Dear Journal,

I have long considered beginning a memoir, but the business of overseeing the Eyrie has left me little time for literary pursuits. With the flood of new immigrants slowing, however, I can now devote some time to you.

Perhaps I should begin by describing our Eyrie. Our caverns are spacious and dry, and look out over a valley in the mountains. There is a shining lake in the valley that serves as our water source, and the home of the Rainbow Serpent and his apprentice Muirin. In the center of the lake is an island, and on that island stands a black spire, the home of the sorceress who guards the valley.

The eastern cave system has the finest caves, but does not extend very far. There dwell the original founders of our community - Aeoliant and Tehuano, swiftest of fliers and scouts; Tian Mu and Agnimukha, our finest warriors, wielders of deadly lightning and incandescent flame; Draighean and Fiontan, our gentle healers and herbalists; Glaukopis and Smaragdos, our defenders, who guard the Eyrie against dangers natural and unnatural; and Apio and Tatsuya Kiseki, who with their multiple heads and keen senses are our best hunters. They have taken in apprentices who chose the path of eternal youth rather than produce offspring, and those dragonets dwell with them in the eastern caverns as well.

This island is the home of the sorceress, but also of the dragons of Dawn and Dusk. The Dusk dragons seem made of smoke and shadows, and the sorceress chooses one from each generation to be her steed. The Dawn dragons seem their opposites, gleaming bright gold as the morning sun - but from the number of eggs their pairings produce, it seems perhaps opposites do attract.

The sorceress' tower itself is guarded by five strange dragons, three adults and two eternal dragonets. Their wings are red as blood, their bodies deathly white or dark as midnight, and those who have approached them say that their breath does not steam even in the coldest air.

The dragons of Summer and Winter roam the meadows around the lake. Even in the darkest and longest winter nights, the Winter drakes glow with a silvery radiance that sustains the vines and flowers of their Summer mates.

In the western caverns - a larger complex than the eastern caves, although the caves themselves are smaller - dwell the newer arrivals to the Eyrie. Many are bright-scaled gold or silver dragons, and they can be rather protective of their "bloodlines" - they do not consider themselves lifemated until a gleaming metallic egg has been produced. This produces a large population of adult dragons without lifemates: some of the children of the Dawn lineage, in particular, travel to those caves to seek a mate.

On the forested slopes of the valley live several pairs of dragons whose scales bear the bright colors of fire and autumn leaves. They seem to like the trees, preferring shallow caves with easy access to the forests. Higher on the slopes live a few winter-born dragons, with scales gleaming blue and white as the high glaciers.

An interesting development of late is the influx of those who call themselves the Constellation. Bright-eyed and dark-scaled, all are youngsters who have chosen eternal youth, and dedicated themselves to the gaining of knowledge. Two have set themselves up as lore-keepers, gathering and recording information about the Eyrie and the surrounding lands, but the others work primarily at studying the sky and stars. They have set up an "observatory" on the highest peak in the range, and spend most of their time there: they say the air is clearest up high.

Last, I suppose, I should mention Wodanstag and Twelfth Night. Their eggs appeared mysteriously in my cave nearly a month ago. They are perhaps the most pleasant and unfailingly kind dragons I have ever known. Now they roam the valley apparently at random, helping those in need and brightening the day whenever they appear.

Well, anyway, time to be going. Two new dragonets have come in asking to join the Constellation, and want to know where they can sleep tonight; the little orange male dragonet who joined us yesterday is trying to spit lightning, and is impatient to move to the western caves; the gold and skywing baby dragonets are chasing each other around my library; and it looks like I'll have a second skywing dragonet to deal with soon. It really is very frustrating that they hatch with wings.

Journal Entry No. 12:

My owner is crazed, yeah seriously. In case you're wondering... we're two dragon

heads... forced into one body. We just hatched... there was no space in the egg...

I am the darker part... and I am the lighter part... as you can see... we will form...

a solid color... when we grow wings... and it'll be me. No, it will be me. Stop being so naive, I am much older. I am much stronger. I am much faster. I am

much smarter.

Heh. Stardust was a bit mad his entry for yesterday wasn't posted, so it's a double-post today.

January 22nd, 2009:

NovaStardust:

Well, Cassie was a bit excited about how things went at work, but she when she got to the cave, she checked up on us. Fefnir and Sage Harpuia gendered, with Fefnir a male and Sage Harpuia a female. Not much else was going on.

January 23rd, 2009:

NovaStardust:

Well, more hatchings and genderings happened today. Chronos Force, the little white, gendered Male, which gives little Starlight Nightwing a playmate. Also, the Winter Egg hatched as well, and Cassie gave the hatchling the name "Icy Cube". She picked up another Black Egg as well, and both the Guardian and one of the Black Eggs have huge holes in 'em, so we'll soon have another Guardian and likely another Black Dragon, tho I don't know if Cassie will keep the Black yet.

23rd of the first month of the year 2009.

I, Docilious, have felt a disturbance within my keeper's mind. She is troubled with Draco knows what. Though she has not yet taken on me or my cohorts. I doubt she could ever hurt others out of anger. But I fear for the young hatchlings. I can smell maturity upon them. They need all her attention once their wings sprout. I only hope that storm within her eyes dies down when the event occurs.

Now, if I could only find where that damn Bistle hid my staff...

Dear journal:

Not much has been happening as of late. We hunt, eat, sleep and mate, much as we have always done. There have been no fights of any sort. The only thing is that the water hatchling keeps getting sick. I don't think it's anything to worry about however. Peppermint Pride has been quiet lately. The way he's been creeping around, I suspect that he's planning something. I shall have to keep my eye on him...

Stardust got a bit mad again for us not posting last night's entry, but what I came home with just a few mins ago perked him up a lot... tongue.gif

January 24th, 2009:

NovaStardust:

Well, Cassie had a pretty excellent day at work, and she came home to find out she had a new Guardian hatchling. She's going to wait to see if it genders male or female before naming it, since she has two different names picked out. She also picked up an emergency Mint Egg and is having one of her friends help her to hatch it. We're all hoping it pulls through, because, once it hatches, Cassie is going to send the baby to the AP for someone else to take care of. Also, the first of the trio of Black Eggs hatched, and it was a non-Alt that Cassie named "Spectral's Deceit".

January 25th, 2009:

NovaStardust:

Well, today's not been too exciting... At least that is until Cassie went to the AP with Teeny and JetFire. JetFire came back in a hurry, because Cassie had just grabbed something extremely precious and special indeed. We all gathered near the front of the cave to see what Cassie was bringing back, and in her arms, she had cradled a very shiny golden egg. We all knew that this egg was that of a Gold Dragon, and it was very rare indeed. This was also Cassie's first rare Egg catch, so she was going to make very sure that this egg wasn't killed off. She put it with the other eggs and had Vent and Aile keep watch over it especially when she was gone during the daytime. Still, Cassie says that the eggs that this one will be producing will help her to get the Silvers and other Dragon eggs (and dinosaur eggs) that she's been wanting. She also has a pretty good name for the hatchling once it does hatch, but I can't give it out yet.

Oh, and she also bred Prometheus and Pandora and got a single Split egg. I've heard her talking with another tamer who's helping her with the Mint that if it genders female, she'll likely send it to her. It's likely going to be a thank you gift for helping out with the Mint.

Well, Cassie's letting us know now that she might not be around for a few days due to an ice storm making the trails impassable, but she did come to check up on us. The Mint had hatched, so Cassie took the baby and sent it to the AP. On other notes, the other two hatchlings had gendered. Spectral, the little Black, gendered male, and the unnamed Guardian had gendered female, which Cassie gave the name "Guardian Pearl" to. Also, Icy Cube gendered female, so Cassie froze both her and Pearl. The last Black Egg has a huge hole in it, and Cassie brought in a Fire Egg. She's likely going to put all the eggs and Spectral in so that they can hatch out soon.

The chronicles of Mazer Maddigan. Yeah.

Dear Diary,

It's difficult to write when you can't see, so I'm using magic and hoping the le tters form and space correctly. Please forgi ve my errrrrors.

I think I should write about my accident. I need to get it out. Here goes:

Quark and I were playing. We wren't doing any harm, we just got lost. We ended up in a Vine-filled cave. One of them took us underground and tried to lead us home, but...

An Earth lived in the tunnel. He was furious, so he decided on a test. He said one of us would have to answer three questions and then we could pass. Being the smart one, I offered, but the arrogant Vine pushed me away. What followed was straight from Indigo's (our trainer) moving pictures.

"What's your name?"

"Levik."

"Why are you here?"

"Escorting hatchlings home, am I."

"What is the human capital of Assyria?"

Nineveh! I thought, but Levik wasn't smart as me. He said "Ahh...Syri?"

The Green roared and thumped his tail. Levik and Quark were smart enough to run, but I stayed. I wanted to ask for a second chance. Then I was buried in rocks.

Next thing I knew I was back in the cave. I couldn't see anything but orange.

I can't write anymore a bout my history. I'll write more later.

Dear Journal:

Bored. Bored. Bored, bored, bored. Nothing to do. What with the blacks being in a bad mood, due to the cold weather that is stopping them from going out and hunting, I'm pretty sure that a prank won't go down very well. In fact, they'd probably try to kill me.

Strange thing is, we keep finding big piles of food just inside the cave entrance. Lots of meat and plants. Don't know where it comes from though.

Must go. Karach is calling me.

Here's the journal I gave my hatchling.

Dear Journal,

Can you believe that my owner thought I was a male right after I was born?! And she still gave me a girl's name. I guess that was lucky... She doesn't pay enough attention to me or the other orphans. I mean, she knows who our parents are, but she's mean to me. She says, "You'd better grow up! I don't want a dead hatchling! I want a nice, live dragon!" She's so angry and cruel. I hate her.

Dear Journal,

The tender has decided that I am to be reserved for a silver mate. She says I should feel honored that I am being paired with a metallic and that all I have to do is be patient. It's hard to be patient when all those around me are paired up with permanent mates and I am still alone. Here is to hoping that the new little silver genders out female so that my long feelings of being lonely will be gone for good.

Uff. Boring day.

The two new hosts are boring. The red thing is already ill (told Vik to choose an orange egg, but no, no, let's keep the warm one. Uff) and the Ice Egg Queen (or King, but I bet it's a girl. Girls are annoying) is ill too. How I want to play football with that stupid egg. Next time I want a black one.

Viktor is in his Bad Scale Days. "Too many screaming babies in the cave" and he left to hide in his oh-so-darling lake. This means 3 females in the cave, chatting all the time, and no funny things to do for Alex and me. Uff.

Alex said Rose is cute. Please, Random God of Dragons, not a sugary lover in my cave.

At least, not for Rose.

Maybe for Mum Ely and Rav, so they would stop looking after us all day.

Alex keeps teasing me for maturing later, but Rose grew up before him so he's a loser too. Ha!

Real Mum Star passed yesterday, to see me. Was happy to find me grown up.

Really bad day. The scroll just bit me.

"Rani, where did you take that paper hatchling?"

Paper hatchling?

Oh, sorry!

After a long overdue (and finally me getting my power back on), the Dragon Diaries return! Stardust showed me what had been happening since the last time I checked on them:

January 27th, 2009:

NovaStardust:

It's a bit lonely without our Dragon Handler here, but just before she disappeared, she brought in a Guardian Egg. She also introduced us to her friend who would be watching over us while she was away. It was a bit after that that she disappeared.

January 28th, 2009:

NovaStardust:

Cassie was briefly able to visit us with some help from Glacier. Spectral, our Black Male, had grown up, and the Split and shiny eggs had hatched. Cassie told us that the Shiny hatchling was a Gold Dragon. She gave the name "BlackChaos's Courage" to it.

January 29th, 2009:

NovaStardust:

After a long wait, Cassie was finally back! She found out that her friend had put both the Fire and Guardian Eggs in another hatchery since they were running out of time to hatch. It was all good to see Cassie back after so long, and I hope that we don't see another ice storm for a long while.

January 30th

Dawn-of-December

Transcribing telepath words and images to paper is quite a strange thing, and I feel as though I am being likened to the very humans who have flexible hands to write with and tongues with which to speak aloud. I consider most humans to have weak, puny hands and tongues that flap like fish, but not the dragon tenders such as my lady. For one human to have raised many dragons and earned their complete respect and devotion is a very special thing indeed.

I am the first silver of our cave, and while my lady does not like to play favourites, she has a very big soft spot for me. My mate is the alpha male of the cave, a gentle yet firm white named Lord Icecloud. His lifemate is a storm named Lady Vortex, but as she was found to be unable to produce offspring, Icecloud formally chose me to bear the next leaders of the cave. Vortex did not like this at all but could not necessarily argue, and we very rarely see her, for she is always flying and brooding.

Though I am yet very young, I have two grown children. Star-of-Wonder looks just like his father, and our daughter Dawn-of-Hope takes after myself. Our very first egg perished before it could ever hatch. While Star has yet to take a mate, Dawn-of-Hope has taken one of the older males of the cave, a skywing called Winter Skyfrost, as her lifemate, and together they have two young children, one of which is a silver. We are hoping this tiny, helpless silver is male.

I sense a growing fury from Lady Vortex, which I can assume is righteous jealousy. The cave members no longer have her to listen to and they rever me, not only as the first rare dragoness to be born here, but as the alpha female. Even our chief protectors and hunters, mage Sunstrider Dream, guardian Light Seeker and warrior Midnight Sunbeam, are much larger than myself and quite stronger, but they bow before me.

However, I fear that Vortex's wrath will soon descend upon me at last, and it may endanger the lives of all who live in this cave.

Wow, who could imagine this. Good, old Viktor and Mummy Ely. Greatest pairing ever.

Yes, Viktor has just become a daddy (four Mint eggs. What a shame for his Water pride). Ely says it's too eary for calling him so, since eggs are supposed to hatch in a week, but...well, Rani and me couldn't resist. He becomes...well, he can't blush, but I swear he becomes bluer (Rose says "bluer" isn't a word. Who cares) every time he hears this name.

I wonder...who proposed to whom? Ely just smiles, while Vik threats to drown the prat who brings up the subject, so I suppose we'll never know.

Rose is excited for the new little dragon (we could keep only one egg), but also for new hatchlings. They're well now: the red one is a male and BITES. And calls Rani "mummy".

I'd like to write more, but paper hatchling isn't willing to co-operate.

Alex the Great.

***

Alex is just jealous.

And you, red thing, stop stalking me.

Rani the even greater.

PS: I was right. Ice thing is a girl.

***

OK, Death Note,

I'm definitely doing it. Two giggling idiots desperately need some extra hits on their empty head.

Or maybe I go, steal a pink or purple egg and raise a nice, good and bossy little female. Yes, we need another girl in this cave.

EDIT: Rav told me the Winter baby gendered female. Very good.

Viktor the Giant

***

I still can't believe it. An egg. An egg all mine.

How I want to see my little baby's face. Seven days are so long, and eggs are so delicate...but all the cave is helping me to cure it. Even Viktor...and I swear I saw him smile. Of course his fame of hatchlings hater is too important for him, so he pretends he's not happy at all.

I hope it's a female, since I'm planning to find a mate for the two, and now three, little devils (I bet Alex has a crush on Rose, but she definitely prefers Rani. Obviously she won't admit it...she's so proud she could be Viktor's sister), but Vik declares he will never, ever give his daughter to the two biggest idiots in the whole dragon kingdom. I wish he was a bit more diplomatic with youngsters, they're not so bad.

Winter egg has gifted us the cutest female I've ever seen. She tried to go hunting with Rav but she's still too weak.

Not much happened yesterday, but Stardust let me know what happened as well:

January 30th, 2009:

NovaStardust:

Well, Cassie came to check up on us after a semi-exciting day at work, and boy was she surprised! Both the Guardian and Red Eggs have hatched. She's going to wait to see what they gender, because she's looking for a Male Red Dragon this time around. She might also keep the Guardian if it genders Male.

January 31st, 2009:

NovaStardust:

Well, Cassie's been having a great day off, and to top it off, two more surprises awaited her when she visited our cave. First off, Prometheus and Pandora's hatchling gendered male, which was what Cassie was looking for, so she named the hatchling "Double Trouble Fury". Also, BlackChaos's Courage grew up, but Cassie is going to wait til her friend gets online so that she can breed and trade for the Silver that she's been waiting for.

Journal:

The cave just keeps on getting more crowded. Right now, there are five eggs and four hatchlings just taking up space. I should probably impose a ban on breeding one of these days. I'm fairly glad that two of the hatchlings are male, however. The females still out number us slightly, but things are going to change. I can just feel it.

Hei.

Dear Journal:

The weather has turned extremely cold. Finse told me that there might be snow coming. We should be able to get through it however. We have enough food to last us for a while yet. The hatchlings are all growing well, and we have five new eggs to look after. I overheard Hei mention something about a breeding ban, but I don't think he'll go through with it. He's just grumpy because Catch The Myth bit one of his vines while he was sleeping.

Dear Journal,

Alright what gives? I finally decided to crack out of that cramped little pink shell and then Aang starts yelling at me to grow up. Well at least I didn't have to endure the gender-screams that Klorel and Ketesh got. Klorel is a water dragon and Ketesh is a Skywing. If you hadn't guessed, I'm pink. I was female from the start of all this. I've laid an egg with Daragron, that little mint-colored lizard of a dragon. He's pretty nice as well.

Anyhow, I quite like this small, cozy cave, but it's quickly becoming crowded, what with all these hatchlings running around my feet and yanking on my wings. I love them but they're rowdy. The adults rarely stick around, except for Ishta, but when they do call a gathering, it is rather tight fitting. Luckily Ketesh hangs out by the ceiling and Klorel goes out to his lake most of the time, but we still need a bigger cave. And more stay-at-home dragons. All these eggs and hatchlings are too much for one dragon.

Journal Entry 1

It was suggested to me by the strangeling that something of this nature would be intriguing to me. I share my thoughts with Rhi'hanan frequently and question rather this would be any different... We shall see.

The strangeling has been acting particularly odd as of late. She seems to be a mix of pleased and discontented at the same time. I can see why she would be pleased; the stones finally succeeded in having an egg together. I am at a loss for her discontentment, however.

My hatchlings have noticed it as well. The pair are usually playing or playfighting, either trying to best each other in mock battle or with words, but not recently. Rhi'hanan is concerned, seeing them go so still whenever the strangeling nears.

The healer whites that had been in the clan for time out of mind recently chose to leave for the wilds. They claimed they did not belong with the strangeling and that others would come who did.

One of the white eggs that was found has already grown. He seems to be a good dragon; sure of what he does and why. He found two others, both of which have hatched. One, another male, chose to remain a hatchling and play for all of time. The female will grow into Brea'nu's mate. She was glad to finally be of age to choose her name; Ki'kana

Texas Tornado has just come with the message that Wind'Rider has seen the strangeling approaching. He also mentioned that Cloud'Twister saw Sven'la 'playing' with his rocks near Innuit's pond. I have told Sven'la several times to be careful of the hatchling that dwells in the streams there. It seems he needs a reminder before the strangeling arrives for her visit.

Am seriously thinking of imposing a breeding ban now. If everyone keeps breeding like this, we'll end up having to move. And I'll bet that we won't be able to find any place else.

Hei.

Dear Diary:

That hypocrite of a vine. He's going round talking about imposing a ban on breeding when he himself has just bred. Calls himself the leader just because he matured about an hour before me. Not that anyone really listens to him, however.

Skerry.

Dear Journal:

I'm not entirely sure what is going on at the moment. One moment everything is peaceful, the next, chaos. All I've managed to gather is that Hei is a hypocrite (whatever that is). Seems to have come about because he was talking about a breeding break, and then went ahead and mated with Haforn. Next minute, Skerry was accusing him of going back on his word. Will probably write more once everyone has calmed down. The noise is terrible at the moment!

Dear Diary:

That vine has gone and upset the balance again. And what was it about this time? The fact that there are now two more males than females. Okay, so the thirty third male is still a hatchling, but he still counts. Hei keeps forgetting his place. I'm the leader, not him!

We really don't need any more disturbances. Not when there are five eggs to look after. I would throw him out of the cave, but...let's just say that he can make sense at times. If, however, he insists on causing trouble, then I shall have no choice but to order him to leave.

Well here's the first one:

Dear Journal, or diary, wahtever,

It seems two other eggs hatched, and the owner did it again. Yes, she, again, gave stupid names to the poor young ones. I mean what's up with naming her every dragon Marble something? She has no imagination, it's true...

Only McGreen got lucky. She was named before the Marble chaos. Well at least Sky really fits me. I got luckier then the second youngest hatchling, its name is Marble Heads... Well I'm not even going to comment that...

It seems today Flower and Blue produced an egg. We were all so happy for them. It's a green egg, just like its father. However, it became abandoned before I could say the word 'congratulations'. I think I'd rather if I would've been picked up by someone else! But still, we watch over the egg, and hopefully it's in good hands.

I hope that many of the hatchlings and eggs will turn out to be male, because there are too many females. I mean out of six gendered dragons, two of them are male. What's up with that?

Well anyways, I see some strange things happening every now and then. It seems we will welcome a hatchling and an egg soon enough. Also, it seems the first rare dragon in our scroll has hatched. Good thing too! Let's hope its a girl, though. I have plans for it.

Well that's all for now. I have to figure out what my owner is up to. So see you soon.
