Posted May 16, 2010 @ grimace - careful... It should be alright. I am simultaniously saving them from getting poisoned. Only problem is I have to actually dig them up. lol Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 Oh, you're digging them up? Get pics if you can! Some of my fave. insects are syrphids. Anyone here know of syrphid flies? Flies that look like bees/wasps. I love freakin' people out by getting a fly to land on me, then running up to a person all "IT A GONNA STING JOO." Share this post Link to post

I love freakin' people out by getting a fly to land on me, then running up to a person all "IT A GONNA STING JOO." I'll try for pictures. I have to hurry though, and scoop as much of the colony into a couple 5 gallon buckets before they have a chance to fully swarm. Supposedly one sting from them is about equal to 12 honeybee stings. and I assume nothing will make them angrier than digging up the entire nest. On the plus side I'll have a MASSIVE ant farm. lol Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 Set up ant farm first, then get epic pics of inner workings of the ant's world. What're you using for it? What will you feed them? Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 Set up ant farm first, then get epic pics of inner workings of the ant's world. What're you using for it? What will you feed them? I can try for inner workings. They are using an old 50 gallon for the nest, so I wont be able to see much if the tunnels and such unfortunatly. Hard to keep that massive amount of ants in a normal formicarium. I can definatly get pictures of them in the setup though. i'm thinking of feeding them a staple of grass seed (which is supposed to be most of their natural diet), anything dead in the roach colony (which isnt often), and a ton of other odds and ends. Posted May 16, 2010 Sounds good, grimace. Can't wait ^^ Hunter... that vid is horrific, awe-inspiring, and quite... curious. I think I'll try doing that with my colony. Although they are like a half inch, so they might just hack up and carry off bones too. Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 No probs. We had similar problems in the phobias thread, so I added a lil' clause. I'm always sad when we have to set out traps... the wild mice are so cute. But they widdle in the rice. Really. ... Theres hav-a-heart traps. Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 Theres hav-a-heart traps. We've tried live traps before, but they keep coming back. Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 We've tried live traps before, but they keep coming back. Just as long as you dont use glue traps. Glue traps are just about the most painful way to kill anything. Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 Yeah, I heard/read about that... snap-traps, gruesome but more effective. I don't like poison either. Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 Have you tried a cat? Don't feed it, and it should hunt them on it's own. (Of course feed it if it can't catch them, mind you) Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 I'm allergic, my stepdad's allergic, and my mom is super-sensitive to smells. Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 I'm sorry. I'll look some stuff up. Until then, I'd say peanut butter on a snap trap. They love the peanut butter. Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 We tried peanut butter, but they somehow manage to lick it off without setting the trap off. We use cheese now. Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 I'm not a fan of most creepy crawlies. I'm sure many people on the forums know of my phobia and hatred of anything with more than four legs. Jewel beetles are pretty though. and I love snakes. They are so damn cute. /snakefan Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 We tried peanut butter, but they somehow manage to lick it off without setting the trap off. We use cheese now. A dog will catch mice better than cats apparently.... Anyways, whatever your bait, don't set the traps for like a week, so they feel safe and are more likely to eat from it. Remove all food sources (if it's like a basement or something), try to eradicate their cover, and if you can find where they came from, patch that up so more don't come in. Posted May 16, 2010 Is that like when people wear bugs as jewelry? Well, really I wouldn't mind it as long as people don't make me touch one. I hate touching bugs. Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 I'm scared to death of bugs. If I saw someone wearing a centipede, I would lose my mind. Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 It's pretty restricted to beetles, as they're sturdy and such. Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 -twitch- Bugs. Someone hand me my exterminator kit plz. I cannot stand anything with more than four legs. I cannot stand anything with four legs, furry, and eat EBERYFING. Lizards, snakes, bats, and a few others are ok with me. Some are downright kyoot! Share this post Link to post
Posted May 16, 2010 D'awwful snakes of d'aww: Knot of snake, anyone? D'AAW Sucks you have to trap your mice Rhea. I use a humane trap lathered with peanut butter, or my Bengal. I'd stay away from poisons, mice eat them then die behind stuffs, its uckylicious. -- Also, in the animal cruelty/skinning thread, you said you were Chinese? Really? I never envisioned you as Chinese..x3 Share this post Link to post
