Put it this way. Say the sun comes up at 3 o'clock in the morning. Would you want to get up at that time? Or would you like to sleep in until '4'? 

 

It's not just the farmers you see, but everyone else. Not everyone can get up that early in the morning.

EDIT: Fort you missed my reasoning, would you rather get up later and stay up later, or get up earlier and pack it in earlier (albeit when there's still light)

We get more sun in the summer months. It comes up earlier and goes in later. In the old days you couldn't exactly carry a light source around with you, so sunlight was essential. 

 

Say the sun normally comes up at four o'clock. In the summer months it's now three o'clock. Many people would struggle to get up at that time (especially if you weren't used to it), so they made three o'clock into four o'clock.

But by changing time in all is weird.

I thought you moved it forward in the summer than back in the winter. The way you describe it, it's move it forward in summer, back in autum, then backwards in winter, back in spring.
