ANSWERED:Scrolledex

@psyrae:

I don't know about different pages. That would imply that every dragon out there has breed information, which it doesn't. Very select few do. I don't see having a problem with having a separate page for those that do, linked below the name on the main page. Having different pages, though, is a lot more work.

There already is a page that has the startings of what I think most of us are referring to; http://dragcave.net/help/limits .

True, but I'd like to see something like this used as a reason to flesh out even existing dragons more. I'm a sucker for world-building. But yeah, I suppose it's deviating from the original intent.

Scrolledex was just the first thing I thought of. I don't care what we name it. tongue.gif "Bestiary" and "Dragon's Book" or "Book of Dragons" all sound great! The important thing is just having some kind of on-site checklist that helps you know that you are missing some breeds.

This feature certainly doesn't have to include overlay images of the adult sprites that you haven't collected, if some people are worried that a silhouette would spoil the surprise too much or the spriters wouldn't go for it. I think it would be cool but it's not vitally necessary. For this detail, TJ could just decide whichever way he thinks is best.

Here's what I think should show up for the dragons you have already completely collected:

1. Breed name

2. Image of the egg/eggs, with the egg description

3. Image of the hatchling/hatchlings

4. Image of the adult/adults

5. Biomes found (or breed-only, or holiday, etc.)

6. Maybe some fun little tidbits about the dragon that aren't in the description

7. The "class" of the dragon--i.e. wyvern, lyndwurm, pygmy, 2-headed, western, etc.

8. Whether your dragons are lineaged or CB (with no suggestion that one or the other is better)

Optional:

9. Some indicator of whether you've collected all frozen hatchling sprites, since some people care about this.

Here's what I think should show up for the dragons you have already collected some of the adult sprites of, but not all of the adult sprites:

1. Breed name

2. Image of the egg/eggs, with the egg description

3. Image of the hatchlings that you have collected with a silhouette or question mark filler spot for the hatchlings you haven't raised. I.e. if you have adult male and female black dragons on your scroll you'd see the ungendered, male, and female regular black hatchies (even if you didn't freeze any...having the adults is enough). But you wouldn't see the sprites for the alt hatchlings...you'd see a silhouette or another image (?) that suggests you are missing something.

4. Image of the adult/adults that you have collected, with a silhouette or question mark for the adults you are missing

Here's what I think should show up for dragons you don't have any adults of:

1. Image of the egg/eggs, with the egg description

2. Biomes found (or breed-only, or holiday, etc.)

3. Silhouettes or question marks for all hatchling and adult images

If applicable:

4. Images of applicable hatchlings, if you have frozen ones or have hatchlings growing on your scroll.

....And that's it! This would give a collector enough information to know that they are missing a breed and give them an idea of where to find it. But the adult would still be a surprise.

The only question unanswered would be, how should the Scrolledex indicate that some alts are collectable from the cave, and some are breed only? Or should it just not indicate either way and leave it up to the user to figure out? By the way when I say "alt" I don't mean a rarer version of a more common sprite--when I say "alt" I'm referring to any adult/hatchling sprite that's different from another adult/hatchling sprite of the same breed, due to something else besides gender. Generally, they're just recolors but sometimes totally different poses as well.

Doing something like that might be problematic, though--artist's have to consent to recolors like that, as far as I'm aware. Also, would the dexes show spriter's alts?

Nah. The only alts that need to be included would be alts that the average user can obtain.

There are already features planned (that have been in development for a long time) that would answer the original request. As such, I don't see the need for leaving discussion open.
