The Halmista Academy of Magic and Science

Recommended Posts

BACKGROUND
The Halmista Academy of Magic and Science is an institute dedicated to the advancement of civilizations all over the galaxy. It was founded by ________ Halmista, whose existence, and full name, continues to evade detection. Rumor has it that Halmista never existed, and the school came to be of its own accord. Similar rumors also speculate that the school itself is Halmista, that the two are one and the same. Students of HAMS are invited to attend the school, and invitation letters could arrive at any moment of the prospective student's life. HAMS wants to teach its students to reach for their goals, no matter their background.

SAGE is an intergalactic organization whose leaders are unknown and speak to the public through puppets. Conquered planets must submit to SAGE's will, while their leaders become mere figureheads, in place just to project an image of normalcy. The planets are then rebuilt from the very foundation, with everything from architecture to government to culture reworked to ensure maximum order and control.

PLOT

Courtesy of PaperCakes

Light is overwhelming the universe. Order and law reign supreme, but with them comes a lack of freedom and a mindless obedience. SAGE is the name of the faceless organization that is taking over entire galaxies and forcing them to convert to its beliefs of absolute order. Halmista is just one of many factions fighting for what is anarchy in SAGE's eyes. Almost all of the Halmista students come from free planets, but there are also some who are refugees from SAGE invasions. Whether you will be an advocate of chaos, a supporter of SAGE, or just another onlooker is up to you. It's certainly a cliché, but the fate of the universe is in your hands.

SETTING
The story can take place in the Academy or on any other planet in the universe, whether it is taken over by SAGE or not. Although for simplicity's sake most of the RPing will probably be confined to the Academy. SAGE followers have no place in Halmista, or so they are told, but anyone has a right to freedom and expression, so some students may be SAGE followers. Most of those students have agreed to not cause trouble, but there are select few who have chosen to try to take down the school from the inside.

RULES
 1. Follow all Dragon Cave Forums rules.
 2. Greenglassesgal and PaperCakes are co-hosts.
 3. Post forms in the OoC, but it's fine if they're PM'd to me (or GGG or Paper) too.
 4. Keep everything PG-13.
 5. No godmodding or powerplay.
 6. There is no length requirement, but try your best to avoid one-liners and the like. Good spelling and grammar is also appreciated.
 7. There is no character limit, but don't overdo it either. If you've got multiple characters, perhaps label their paragraphs to make things less confusing.
 8. Even though it's an academy, there isn't a concrete age range for the students. They can range from early teens to well into the hundreds (human years). Anyone can go to school if they want to, after all.
 9. To prove you've read the rules, give me an idea for what the abbreviation SAGE could stand for. Put it before your forms.
 10. You can create your own alien species and planets for this RP; just fill out the form. Try not to make the aliens overpowered or godlike. It doesn't matter how they evolved or developed; no one is invincible.
 11. Teachers will probably be NPCs with short character sheets, but you can create your own or control them at your whim too. The ones marked with * are not meant for general use.
 12. I have a tendency to make way too detailed character forms so honestly the Personality and Background sections are basically optional.

Alien and Planet

(Alien name), of (planet name)
Write a few paragraphs describing the alien species and their home planet.
What do they look like? Do they have any inhuman abilities? How do they name their children? Religion? Do they have a range of genders/sexes, a few distinct ones, or just one? What's their planet like? Could humans live there? What kind of plant life and wildlife grows there?
The introduction doesn't have to follow these questions, but do try to make it detailed enough that other people could create characters with the alien species if they so choose.

COURSES

Some classes will have additional electives, so students can pursue the subject further if they wish. For example, if a student were to choose Elementalism as a class, they could also learn Botany as an elective. Joint classes are a set of classes required to be taken together.

Alchemy

Making things from other things—yes, that includes gold.

Astrology

Channel the energy of the cosmos, using it to predict the future. Use your knowledge to imbibe creations with effects that vary with the celestial cycles.

Blacksmithing

Learn about all kinds of weapons and how to make them. Joint class with Metallurgy elective.

Electives

Clockmaking

A more delicate form of smithing. Making pocket watches and clocks that can be used as vessels to harness the power of time, as well as other geared machines. Joint class with Chronokinesis.

Calligraphy

Use ink to create solid structures with all the colors of the rainbow. Make your doodles come to life. Joint class with Papercraft.

Culinary Intuition

Make delicious food from any materials, heighten your sense of taste and smell. Helps tremendously in brewing potions.

Electives

Potion Making

Right what it says on the tin.

Etherkinesis

Controlling life force, chi, quintessence, etc. Also highly controversial. Joint class with Electrokinesis elective.

Elementalism

Harness the powers of water, fire, earth and air.

Electives

Botany

Learn to care for and control plants and the like.

Metallurgy

Learn to control metals. Joint class with Blacksmithing.

Cryokinesis

Learn to manipulate ice.

Electrokinesis

Learn to wield raw electricity, among other types of energy. Joint class with Etherkinesis.

Hypnotism

Learn to identify symptoms of mind-control and how to defend oneself from psychic attacks. Work on your skills of persuasion. A note to prospective students: this class does not teach students how to force their will on others due to ethical issues.

Illogical Argument

Freely redefine possibility, and achieve fundamentally impossible feats on a whim.

Linguistics

Learn any alien language out of the 639 that are available. Hear famous speeches in intergalactic history and learn how a single word can create an entirely different chain of events from what one was expecting.

Lucid Dreaming

No, it wasn't just a dream. Learn to master your dreams (both good and bad) and make them reality. Traverse the dream worlds of others and confront the realm of nightmares and fears. A note to prospective students: please don’t treat this class as an excuse to nap.

Meteorology

Predict, interpret, and control the weather. Stand and gesture in front of green screens without feeling too awkward! A note to prospective students: while not required, it is helpful to have taken the Cryokinesis elective beforehand.

Music

Learn or improve your skills with an instrument or your voice. Use sound and rhythm as a basis for attacking and generating energy.

Necromancy HIGHLY CONTROVERSIAL; CANCELLED BY POPULAR DEMAND

Summon the dead and have them at your every beck and call.

Papercraft

A course that teaches the skill of manipulating paper under the pretense of the art of origami. Joint class with Calligraphy.

Sewing

Starting with knitting, knots, and needlework, advance your thread-manipulating skills to the point of working with the threads of fate and connection themselves. Extends to puppetry and some aspects of voodooism.

Summoning

Learn to call objects to locations of your choice on a whim. Work with all forms of communication, from telepathy to mirrors to the Internet.

Electives

Demonology

Learn the difference between a benevolent spirit and a spiteful ghoul, and how to summon and seal them.

Beast Taming

Learn to commune, command, and, most importantly, bond with any animal.

Theory of Antimagic

Highly controversial course that discusses the possibility of the existence of antimagic, a substance that naturally negates magic and all magical properties of objects.

Technomancy

Learn to code and write programs. Advance to the point of manipulating reality itself. Yes, this class does cover video games.

Theory of Magic

A mandatory course that discusses what exactly makes magic work, and how it can be linked with science. The two are essentially one and the same, but varying levels of technology and civilization (which is all relative, really; everything's relative) say otherwise.

Time Travel

Manipulating time, hopping back and forth, stopping and slowing time, freezing someone or something in time, jumping timelines. Joint class with Clockmaking elective.

Lissam, of Lahai-Y'ha

At birth, they are bipedal and are born with lungs, allowing them to live on land easily. They have webbing between their fingers and toes, and have a small, skinny tail. Their skin is lightly speckled with silvery scales, and they have a ridge on their back that runs along their spine. They also have slits on their neck, though they don't have working gills yet. As they grow older, their legs start to shrink as their tail gets larger and wider, eventually turning into two little nubs on either side of the tail. They also sprout tail fins and fully develop their gills. At this point, they will probably have moved to the water, as they'd be forced to either drag themselves on their arms or use a wheelchair to move around on land. Other changes include a retractable dorsal fin along the ridge on their backs and gaining more tinted scales on their bodies. Scales can come in a wide variety of colors, the most common being blues, blacks, browns and greens. It is not uncommon for one to stay silver their whole lives, though. On the flip side, rainbow and exotic colored (like hot pink) scales have been reported before, though the chances of such a mutation are pretty rare.

Their planet is mostly covered in water, save for large clumps of atolls here and there. The children of this species live on these atolls, while their parents watch over them from the inner lagoons. Once they get old enough, they can move to the underwater cities. These cities are normally located near kelp forests so that there is enough oxygen to be comfortable. Unfortunately, since there aren't too many locations that can actually support these cities, they are usually very crowded, and the cost of living can get pretty high. Some (mainly female) Lissam apply to become nannies on the atolls just to avoid the crowds and the costs. The unlucky ones that can't afford the cities and fail to get a job on the atolls are forced to live on the outskirts of civilization with little resources to go around. To alleviate this problem, the government created a child license that couples must buy in order to raise a family. This doesn't stop desperate families from getting licenses through illegal means and leaving their kids without the money they need to go to the city. As such, most members of this race are very competitive and business-oriented in order to keep up.

While most Lissam are now unreligious, one ancient Lissam church known as The Cult of the Abyss worships demonic Eldritch-esque gods. While it has a somewhat unsavory past, time has tamed this religion. Shrines and churches are still open for tourism.

Partial bump so as to not lose track of this. Just gonna plop this WIP form here while we flesh out the RP.

Username: GGG

Name: Nuramini Sharm (Nura for short)

Species: Lissam

Age: 15

Gender: Female

Sexuality: Pansexual

Appearance: Nura looks like your standard mid-developed Lissam. Standing at 140cm, she measures 172cm from head to tail fin-tip. She has gold eyes with no visible sclera and a grin full of sharp teeth. Her skin is still mostly silver, with some blue-ish green scales. Like the rest of her species, she doesn't have hair. Instead, she has two ear-fin-thingies sticking out from either side of her head, and another one running down the center of her head like a mohawk. She prefers not to wear shoes or socks, instead wearing enchanted anklets that increase the durability of her feet. In addition, she usually wears skirts modified to account for her developing tail.

Personality: Despite her quirks, Nura is a reasonably friendly, level-headed fish girl. A curious soul, she loves to learn more about the world around her. She is also pretty blunt, and has no qualms saying whatever's on her mind whenever she wants. More to be developed.

Background: Up until a few years ago, Nura lived a pretty average life. When she was around 12, she discovered her magic potential after accidentally freezing over some of the lagoon. Her mother, who had ties the Cult of the Abyss, wanted to send her to her great aunt to study the scriptures of Deep Ones and become a priestess like her other magically-inclined ancestors. Her father, seeing the practical side of her powers, wanted her to break tradition and study at the academy. They eventually came to a compromise, agreeing to give Nura three years at each to try. This is her first year at the academy. More to be RP'd.

Faction: Chaos
