Final Fantasy

Recommended Posts

Final Fantasy 8 is my favourite, and Final Fantasy 6 is not far behind. It's an awesome series and I have really enjoyed all of the ones I have played.

I was just wondering how many people here enjoy the final fantasy series. If so which one is your favorite?

I wikipedia'd it (I'll admit it) and Raine did die in childbirth (you were right Nix). Laguna had sent Ellone back fully intending to follow soon after.

Sure, he might not have known what happened, but don't you think 17 years is kinda a long time to wait before finding out what happened? I personally would have got on the damn phone after a week or two.

How in the world did Ellone get back? Was she seriously alone? Were Kiros and/or Ward escorting her? Why wouldn't they bring back baby boy if he was there? Had the town already sent him off to the orphanage? /too many questions

I totally agree that Laguna's an idiot, borderline lovable or facepalm-worthy, and that he totally should have been "WAT Raine had our baby?". I should probably look up the dialogue when Squall meets him in Esther to get a better picture of who knew what when before continuing, so feel free to ignore this rambly. |D

Dialogue in Esther goes something like this:

Laguna: Blah blah blah anything but Raine because if you ask me about that I specifically say I don't wanna talk about that right now and to ask at any other time blah blah blah spiffy history of Esther wow we rock hey you want to do random mission for us save the world blah blah courage love brotherhood blah I'm a censorkip.gif**!

Squall: ..... (wow, this guy's as retarded as he is in the dreams. But everyone else is onboard with his nonsense, so what the hell.) Whatever. Kinda. Except I'll agree to your innane proposals.

Ward: .... (Laguna, you're a putz.)

Kiros: Laguna, you're a putz. It's a great thing that boy in front of you took after his mother and (subtle subtle like a brick to the face) not you.

Basic paraphrasing, because it's late as heck. biggrin.gif

Edit: .... seriously? A word that starts with 'r' and stands for someone who's mentally a bit slow on the pick-up is worthy of a censor kipz? (slinks away from the PC Nazi kip)

Yeah I remember thinking that was a bit weird when I was playing, but I suppose it's slightly better than Laguna going: Hi, I'm your father. Now go save the world.

Oof.

If you have a PS3, I'd say just download the thing for $10 from the PSN. sad.gif

Otherwise... urgh. It's rather tough to get a copy for a reasonable price these days - unless, of course, you're playing it on your computer - then you can get it for $20-30. tongue.gif

'cause you know what would've happened then:

Squall: (internal monologue about being abandoned as a child, he knew all along, I was alone, blah blah blah angst-fest x over 9000 head explodes from uberwangst)

Laguna: (pokes dead body with stick) Gee, think it was something I said?

Ultimecia: TIME KOMPRESSION!

Game over, disc 3. You fail. xd.png

So we agreed that its down to Laguna's crappy parenting skills that lead to Squall being such an emo?

That said Squall is still my favourite FF character *huggles*

More like lack of any parents at all and the loss of Sis at such an early age, coupled with pressure to become more or less a hired thug and lack of support of just about any kind.

AND THEN add Seifer constantly kicking his ass and having his cronies worship the ground he walks on, and yes, Squall is messed the hell up.

HEY FORTUNE I HEARD FF13-2 WAS COMING OUT THIS YEAR.

Oh come now. Squall's just your stereotypical classic example of Boarderline personality disorder. smile.gif He's not really emo... just moody and grumpy and angry in a whiny-teenager-my-life-sucketh-so-you-get-punched-in-the-face kind of way. tongue.gif

Dissidia... you know, I'd forgotten that exists, between KH:BBS and replaying FF:TA now that I've replaced the circuit card in my GBA SP. wink.gif While I hated the fact that I did have to start a new FF:TA game (shakes fist errantly at random guy on the last ship she was stationed on who swapped FF1 and FF2 for a crack at FF:TA... and then we forgot to swap back before I left the boat), it's been fun.

I'm lovin' me the Ninja/Fighter who just mastered double-sword. Mwahahahaha. Missions are so easy after you get that done. Especially if that's your 'combat-main-stay' character and you rotate everyone else through to keep the enemy levels relatively low. xd.png When he's level 20 and everyone else is level 12, life is sooooo good.

(now just gotta get Marche up to level 20 for that eventual battle with Barbus I've got to face one of these years - I know that's waiting for me the second I walk into town. Booooo.)

Edit: Clarifications. Because it's late, I'm trying to reset for mid shift this week, and my brain's still humming the battle music from the last area I freed in FF:TA. tongue.gif

Dun get the story at all yet, but the battle is insane xd.png

Blar, should've mentioned this earlier:

Don't focus too much on the story. Your head will explode. There's really not much to it. smile.gif Just don't expect anything epic, have fun kicking the ever-livid-SNOT out of everyone you want with your favorite characters (like I've spent a gawdawful stupid number of hours kicking the crud out of Cloud and Sephiroth with Squall, just because when it comes to quick breaks he's a cheap whor... I mean just because I can. tongue.gif ) and enjoy it for what it is - a pretty decent quality fighting game. smile.gif

Edit: Because I can't finish a thought tonight without editing. laugh.gif

Got it xd.png I think I already had a head explosion trying to figure it out... Eh, whatever. I just like being Sephy and kicking the snot out of everyone else in arcade mode tongue.gif Kefka annoys me >_> Kicking Cloud's butt is far to easy.... Squall is more of a challange xd.png

I got this game for one reason - I saw it at best buy and thought OHHHH FINAL FANTASY GAME WITH CLOUD AND SEPHY IN IT : D (simpleminded xd.png)

And now I find playing as Sephritoh is something I could do all day >: D Darn my PSP for running out of power.

OH, and I've been having an issue with my PSP.... Every few seconds the screen that says *do you want to quit the game YES/NO* pops up, and that SUCKS if I'm in the middle of a Dissidia battle. and no i'm not pressing the button. HALP.

I'm I the only excited about the news of a FF13-2?

The gameplay mechanics of 13 didn't excite me at all. And the linearity had me dismiss it entirely as a FF game. (needless to say, I haven't really enjoyed any FF title since X... and that was considered 'so-so' by me. Except for Dissidia (not really a FF in my eyes, but a good fighting game!) and Crisis Core (just because of Zack, because Zack, Reno and Cait Sith were the only aspects of FF7 I truly enjoyed during my initial playthroughs of that game).)

So... yeah. I haven't really loved Final Fantasy since IX, and can't bring myself to care about 13-2. unsure.gif When I think about Final Fantasy (insert number)-2, my brain said X-2 and then summarily throws up down my spinal column.

I loved FF13, it was so freaking pretty. Sure it was a little linear and there were a few places I'd like to be able to revisit, but if you think about it that would go against the plot a little.

They are supposed to be on the run. If they could freely return to any of the places on Cocoon it wouldn't feel right.

Pulse was beautiful though.

True, it would go against the plot a little. But at least there should be an option. Covert sneaking or what not. I don't mind not being able to to back a LITTLE (like in FF8, where you get only two real shots to run around in G-Garden, and only one of those for some fun battle), but the vast majority of the game was 'run down the corridor from beautiful FMV A to FMV B. Yay, FMV.' And that makes me sad.

Plus the lack of exploration also made me go 'dude, and I thought 7 was 'meh'' when I played it through my friends' consoles (as I won't waste my own money). Part of the joy of Final Fantasy, to me, is the ability to freely go where I want, to explore and enjoy. I should be able to not only enter towns (of which there are none) and go to shops even if under a guise (of which there are none), but meander aimlessly and chat to NPCs and generally be a dingbat.

Yeah, you can use the 'they're supposed to be on the run' excuse, but that doesn't stop the party in Arc the Lad. Or Xenosaga. Why couldn't they have had any sort of option for costume or disguise? Like in Arc the Lad 2, you sneak around an enemy compound wearing a guard disguise. If you talk to too many people too early, you can actually blow your cover and then have a heck of a time making it through that base. smile.gif Or in FF7, where you can either storm the front gate and fight forever or sneak your way up a fire escape path to reach your inevitable destination to find Pres. Shinra dead as a doornail. There SHOULD have been the option. Like sneak in wearing a disguise, and if you chat to too many NPCs you blow your cover and are either a) captured (game over) or b ) get to fight your way back out of town and back onto the road. It would have made the game more open, versatile and enjoyable rather than making it feel like a beautiful Super Mario Brothers game with angst instead of mushrooms.

The modern Final Fantasies don't seem to play to the Final Fantasy crowd anymore - they play more like Halo. And I personally find it sad that Fable has more open world exploration than Final Fantasy these days. Hence why, I hate to say, the announcement of 'NEW FINAL FANTASY BLAAAAAA' makes me go "Wow, that franchise isn't dead yet? Why don't they just kill it with XIV, leave us with fond memories of our favorites, and get back to Kingdom Hearts and/or quality games like they used to make (anyone remember Parasite Eve)?"

Blah. Long, controversial rant. Sorry. I know people enjoy it, and good for you! Enjoy it! Like people enjoy FF7, which I don't. Good for you! Continue to enjoy it (provided it's not just based off of nostalgia, in which case I always say 'play it again and see if you keep those feelings of wonder' - most've the people I challenge with that come back going 'dude, what was I thinking?' - most, but not all). So if you like it, awesome. Just... not all of us are enthralled with everything Square makes that we get huge eyes and all excited every time something new is announced.

So... I may seem incredibly sour about XIII, but it's just because I miss what Final Fantasy used to be, and see things focusing more on graphics than making the wonderfully fun games they used to. In my opinion, anyway.

Because we haven't had the awesomeness of FF2 in a LOOOOOONG time. Or FF8. Or FF6. Or FF:Tactics (though Tactics Advance is pretty close to it in sheer coolness!). I miss those games with their open feel, even though staring at sprites is jarring after today's marvelous, life-like graphics.

And.... I guess the Negative-Nancy attitude was brought on by multiple posts of just 'Squee 13-2 squee won't everyone squee with me?' I wanna talk about games and plots and characters and why we like/dislike them and what their motives/problems/funny quirks are, not 'squee stuff squee' for a page or more. Not if everyone will squee over the proposition of 13-2 coming soon. The answer is no. We will not all Squee. Because some of us genuinely don't like the game. Granted my dislike is that it doesn't play at all like a Final Fantasy and that's what I wanted (if it would've been marketed as a 'Fantasy Adventure Game from Square Enix called "Escape from Cocoon" or something instead of as a 'Final Fantasy RPG', I likely would've played and been HAPPY) and not the overall plot or characters. I'm just not going to Squee, because they're not releasing Final Fantasy games anymore. They're releasing FMVs with tiny bits of computer-controlled, limited battle between them.

If I wanted to watch a Square Enix movie, I'd pop FF7:AC or Spirits Within into my BluRay player, thank you very much.

Edit: Completing thoughts. And getting the cool.gif out of my post. tongue.gif

I suppose I didn't come across very well there as I wasn't trying to say 'This is a new Final Fantasy, you MUST all squee with me' but 'does anyone else care?'

This was so that I could hopefully find someone to discuss theories and speculations with without just rambling on about something nobody else cared about.

For example, Lightning is returning as the main character, but are any other party members coming back? Will we see Snow married? A grown up Hope? It will be a little hard for Fang and Vanille to return, what with them being the crystal support for Cocoon and what not (not that I care about Vanille, I found her annoying), so will they be replaced with new characters?

People have drawn comparisons between Lightning and Cloud, and as suggested in the trailer I linked, is that new guy a new Sephiroth? Is he Lightning's love interest? O.o Lightning has new gear, she must have been promoted, but what to?

Is everyone still living on Cocoon or have people decided to make the plunge to Pulse? Will there be Chocobo riding? Will there be sheep?

I know none of this will be answered for a very long time, but I just like to throw thoughts around. It's more fun if there are two of you.

As for the linearity in 13, I guess I just saw it in a different light to you. I'm an avid hoarder and I like to collect every damn treasure I can find, even if it means back tracking through half the game for a single potion. I also hate finding out there is someone I should have spoken to or something I should have done earlier in order to unlock something, especially if the chance to do that has now passed.

In 13 going back is impossible, so due to my OCDness I searched every freaking nook and cranny in every area before pushing on. It made me take my time and really look around the area, possibly seeing things I would not have noticed if I had just raced through.

There were only two things that I actually disliked about 13, the first being Barthandelus. I was really enjoying that first fight with him right up until he cast Doom. Every fight after that was met with a certain sense of fear as I knew it would take me a few tries to get past him (this may or may not be a good thing, depending on how you look at it).

The second was timing the battles. Sometimes I just want to mess about and see what spells/skills will work and fudging about until I can build up the gauge enough to launch them into the air (my favourite skill). I should not be penalised for having fun.

I still haven't Finished Final Fantasy 12.... I feel so... a word that I can't think of.

I even went out and bought a second copy since my cat broke the first one. (Don't ask how he did that, my Aladdin is evil, pure and simple) and I still haven't played.

I have over 80+ hours on it as well. *wilts*

I guess I've been spending all my time playing DC now, instead of FF12.

EDIT due to spelling fail.
