25-50 views per day for a couple days, etc.

 

Remember, if you don't set a limit to how many views your link get, you'll get bombed as badly as any ER until your credits run out. But, you can set all that up well before you even get an egg.

Correction!

Sickness deaths do not lock up egg slots. Only manually-caused kills (bite, quake, kill) do that.

 

However, a warning that severe sickness and death is a major concern is definitely a good idea.

Hmm. Trying to think back to exactly what happened. People's holiday eggs died. They picked up new ones. However, the dead eggs count toward your holiday limit which is 2 weeks. So the new eggs get auto-abandoned 1 hour after being picked up. So, it is impossible to replace dead holiday eggs unless it's been changed.

 

Oy, how to put that into a small banner. Tis complicated.

 

Anyone know if that part has been changed? I know at one point TJ rezzed a lot of eggs. But that was a special circumstance.

I believe it was changed after last Christmas, when there was such a problem with deaths, so he wouldn't have to potentially mass-revive again. I'm pretty sure that change is still in place. Can anyone remember last Valentine's Day clearly to confirm?

 

Edit: If it's not a permanent change, perhaps "Dead holiday eggs cannot be replaced until next year"? The specifics of why are less important than the result, for something like a warning banner.

The text is too confusing. Complex terms like 'view nuked' won't be understood by newbies. The first couple of lines of the displayed badge seem to suggest that OTHER people are viewbombing your eggs.

Socky is right, both of those hurt my eyes. The wall of text is a turn off.

 

Not trying to be harsh, but I'm just hoping we can get some nice ones that newer members will actually read haha ^^ these badges have the right idea. How about a different font? And make them a little less wordy? Like the one in the siggy above me.

EDIT2: To make the text easy to read, next to the aa image in the Photoshop text editor, I selected 'none'. A pixel based font like 'Visitor BRK' is also legible.

It's unfortunate this thread got moved to the subforums. Hopefully those of us interested in getting the word out can reach a few.

 

As far as changes to the text weight and size, that starts getting very subjective. I don't like ultra skinny text. And I really don't like huge sigs. I'd skip over it. So, it would be better for those with large differences in taste to make their own. It's just text, so it's not difficult. And I'm afraid I'd just go in circles trying to please each individual's personal taste on fonts.

 

Dark, to get the dead egg graphic I didn't have any of the actual gifs. I make a selection of a pink dead egg, and used that to mask off the full egg images of the holiday ones. (hold down command and click dead egg layer icon) Then I used the same selection path on another layer, stroked it one pixel with about a 70% grey.
