Welcome back for another round of the DC Photography contest, come and show us what you've got! 

 

This time, the theme is: String

Meaning whatever you want as long as we can all agree that it's - well, string ! If you can do string theory in a photo, more power to you !

 

Submission deadline: March 20

 

Voting deadline: March 31

 

Submissions:

 

Rules:

- One entry per person.

- A photograph is defined as an image made using a camera or phone camera.

- Screenshots are not allowed.

- Picture has to be made by yourself and can't be just a reproduction of someone's work. If someone else's work is in the picture, there needs to be something extra.

- No manipulation besides basic photo adjustments (contrast, exposure, cropping, color balance, lighting, etc.).

- No text or framing in the photo. A signature/watermark is just fine, but it's preferable if you don't have "O Hai Eye Hav3 T3XT" (or something similar) present in the photo.

- When voting, please don't select your own image. This will ensure fairness.

- You are free to submit an old photo; you don't need to take a new one just for this competition.

- Winner hosts the next contest.

Actually, this place always looks like this as I saw. Most entries are submitted at either of first week or last week. Which was the reason I suggested to shorten the submission duration. Actually it was one week at very beginning.

I wasn't just meaning this thread - which isn't a game as such. All the games seem to have ground to a snail's pace. But in the past, when the deadlines were shorter, I usually never saw the thing till hours before that deadline and hadn't the time to find or take a photo. This isn't quite in the same league as Bingo, random words etc, and the whole forum seems to have slowed, with many fewer new posts of a morning - I still reckon Discord is the reason - which is a shame for ME, as I really don't like Discord..

I don't agree about at least this one, as pace of this had been slowed much before official discord was announced. I believe pace of this contest had been changed around round #127, because there was absolute no entries during whole week. I believe this one is back on normal track now, so I still think it would be better to set bit faster pace.

Yes I know - you have been asking for many threads to be speeded up for a long while, but in this particular case, I think nobody agreed with you. Not everyone wants everything to go fast in life. If a thread has long deadlines of course it will go slowly. When you set them, you can set them as long as you want. My interest lies more in the reducing number of competitors, and I think they don't come here much any more and simply don't see the threads.

I like the longer deadlines because it gives me a chance to take a picture specifically for the contest (which I unfortunately don't think I've done in a while). I agree that it feels like the forums as a whole have slowed down. I don't hang out on the DC Discords, either.

I do find it really helpful when the new host links the new contest in the previous thread. I have missed new contests (and even tiebreaker polls!) when they were just put up as a new thread and not linked in the original. Posting to the Forum Activities thread is a good idea, and not something I always remember to do when I host (I'll try to remember going forward!). Would adding a section of "hosting guidelines" with these suggestions to the main post be useful, maybe?

I know we have a group of regulars who participate, we could add a ping list to the main post for those who want to be specifically notified when a new contest goes up. Someone who doesn't participate often might want to be on the list so they can join in when a theme catches their interest.

I've also been meaning to ask, but how do we feel about repeating old themes? I think it's cool that we're at nearly 200 contests with almost no repeats, but some of those are over a decade old. I think if a theme hasn't been used within the past... I don't know, 10 or so contests, it could be used again? Sometimes I pick a theme and then feel like I have to change it because I see it was used in a contest years before I even started participating.  And some of them are themes I wish someone else would pick because I have good pictures for them. Or because I want an excuse to try something out of my comfort zone!

A ping list sounds brilliant. I'll see if I can work one out and add to the first post - and in future ones, people could ask to be added.. And I am with you - why not repeat themes.

 

I'm glad you are basically with me on the length of time - I think one a month works rather well - more often and I'd never get around to it myself. And if one a month - why cut it off half way ?

Agree that the longer deadlines are better. Sometimes I want to take a picture for a contest, but it can take awhile to have the right opportunity. I think you probably get better pictures and more participation if people have more time.

 

I see no problem with repeating past themes, either. I was going to say repeat would be okay if it hasn't been used in at least a year, but we don't really have dates to go by, so maybe as Ghost Mouse suggests make it at least 10 contests ago.

I agree, we could probably recycle some of the older themes (or use more alphabet letters!).

I don't think I have any string. Unless you count the parachute cord I've been wanting to turn into a halter for the past two years, although I'm all thumbs and probably incapable of turning it into anything useful. I prefer leaving it here, untouched and mostly unseen, so I can at least imagine I might get something done with it one day.
