<~* Fireflies *~>

Story

Rödenius, a land about the same size of Alagaësia, floated serenely in the ocean and watched the skies pass by. It reached up with glorious mountains, and reflected the clouds of day and night in crystal lakes. Pine trees shaded large patches of land, trying to cover the earth from the warm touch of sunlight and the caress of moonlight. The sweet scent of sap filled the noses of people who travelled through maple forests to gather some of the yummy syrup.

The pine forest that dotted the Rynfor's base was disturbed by what seemed like a giant beast that had a wingspan so large that it caused small wind storms. The mountains' shadows rippled across the scales of the animal, and the the tips of the swaying trees. The dragon, as it was a dragon and not some other beast,- how could a creature bigger than a dragon exist? -circled around a small clearing in the forest. The dragon flapped its wings as it landed on its hind legs, falling back onto all fours. Dusk was falling, and small specks darted in and out of the  bushes. Fireflies; simple creatures but beautiful to observe.

The dragon crooned and dipped his head, laying down so that his rider could slide off. It was a man, with handsome red hair that was tied back in a small, tight ponytail. His pale features was marked with a soft smile, both on his chapped lips and in his weary blue eyes. He was dressed in equipment that was suitable for flight: leather boots and strong trousers, and a simple shirt. An olive green sword with an intricate design on its sheath hung off of the man's belt. Immediately, he went to make a fire, and as soon as it was roaring, the man reached out with his mind to his dragon. Quite beautiful, isn't it?

It is. Fireflies have always caught my eye. Did you know that there have always been fireflies here, Bray?

Of course. Our wonderful Rödenius has always been known for the population of fireflies; there are many more here than anywhere else, aren't there, Oden?

The dragon dipped his head and went to lick at his leg. There was a horrible gash there that Bray noticed, but Oden, as soon as he sensed his rider's concern, looked at him with yellow eyes. Do not worry, young one. That dragon might have gotten me good, as she sank her teeth down to the bone. But I will heal.

I do not understand why the Kingdom is attacking the Riders. Bray's attitude changed, and his dark brow furrowed. The Riders aren't just a group anymore; mostly everyone has dragons, but they must choose to serve King Brendley or not.

King Brendley was the king of Rödenius, and a cruel and cold one at that. He took young Riders from their homes with their fledgling dragons and trained them to work for the Kingdom; this usually made them brainwashed and blind for their king... And those who did not follow the king were killed, their dragon dying with them if they owned one.

Luckily, there are people fighting to defend themselves. Older men and women, such as myself. We cannot risk the younger ones fighting, for they do not even know the potential that they have.

Oden simply crooned and nursed the wound he had received on his forearm. The Rider and his dragon stayed there, silent, watching the fireflies flit lazily to dark corners.

Plot

In the Kingdom of Rödenius, life was spectacular. That was, until the new king took power. The king, as legend says, has two dragons instead of one. No one knows how he got the two dragons, but the Kingdom is forced to bow down to the dragons as much as Brendley. The two dragons are as dark hearted and blood lusting as demons, fueled by jealousy and envy. They work to become their king's favorite, committing horrible acts upon other dragons and riders, and letting nothing stop them.

The first dragon is a beautiful white prowess named Shak'lira. Ultimately used as a breeding dragon, Shak'lira has a whole lineage of pure white dragons, but any wild dragons that had escaped the castle walls and bear Shak'lira's blood are considered a filthy creature by other dragons, even if they are beautiful. Shak'lira became a dragon of envy, lust, and pride... Her claws would not hesitate to tear into the scales of fledglings or the skin of young boys or girls.

The second dragon King Brendley has is a sire of handsome crimson, with eyes such a smoldering shade of amber. His wings are tattered, ripped, but he is still capable of flight. His name is  Alak'zudl, Alak for short. He is a dragon of wrath and destruction, and could breathe fire for dozens of minutes at a time. He is Shak'lira's mate, however, he is also Brendley's riding dragon. He is the one that is brought to battles and patrols.

So, King Brendley took power. It was around this time that the people raised dragons- not just noble persons, but peasants as well. Their eggs were easy to come by, and it wasn't rare to come across one in the forest. Their bodies flashed all the colors you could think of and more. But then the king needed an army. So he began a draft, and the draft gathered many young men, and even women, to serve for him. The thing was that the king waged wars inside of Rödenius's own borders. People didn't know why, but rumors were that towns wanted to overthrow the king. So Brendley became horrible and cruel, and mostly insecure. The young man started to keep everything under an iron grip, his people squirming in his harsh rule. This uncomfortable and frightening treatment sparked a revolution; the people with dragons rose up against the Kingdom. Tooth met claw, sword met sword, and blood met battle. The Kingdom thwarted the sparks of revolution, and for the next twenty years the people of the land lived in seething hate, whether it be in them or around them, directed toward the king.

However, revolution started again, and this time it lasted. For many years up to now, the Rödenius Revolution* raged across the land. This was so because the Riders formed a ragtag army called the Fireflies, dubbing it after the plentiful yet beautiful insects that dotted the land. It seemed like a weak name, and until now many people laugh at it, but they were named after the small creature because it gave light even in the darkest of nights.

Will you be a part of the Fireflies? Or will you serve the king?

Setting

Rödenius is a large stretch of land that is far from Alagaësia. It is more to the south, and it is warmer than most lands. However, it snows in winter, but not often. Rödenius has many small villages, but here are some of the major towns, along with deserts, lakes, mountains, and so forth.

Drie'lino: A fishing town that resides on the ocean side.

Dazurka and Dilmia Rivers: Two rivers that stem from the ocean and run in opposite directions. Named after two dragons that served in the first sparks of the Röderius Revolution.

Elliot: Small, basic town that is built on the edge of a  large stretch of soggy plains.

Elliot-Ana'yal Plains: Large stretch of soggy plains that runs from Elliot to Ana'yal, a lesser town.

Negre Forest: Pine forest that branches off of the Elliot-Ana'yal Plains and toward the north. A small village called Negre is located there.

Rynfor Mountains: Large region of mountains curling around one side of Rödenius.

Unliaet: Mountainside town right under the shadow of the Rynfor mountains.

Unliaet Tunnels: Tunnels under Unliaet that branch for miles. The Fireflies live here.

Wyrd: Largest town of Rödenius, this is where the king's castle is located.

About the People of Rödenius

Unlike Alagaësia, Rödenius is only home to dragons and humans. There are no elves, dwarves, or Urgals.

Humans: Humans in Rödenius are usually tanner than anyone else, with darker hair and eyes. If you want to compare them to people in the real world, think of Latin people, but more like Italian, French, or Spaniards. Though, there are blonds, gingers, and brunettes, but much less than the black haired citizens. Humans who ride dragons live a very long time, and their bonds with their dragons are strong and unbreakable.

Dragons: Dragons, like everywhere else, come in all shapes and colors. However, they only come in solid colors, with four legs and two wings. Their heads may be different sizes or shapes and their tails might be flatter, but they will maintain the original four feet, two winged appearance. They communicate telepathically with humans, more so with their riders. They are wise beasts and are capable of living a long time.

King's Army

Captain

Username: SL

Name: Akama Vondera

Age: 23

Gender: Male

Side: King's Army

Position: Captain

Appearance: Here

Personality: Akama is anything but normal. He may seem like a childish and friendly person on the outside, always smiling and laughing and joking around, but he can turn from an innocent child to a raving, mad psycho in a matter of seconds. He likes decapitating people and collecting cut of limbs. He has a collection of skulls at home and will stop at nothing to get the skull he wants. He's very loyal to the king and acts like the kings son at times, listening to every word his king says. Akama will not help anyone in need, unless ordered to, and only listens to the king. He often says unreasonable things and isn't afraid of killing or getting killed. Sometimes, he tends to get excited at the sight of anything like blood and goes around trying to find someone to decapitate. He will start going mad at the prospect of battle or blood. The only one that can calm him down is his dragon, being interlinked with his mind. Even his own comrades avoid him and make as little contact as much as possible. However, he is good at commanding people in battle and making plans that will result in another's misery and pain. Also very good at keeping the people in check.

History: Akama was born in a rich family who cared a lot out blood and had autism from a young age, shutting himself from the world. In the time he was away from people, he somehow got himself a dragon egg. Soon, his only company was a dragon and a skull. The skull had been given to him in an attempt to lure him outside, but it failed because his dragon snatched it into his room. Akama also had a liking for human skulls from a young age as well, most likely due to inbreeding within his family. At the age of merely 10 years old he snapped and went crazy. His dragon didn't stop him from killing his entire family and taking their skulls. From that day on, Akama developed further interest in skulls and began beheading people in his own town for their heads. The townspeople stayed away from his house that had now become like a haunted mansion. He went absolutely mad, even hurting himself to satisfy his thirst for blood. Eventually his dragon flew to the king's palace, begging for the king to help Akama in return for the two's loyalty and service. After hearing about Akama, the king developed a mild interest for the boy and gave Akama's dragon a way to calm the boy down. Raven thanked him and flew back, calming Akama down and taking some of his savage nature onto himself. Akama is really grateful to the king for helping him and decided to go into the king's ranks, eventually getting into the position he is in now due to a slight accident with the previous captain, which resulted in the young man's death.

Dragon's Information

Name: Raven

Age: 16

Gender: M

Appearance: Raven is a small, black dragon with large fangs and a long curved spike on his tail that make up for his lack of strength in battle. He's pretty fast and almost big enough for Akama to ride. His claws are also long and curved, making him look like a black eagle. He has a few feathers here and there and decapitates people with his claws and fangs to attack.

Personality: Raven is much calmer than Akama, but also has a bit of Akama's psycho personality in him. He is usually the one who makes the decision for Akama to kill or not kill a person, but he has no mercy for anyone. He is often the one to give orders to those who serve under Akama as Akama creeps most of the soldiers out. He also has a love for decapitation, just like Akama.

Sire: Crow, a black dragon

Dame: Lilac, a blue dragon

Other: Akama wields a long scythe in battle.

Basil was lying on Emeri's back, quietly reading. This would probably be the only time that he would be quiet and actually listen. Actually, he was amazed he could even stay quiet for long enough. He would begin to start squirming. He put the book down on his chest spine up so that he didn't lose his spot and sighed.

"Why don't you read me the passage in your book if you're getting bored?" Emeri said softly in his mind, stretching out her wings for a little bit of air. She, like Basil didn't like being cooped up for too long and his temper could fly at any given moment. It was times like these that where best for him if he starts to get in a foul mood.

Anya walked around the caverns, Ladon following after her. She had a book in her hands and Ladon pressed his muzzle into her side. Its quite dark here, is it not?

Yes, I know. But I have good vision.

Ladon rolled his eyes and followed Anya around. He really was worried about her tripling over herself with her nose in her book.

Nirvarda wandered through the Rynfor mountains. Running for her life. She had the Kingdom on her tail and she wouldn't fall. She was neutral, always had been. She supported neither side, not the Kingdom, not the fireflies. She looked above her and spotted Mythril flying high above, watching for her safety. What news, Mythril? What can you see?

Mythril flew around the peaks, even if he stuck out like a sore thumb. But he didn't care. He would protect her for as long as he lived, even if it meant running after her. So far, so good. Our lead is increasing but it won't keep forever. We have to do something drastic and we have to do something soon. Even if that means joining the Fireflies and fighting for our freedom.

Apostol.

Apostol wearily looked head, his semi long black hair buffeting backwards. Usually he would not have heard someone say his name, but Vereva was reaching out to him. Apostol clung to the spine of the great dragonness, and looked ahead. A blue form was circling the leaks of the Rynfor Mountains.

Yes, Vereva. I see them. Reach out to that dragon, would you? Maybe we could see what it wants.

The gray dragon narrowed her green eyes as she reached out with her mind. It was hard to communicate because it already seemed to be speaking with someone.

You! What are you doing here? Circling like a scavenger?

Mythril pulled away from Nirvarda to find another dragon speaking to him through a mental link. He landed on a peak and tried to pinpoint the location. It wasn't easy and he was failing miserably.

Nirvarda could sense he had stopped. She looked up but couldn't see him. She reached out to him but he wasnt responding "Mythril? Mythril! Where are you?!"

The dragon wasn't listening. That doesn't concern you unless you have good reason to know. If you a harmless and have good reason to know, you may have noticed a group of footsoldiers racing through the mountains as we speak. My rider is fleeing, trying to escape them. That is all you should or need to know withought good reason.

Kaiya shouldered her pale longbow before continueing through the tunnels. Azula walked close by her side, nearly filling the passageway. Warmth radiated from her belly as an eternal fire burned within. Kaiya sensed another presence ahead, but reconized it at once as Anya and Ladon. She did not greet them, but lowered the walls to her mind if they wished to make contact.

Basil snapped close his book and sat properly on Emeri's back. "Let's go for a ride shall we?" He said, a grin growing on his face. Maybe he would cause some trouble up at any enemy camp. Emeri, however seemed wary of whatever he was planning.

"Basil, I hope you aren't planning anything." She said with a slight warning in her tone as she started to fly off. After a few minutes the dragon noticed another dragon flying. She didn't say anything, Basil would probably have noticed the dragon by this point.

Ah, you are a male. It is rare for me to find a wild male, as I do not go out often. Vereva snarled softly at the dragon. She was not used to any of this wild dragon things. Dragons without a rider made her confused. Why were they all alone here..? I advise that you leave. This is Firefly territory. We cannot risk any strangers here.

Apostol landed Vereva on the adjacent peak. He looked over at the blue dragon. Vereva seemed to curl her lip just a bit. He patted her on the head and she calmed down.

Anya blinked when she heard claws scrape across cave floor. Ladon swiveled his head to the side and blinked when he noted that it was a she dragon, a friend of the sorts. Hello, Azula. How goes the morrow? he asked with a low croon. Anya blinked again at Kaiya, frowning when she did not speak. But as she proded softly at her with her mind, she could tell that there was absolutely no resistance. "Good morning, Kaiya."

Mythril knew she didn't think he had a rider he flicked his tail before leaping off the peak, into a crevice just big enough. He waited for Nirvarda to come. When she did, he signalled for her to get on. Come on, we're going for a ride. He waited for her to settle before he spread his wings up the peak he was just on and faced the female dragon. This good enough for ya? he asked as he stared at her.

Nirvarda watched the other dragon carefully. Her and Mythril's bond was strong. She looked at the soldiers, they looked lost and confused. Their target had just... Vanished.

Vereva raised her hackles, snarling as Myrith disappeared. Apostol grunted and grabbed onto one of her spikes, trying to pet her scales and calm her. Peace, Vereva. That dragon just wants to get the bad side of you.

Then he will! Oh, may the gods help me... I will blow fire into his mouth! Vereva was angry. But she paused as the dragon appeared, this time with a rider. Haha, so funny. You won't be so funny when I claw your tail!

"Hello!" Apostol used his outside voice. But seeing that they see too far to communicate, he struggled to nudge against the female rider's mind, trying to prod and poke. Hello! Can you hear me? I am Apostol, leader of the Fireflies. What are you doing here?

I'm well, and you? Azula replied, blinking at the male dragon. Her soft blue gaze studied his larger frame for a moment before resting to meet his.

Kaiya smiled slightly and said, Good morning Anya. You know I am not the talkitive type. Besides, enemy soldiers cannot hear our thoughts. A habit I've developed I suppose.

Yes, I am well. I just wish I could bask in the sun some more. Not just stay down here for so long. Ladon caught her look and tucked his wings in self consciously. His blue eyes drifted down to his Rider.

Yes, but we are safe down here, no? Anyway, I am not the talkative type either. I wonder when there will be action other than our dragons laying around... Anya ran a hand through her brown hair and looked at Kaiya.

"It has been very quiet lately," Kaiya spoke out loud. Indeed, Azula interjected. I have not been able to fly freely for too many days. I cannot wait to leave these tunnels. Kaiya absentmindedly placed her hand to the dragon's side. She too missed the wind in her hair and the thrill of flight. Despite the wishful thinking, she wanted to fly across the whole of the land without being troubled by the king or his men. She could only dream.

Mythril listened to what she said. She was touchy and he didn't even know what he had done wrong. Nonetheless, he stayed silent and watched. He was prepared to protect Nirvarda with his life.

I am Nirvarda and yes, I can hear you. I am a target for the kingdom, I am being followed. She pointed solemnly to the soldiers on the ground. I came here to escape them, but it seems your dragon and mine don't seem to get on. That means, I ran into more trouble. I am neutral, thus making me a target for the Kingdom. I fled to the mountains to escape, to hide. Please help us, we're desperate. she looked at him sadly with her blue eyes, the desperation in her mind making her message sound uneasy and nervous. Her long blonde hair fell around her back.

Mythril sensed her feeling. He purred lowly to try and calm her. They were so close. It would pain him if something happened to her and he was sure of the same on her part. He looked at the female sadly, he was only looking out for Nirvarda and he had gotten himself into trouble already.

Maybe it is for the best. Maybe Vereva and Apostol think that it is too dangerous. Ladon scratched the ground impatiently with his strong, black claws. I have not been able to breathe fire, at least not yet. I am too young. I am only old enough to fly my rider and no one else.

Anya, seeing her dragon's distress, tapped her hand against his hard scales. "It has indeed been tough around here. But I think it is stupid that no one is really allowed to leave..."

I don't trust them. Vereva snarled and curled her lips, shaking pearly white fangs and smoke began to spill forth from them. Her tail twitched, but Apostol have her an angry look and she looked over her shoulder. What?

We would be glad to help you. As I probably said, I am Apostol, leader of the Fireflies, and this is Vereva. We need more hands on our side. If you wish to come with me, it is better to travel by foot..

Nirvarda nodded. Alright, I'll do it. she waited for further instructions and to be shown the way. She gently patted Mythril's head to calm him, she could see he was uneasy around this female dragon.

Mythril moved a little. He didn't take his eyes off the female unless it was check if Nirvarda was ok. He eventually hung his head and gave in, he didn't want to fight her. I'm sorry if there's anything I've done to upset you. I can tell you don't trust me but still, I am sorry. If there's anything I can do, just let me know and I'll do it if it's within my power.

Vereva blinked in surprise when Mythril apologized. Really? Had he just done that? Her green eyes narrowed and she hung her head in some sort of a dip. No worries. I am usually anxious and sharp around other dragons, that is, if I've never seen them before. Vereva got into the position that Apostol could slide off of her, and land onto the ground below him without harm. Vereva unfurled her wings and took off to the sky, flying high enough so that she could be easily mistaken as a bird from the ground.

So. What is your name? Apostol said, giving Nirvarda the one look over before he began to walk away.

Nirvarda asked Mythril to land on more solid ground. He did so and she slid off and ran to catch up with Apostol. "I'm Nirvarda. I have already said that but that's ok, things are easily forgotten." she walked beside him, not wanting to get lost.

Mythril took to the air, flying low over Nirvarda, making sure nothing happened. He looked up at the other dragon. I'm Mythril, this is my rider, Nirvarda. Who are you? he said in a much easier and calmer tone, now that she'd calmed down.

[she said that? Oh, God. *facepalm* Brainfart. xd.png]

"Ah, you did? Sorry, things are just so stressful lately." Apostol ran a hand through his hair as to emphasize his point. The two walked in silence, however, and as he tried to make conversation with his dragon again, she shoved him away. Wow. Was she that angry? "So, Nirvada. Where do you come from?" he kept his voice low, just in case.

I am Vereva. My father was a great dragon and my mother is... I never really knew her. Vereva beat her wings against the wind.
