Welcome to the final round of judging in the EGA Build-A-Fort contest! Building forts has long been a tradition among youngsters—who doesn’t have fond memories of draping blankets over furniture in increasingly elaborate arrangements? Build-A-Fort seeks to draw out the creative architect within each young dragon, challenging them to build the best fort in all of DC. The following entries have survived the panel of judges thus far, and each participant has already been rewarded with an all-expenses-paid trip to a randomly selected resort, but the time has come to choose the single best fort from among them.
All the way over to the left is the creation of A RED STRIPE EGGY FROM THE BEACHES OF LAGIE AND A SUN EGGY FROM THE PORTS OF MOUSIA! Having grown up among the salt and sand by the sea, these eggies built a majestic sandcastle, nestled inside multiple layers of walls, dikes, and moats to keep the ocean out. The central building contains six rooms large enough for the average eggy: three on the first floor, two on the second, and a dungeon. Each corner also sports a three-story tower, connected by intricately adorned walls. The castle and its adjourning buildings house everything from kitchens to ballrooms to servants’ quarters to a tavern or two, all arrayed around a neat little courtyard and coral garden. This grand construction survived all the way into the final round, and won the stripe a room in DeadlyKitteh’s resort, and the sun a lovely villa at amberheun’s oasis!
Next is the interesting space-rock structure of A MAGMA EGGY FROM THE VOLCANIC ISLES OF ASHURA09 AND A SILVER TINSEL FROM THE MINES OF RHUNYA! From the outside, this ‘fort’ just looks like a giant black rock riddled with holes. However, this rock contains an intricate system of tunnels leading to and from perfectly spherical rooms. The smooth walls are sprinkled with hints of miniscule crystals, causing everything to sparkle when a light goes by. This fort was molded out of boiling lava, which solidified slowly enough for the magma to control the position and size of the air pockets that bubbled up from below. Though this isn’t as easy as it sounds, the tinsel claims that its job was by far the hardest: cleaning and polishing every surface once the thing had been extracted from the ground. Thanks to all that incessant polishing, and the magma’s expert tunneling, the fort has dazzled all previous judges, and now the tinsel eggy gets to stay at the home of velvet-curse, while the magma will enjoy the luxuries of echoliz’s home!
Following in our progression down the line is a more traditional fort, belonging to A PILLOW EGGY FROM THE FURNITURE FACTORIES OF PAIGE201208! For a while, this eggy has been secretly stealing cushions from the factory, and only recently has it had a legitimate excuse to use them. Relying on the flimsy laws of physics (mainly gravity and the ideas behind buttresses and triangles), the eggy built a pyramidal pillow fort that barely fits inside conventional dragon caves. On the inside, it’s a multi-story mini-cave, with a spiral staircase running up the middle. Unlike the stripe’s sandcastle, though, this fort was built with the sole intent to serve as a party-house (not a living space). The bottom floor is simply a large open space, the second is a decent kitchen, the next few are storage space, and the last few are reserved as a place for hard-core partiers to crash after a long night of dancing. Impressive, if I do say so myself, and the judges agree, which is why this pillow now gets to live with chaotine!
Dominating the center of the stage (and most of the right side, for that matter) is the largest fort most people have ever laid eyes on, even by dragon standards, as built by A SEAWYRM, A NILIA, A MISFIT, A DARK MYST, A CRIMSON FLARE, A REGULAR PYGMY, AND A DAYDREAM EGGY FROM THE WIDE EXPANSES OF LAND BELONGING TO CHAOTINE! More than anything else, this fort resembles a lunar base, with a large central dome connecting to six smaller ones by way of collapsible tunnels. As with the pillow’s fort, this one was constructed using traditional materials: cardboard boxes, blankets, string, and clothespins. This is mostly because it was thrown together at the last minute, after weeks of arguing over a design. Each pygmy had wanted something else: a different shape, a different color, etc. Eventually, the daydream stepped up and proposed a collection of smaller forts connected to form one large fort. The plan was implemented overnight, resulting in an enormous blanket fort success (and a few confused dragons that got up in the morning wondering where their bed-coverings had gone). Now, each eggy clutches a ticket to a different part of DC: the seawyrm to Kottdjur’s beaches, the nilia to RainbowChris’ flight school, the misfit to Raikielia’s casino, the dark myst to ckcot’s waterpark, the crimson flare to DangerousLeaf’s dinosaur research labs, the regular pygmy to klinneah’s desert retreat, and the daydream Alrak’s mountaintop!
Well past the centerline and the monster of a blanket fort is what looks like the child of a Rube Goldberg machine and a pile of junk, created by A BRONZE TINSEL, AN ICE, AND A TURPENTINE EGGY FROM THE SCRAP METAL DUMP OF CATLOVER2388! A project that started with an old mattress, a pile of tires, and an old skylight, this fort is infuriatingly difficult to comprehend and appears as if it could topple any second. From a thin base, the fort builds up in an upside-down pyramid shape until it reaches the width of the mattress. A few layers of tires later, the fort shoots out horizontally, forming a pair of suspended tunnels (which aren’t even opposite each other) held up by brooms and copious amounts of duck tape. At the end of one of these tunnels is a grotesquely mutilated slide, which disappears into a seemingly random heap of old down comforters. To make matters worse, this structure is surrounded by a confusing lattice of welded pieces of metal and string, all part of the pulley system that supposedly opens doors and windows (though we suspect it’s used to hold the building up). Perhaps the only reason that this chaotic ‘fort’ has continuously been voted highest by the judges is because it somehow manages to stay standing against all odds. Even if it falls now, the three eggies still have some nice vacation spots to lounge in: the bronze is off to live with Voardrem, the ice with seacatsmew, and the turpentine with Anarya-Ameana!
Now the lights are lowering, and a number of bright spotlights follow the well-dressed judges as they move among the contestants. Soon we will know who won. Soon, very soon…
Hmm...it's past 7:00 EST...I'll wait!
May I please be added?
My last win was on May 7th. It's been at least 10 days, I'm sure!
A dungeon? Mind you, I guess every good castle needs one!
Another lovely story, Stealthy!
Winner has been PM'd!
Have sent PM to winner
A pillow fort, wow reminds me of when I was a kid making forts in the living room out of blankets and pillows lol
