add day of the week to time reference

Recommended Posts

as the title says. very simple, and a quality of life change.

with the new gemshard mechanic, we need to know what day of the week it is to know what color our gemshards will be. there should be a marker for what day of the week it is in-cave. its not much of a problem for me, personally, since i'm on the same time as cave time, but this may be very inconvenient and confusing for those in other timezones. since we have an in-cave clock, for sun/moon drakes and other time sensitive breeds, it seems logical to add a day of the week to that as well since we now have a breed that relies on what day it is for colorations. :)

I don't mind. The only issue I have with this is that lore-wise, we don't know how days of the week are named. DC doesn't take place on Earth.

that's what i was thinking... but since the mechanics do require actual days of the week, maybe they can come up with a unique, lore-related way to name the days. doesn't have to be the real life names... all that matters is what day it is in the cave, not what actual day it is. it would be really cool to see what they come up with..!

That'd be really cool! I always love getting expanding lore and information about DC's world. I agree that now that we have a breed dependent on actual days as opposed to night/day or moon cycles, days should be added in-cave the same time the moon cycles and day/night info are.

I do agree it would be helpful though! If they figure out the name thing, that would be awesome.

It does seem very weird to have a mechanism that doesn't correspond to anything in the game itself. We have an indication of the time of day for time based breeds, seasons for seasonals, moon phases for Lunar Heralds...poor gemshards are left out now lol. I support adding the days in some way, whatever that is.

Please no changing the names of the days! Not everything has to be based on lore. I'm pretty sure with the moon cycles that the Lunars depend on we don't have  a 24 hour day in the cave, either. So should we change the hours to keep up with lore, too?

I would be okay with indicating the day of the week in the cave to help people playing half a world away, but please just keep it simple.

i mean... i dont think it would be too difficult to put a fun, lore based day of the week and then (tuesday) (for example) afterwards..

Massively supporting this with the Gemshards update - I don't personally think the weekdays need to be changed at all (and honestly fear they might be confusing for non-english speaking players) but ultimately even if TJ does decide to add some lore based alternates it would be an improvement

This would be helpful for people in time zones that are quite a bit off from DC's!

I don't think we need lore-compliant names, either, honestly; numbers would work okay.  So it would look like this when you clicked on the DC clock:

Time of Day: It is night. The sun is setting.

Day: It is the seventh day of the week.

Season: Spring

I like this idea for formatting the time info, and for using numbers for the days, but in different places across the Earth, the week starts on different days. In some countries the week starts on Sunday, in others Monday, etc. so I'm not sure how DC should count the days (which should be "the first day of the week" etc) that would be the least confusing... But I do like that this idea avoids Earth vocabulary and complicated/new lore terms too.

Thank you!  I did think about the Sunday versus Monday starter thing, but I figure TJ can just pick one.  The pattern will be clear no matter what the day is called, after all!  :)  And it neatly avoids both "modern" terms and made-up terms, plus it sort of matches the tone/format of the 'time of day' display.

Since DC runs on US time, it seems likeliest that US week order would be chosen, but if it's not, I can easily adjust.  Ultimately all I and other players have to do is match the color of Gemshard to the DC phrase I need to look for, whether that's "Sunday" or "first day" or "seventh day" or "Auraxday."  :D

Simple but does the trick.    I like it.  :D

Why not just add the date next to the time?  It already uses "real world" terminology by saying the time and EDT to convey the time zone cave-time runs off of.  People could check the cave-date and then determine which day of the week it is based off that.

Well, no it doesn't. I have calendars all over the house, some from N America, some from Australia, some from Europe.

About half of them give Sunday as the first day of the week; the others give Monday.

So - no, not simple. (indeed, this very example suggests Sunday as the 7th day; I'm fine with that but my partner would be outraged !)

This seems to me to be the answer.

Time of Day: It is day. The sun is rising

Day: It is the 6th of June (or even, if you want to "suggest lore", it is the 6th day of the 6th month)

Season: Spring

One could invent invent a name (lore) that could be abbreviated just like the days in English, e.g. "It's Thuskor (Thu)" or "Today is Weddox" (Wed). But maybe I'm making thing unnecessarily complicated. 😄

I think you are ! Adding lore to vital information is a pain, to be blunt.

I like this format a lot -- what others have said about numbering being inconsistent in different places is true -- I personally don't think it's a big deal to just.. say Sunday-Saturday? like others have said, a list of seven more made-up words to remember for our days of the week is.. unnecessarily complicated and a pain, especially since it doesn't actually correspond to our days of the week any differently. like, we're not making an eight-day-week calendar, we're not changing anything about how the days of the week work, we'd just be giving new words to identical concepts. the names of the moon cycles are a justified change because they do not correspond to earth's Real Life Moon, but unless we're actually making a new calendar i don't see any reason to change the names of the days.

Yes it is, because we already have a precedent set for DC.  Look at the shards we receive. This reads, "Weekly limits reset every Sunday," making Sunday the first day of the week.   I don't see how it could be anything inconsistent with this.

We already have contemporary terminology to refer to time and date. The cave exists on a 24 hour day and 7 day week system, which another world probably wouldn't have in common with Earth. We use the terms AM and PM to refer to times of day and abbreviations like EDT to refer to time zone. The raffle page right now says the next drawing will be on Jun 30, 2021. The Market already uses the name Sunday to tell users when the shards reset.

It would be good to just have the Time Reference page say what day it is without any overcomplications.

That would be fun - but not for new non forum players

It doesn't MATTER if you don't actually know which  day of the week it is for resetting. It matters hugely if you get the wrong day for a gem.

And that could equally make Sunday the last day of the week. I have never ever thought of the day my shards reset as having anything to do with Sunday being the first day of the week. Would you see it as the first day of the week of they reset on Friday ?

Probably not, unless it was pointed out to me.   But in this case, IMHO UnicornMaiden might have explained it best:

This game is getting difficult enough without making unnecessary changes. Please, let's  just keep it simple and consistent whenever possible.

If it simply said Sunday - that's fine. It's the idea of "the first day of the week" I don't like.
