Reminded me a lot of American Gods, especially once you figure out that one of the characters (and his mother and son fit neatly in the picture, as well) is an analogue for a certain Trickster cultural hero. Loved the ending -- sneaky and beautiful, and much to think about! Edited March 11, 2011 by Danne Share this post Link to post
Posted March 13, 2011 Book Number: 163 Number Of Pages: 416 Book Title: Alvin Journeyman (Alvin Maker #4) Audio Author: Orson Scott Card Review: I do like this series but so far it seems like Good Alvin, Bad Calvin, Weak, loving Peggy. It's getting to be a bit repeativtive, even if Alvin finally did marry Peggy. I have book 5 on cd but I'm taking a short break from the series. Book Number: 164 Number Of Pages: 400 Book Title: Another Pan (Another Series, #2) Author:Daniel Nayeri Review: I must admit, the Egyptian legends were awesome to read about but John annoyed the living daylights out of me. SPOILER He knows they are looking for bones and he goes and hands an arm bone to the semi-bad guy. And he's all like, Oh yeah, bad woman who stuck a hook in my arm, tearing it to bits, is coming after me. I'll just stand here and let her stick the same hook in my stomach, why not. *grumbles* Not to even mention all the "hood talk". I liked book 1 a whole lot better. I'm actually listening to Book 1 as I take a break from Alvin Share this post Link to post

Posted March 14, 2011 (edited) @Nimrodel: How did you like Shaman's Crossing? I had purchased it some years ago and found it hard to get into. Book Number: 97 Number Of Pages: 268 pgs Book Title: Sleeping with the Fishes Author: Mary Janice Davidson Rating: 2/5 Review: Fred is a mermaid. She doesn't sing, or sits on rocks mooning after human princes, and does not have friends named Flounder, Sebastian or Scuttle. No. Instead, she works as a marine biologist, is crabby and unsocial, and somewhat oblivious to the admiration of the two men who will make up the damn love triangle, and has a metrosexual guy friend named Jonas. I think I like reading about women scientists, I like the fact that Fred is an unconventional female (cranky instead of sweet and loving), and how due to her dual heritage, is stronger than her best friend, Jonas. I was also tickled by the fact that she was a mermaid who was allergic to shellfish and a marine biology who got seasick on boats. Humor such as this was evident, especially once the visiting marine biologist and the Prince of the Black Sea enter Fred's life. Poor Fred. Life was hard enough with the marine residents of the aquarium decided to go on a food-strike. Now she needs to decide on what to do about her too obvious admirers. Yep. It has a damn love triangle (Sorry, DON'T LIKE them). There was also some plot about finding out who was using the ocean as some sort of dumping site, and Jonas mooning after Fred's boss, an older woman he had been crushing on for six years but nothing substantial. The entire book was a nice, entertaining read. Unfortunately, I am not at all sure her writing style (and some humor) is right for me. Book Number: 102 Number Of Pages: 271 pgs Book Title: Swimming Without a Net Author: MaryJanice Davidson Rating: 3/5 Review: Fred was selfish, wanting both guys to herself while pushing them away. Nonetheless, I think I enjoyed this one better than the first one. Book Number: 103 Number Of Pages: 314 pgs Book Title: Slave Author: Cheryl Brooks Rating: 2/5 Review: Um, it was silly. Even silly, first half was okay. It started getting a bit more ridiculous second half. Will have to review properly later. Edited March 28, 2011 by Maladroit Share this post Link to post
Posted March 15, 2011 @Nimrodel: How did you like Shaman's Crossing? I had purchased it some years ago and found it hard to get into. I'm a bit torn, actually. As a whole I like the story, but I found a fair share of the book to be quite slow. I'm hoping that it's just because it's the first book, and the whole story and all the characters must be established at some point. I hope the story will pick up the pace in the next two books. It was my favorite Xanth novel when I was a child. Book Number: 167 Number Of Pages: 224 Book Title: Forever Found Author: Jlee Meyer Review: I actually liked this. Posted March 23, 2011 Book Number: 27 Number Of Pages: 441 Book Title: Extraordinary Engines Editor: Nick Gevers Rating: 3/5 Review: I've been picking away at this book for a looooong time, which ought to tell you my overall feelings toward it. I really like anthologies, because as a busy college student I rarely have time to sit down and just read the way I like. Collections of short stories like these allow me to enjoy a fully fleshed out story that just happens to be shorter than my usual books -- pick it up, read story, return to work. The problem is that most of these stories are... Well. Sort of meh. There was one story I really enjoyed ("The Lollygang Saves the World On Accident" by Jay Lake), and wouldn't mind reading more about these characters and/or that world. This is counted by one story that I absolutely, positively hated, such that I can't discuss it without frothing at the mouth, ranting and raving, and generally getting more worked up than a short story from an author I've never heard of before is worth. But overall, the stories aren't bad. They're not even "not good." They're just sort of... meh. *sigh* It's so hard to find good steampunk. Share this post Link to post

Posted March 25, 2011 @Kanaye: I have Book 1 of the Bay City series. I think I got it as a freebie. What did you dislike about it? @lightbird: How was Anansi Boys compared to American Gods? I've been meaning to read Anansi Boys for a while but I didn't like American Gods as much as I did Neverwhere so I've been putting it off. @Danne: Have you read The Iron Duke by Meljean Brooks? I heard that that was really good. And yeah, the Abyss Feeders are definitely creepy. Share this post Link to post

I don't know, this is the first Gaiman book I've ever read. /shrugs Edit: Finished another one this morning! Book Number: 47 Number Of Pages: 245 Book Title: The Left Hand of Darkness Author: Ursula Le Guin Review: It's a sci-fi novel about an envoy from Earth to a planet whose humanoid inhabitants are hermaphroditic and with monthly cycles of sexual activity/sterility, his attempts on convincing the local authorities to join the Ekumenical union of planets and the implications of the lack of the physical/mental duality of the people on the order of their society. Really loved this one, although it reads rather slowly. Edited March 26, 2011 by lightbird Share this post Link to post
