New Encyclopedia page: Unique Breeds

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I hope this suggestion hasn't come up yet, if so please let me know, thank you :)

I was thinking of an addition to the Encyclopedia page that could help us keep track of specific dragon breeds mechanics that otherwise that differ from the simple one egg = one breed = one set of adult sprites.

We have many beautiful dragons, some breeds also have multiples colors and shapes depending on so many things that for a new player it could get easly confusing unless they constantly use the Dragon Cave Wiki. DC Wiki is an extremly helping tool and I'll never thank them enought to keep all info of the game updated. However having some informations given directly from the game would give a sense of satisfaction by unlocking new things and it would allow us to have a faster and easy way to access informations without the use of external site.

The picture attached pretty much explains where I think it would be neat to see it displayed.

Immagine.png.0c8afbbff09b4acbcd5ed7aa9728a117.png

  • This Encyclopedia page would get updated similar to the main one: you get the information of the breed only once you raise the specific dragon sprite in your scroll.

  • The dragon breeds eligible to be in this page either have: (white for examples so I dont spoiler)
  1.   More than one adult final form under the same breed name (ex: Ridgewings, Bailakas)
  2.   Specific breeding mechanics to obatin a specific color (ex: Coppers)
  3.   Adult variations depending on the time of the day (ex. Fire gems, day/night glory, sunrise/sunset)
  4.   The ability to breed egg of another breed (ex: Aria and Luminas)
  5.   Their form depends on the lunar moon phase (ex: Lumina, Lunar Herald)
  6.   Alternative forms (Ex: Black, Dark Green and Undinas)
  7.   Variations that depend on the Biome (Ex: Pyralspites, Zyumorph)
  8.  a combination of the above

  • This page differ from the main Ecyclopedia one because all unique breeds are collected togheter and it is easier to scroll and read how to obtain them

  • The current individual page of each dragon doesn't tell us how to obtain each unique sprite (for example it doesn't say the color of Gemshards is randomly generated and doesn't depend on the time of breeding/catching or moon phase).

Here is the list of breeds that have unique mechanics for beeding/hatching and differ from a "regular" breed because in order to get them you have to remember a specific in game feature such as the lunar calendar, the time of the day or a specific biome. I find this summary page very useful, expecially when we have SO MANY breeds that have alternative variation, multiple adult color sets, multiple morphologies. Related to this topic I would also like to see egg descriptions being listed in the regular Ecyclopedia page once you finish unloking the breed.

I use the spoiler for new players who want to discover breeding mechanics by themselves - If I left out any breed please let me know ;)

Full support from me! It's a shame that we have an encyclopedia that doesn't tell you the really important things like breeding mechanics and so on.

I'd also like to add some other breeds:

  • Everything with a spriter's alt. Should be unlocked as soon as you find the respective SA in a lineage.
  • Solstice. The blue-winged variant needs to be present, including the breeding window for both of them.
  • Also Holly and Mistletoe for their ability to have bred offspring of either gender while the CBs can only be of one gender.
  • GoN breeding mechanic - which avatar can be bred with which combination. Also summoning?
  • Avatar breeding: Sometimes, an avatar can breed an avatar of a different kind, depending on the element of the non-avatar parent.
  • Sinomorphs breeding any random Zyumorph.
  • For Prizes and Baikalas: If you breed one pair of differently colored dragons of this breed, the offspring will always be the same color. (At least I think that's true for Baikalas?)
  • About Stripes: Stripe x Stripe breeding. You know what I mean. ;)
  • Also, the old Spinel x Spinel breeding should be mentioned. They do drop red Spinels now, don't they?
  • Nebula alts. Only visible after gendering.
  • Seaonals. 'Nuff said.
  • I'd also like to see a breeding guide for hybrids (+ geodes, the pseudo-hybrids). Either when you see one in a lineage, or when you own one, or when you have both parent breeds unlocked.
  • Undead/Zombie dragons.
  • Neglected dragons. Not exactly spelling it out.
  • Also quirky temporary sprites - like Lumina after breeding with slick/oily breeds.
  • Vampire dragons and how to make more of them.

Also, there are a little more than 6 breeds of Xenos by now, so you might want to edit their entry a little bit.

I correct the Xeno part yeah XD

Btw I agree with all your points. i also would like to see spriter alt's being included in some way since they are part of the game. I intentionally left out BSA and this includes the vampires. I generally tried to focus only on those breeds that breeding/catching affects a lot and need to be carefully remembered. There is no way I'm going to breed the right Fire Gem or Lunar Hearlds without doing some maths. I also want to not burn my poor brain trying to figure out how to get a red nebula or a green gemshard when it's just... random.

I do firmly believe the Hybrids deserve a page on their own since we'll definetly get more and more.

Same thing for Zombie and Undead.

To give the proper attention to your reply I'll analize each one and explain with we should or shouldn't update it on the first post. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Valentine Dragon: The dragons of this breed are all Females. You can collect only 2 dragon eggs from the cave, and unlimited bred ones. The Alternative Version displayed below only belongs to the Spriter XXXX

2) GoN breeding mechanic - which avatar can be bred with which combination + Undead/Zombie dragons + Neglected dragons. + Sinomorph + Vampires

Since they do require a BSA or some complicated methods in order to be obtained I think they should be distincted from the regular breeds that we can find in cave or breed ourselves. The oother breeds are confusing because they have multiple different outcomes from the same original common egg /breed. Th ones listed here such as Neglected instead, aren't hard to distinguish one another, they just have a complicated obtaining method.

I have troubles to find a way to give disclosure about avatar breeding without "spoilering" that we can have a GoN. I think that it's important to give evidence to the previous step, aka; if you have X, Y and Z you can use this BSA. Each of them would deserve a detailed description in a separate page, imo.

3) Stripes Breeding: It's a mess, it needs to get constantly updated with each new dragon relased. Ofc I would like to see it described, but for my mental sake I just resumed it a bit in my first post XD

4) Also, the old Spinel x Spinel breeding should be mentioned. They do drop red Spinels now, don't they?

Sorry you lost me here, as we were saying there is too much stuff to keep track of. Please, further explain. XD

5) Seaonals. 'Nuff said + Prized and Bailaks

Added

6) Nebula ALTS

Not sure the red and green adults are considered alternatives! yes, it's basically like alcedines, they share the hatchies sprite tho... added anyway!

7) Also quirky temporary sprites - like Lumina after breeding with slick/oily breeds.

This should be displayed in the regular homepage of Encyclopedia since we don't exactly need a guide to permanently obatin them. This includes: Lumina, Celestials, Nocturnals, Stratos, Spirit Ward.

Thank you.

If 3 additional pages are too much they could be all in a single page provided that Unique Breeds - Hybrids and Holiday Dragons sections remain properly divided.

Is there a specific reason why the page of Elements doesn't list each dragon affinity ?

Probably because it would be such a pain to maintain ?

Good edits, @Naruhina_94.

If I may add some extra suggestions:

- It's still true all CB Solstices are rosy-winged, isn't it?

- Also mention that Pumpkins belong to the pygmy breeding group despite having a huge egg. I mean, it'll be obvious if you try to breed them, but imagine a player who refused to collect pygmies wondering why there are no mates displayed on their breeding page...

- regarding stripe breeding, I'd mostly leave it as is, merely point out that stripe x stripe results in offspring of a random color.

Spinel x Spinel used to result in green Spinel offspring, as Spinels themselves have earth-element affinity. This has been changed sometime, I think. *checks* Yep, it's random now. https://dragcave.net/lineage/KM7DG and https://dragcave.net/lineage/gDTJ9. So maybe mention that quirky behavior.

Maybe an Avatar entry could be added once someone has acquired a GoN *or* an Avatar. After all, if you get, let's say, a 2nd gen Avatar of whatever, you can use it to breed all the other avatars.

Listing elemental affinity: yeah, listing it all in one place could be a pain to maintain.  It seems like it ought to be possible to automate it, though, since the dragons' individual pages do list it.  That would be a thing that someone could suggest, maybe.

---

Now, my thoughts on the listing-all-the-breeding-mechanics:

In general, I agree that the encyclopedia having more information would be nice.  I would be fine either with a page on all the unique breeding mechanics, or if a blurb on the breeding mechanics was unlocked in each individual encyclopedia page.

The encyclopedia should probably have a special page on limited-availability dragons, though; that's something which applies to several dragon breeds.  Actually, the "Help" section already has a page, https://dragcave.net/help/limits but it's currently kind of useless because it only shows GoN and Leetle Tree being limited, and mentions limits on the total (presumably including bred) number of holiday dragons.

I would suggest editing the limits help page to remove the old information, and then either putting all of the limit-related information there, or making an encyclopedia limits page with some of it (holiday CBs being limited), and cross-linking the two pages.

Now, here are some more specific observations on your proposed breed mechanics explanations:

Spoiler

Did you say Gemshards have two different adult variants?  Pretty sure it's 3.  Proposed elaboration:

Quote

Gemshard dragons come in three different colors.  Each dragon's color is randomly determined when it hatches.

For Copper: wait a minute, what happens when you breed a bred female copper to a male non-copper?  (From looking at various checkers, it seems like the egg will be the female's color.)  What happens when you breed two coppers of different colors to each other?

Pargulus, Pyralspite, Baikala, Two-Headed Lindwyrm, Zyumorph: "The adult color depends on the biome the egg was caught" doesn't cut it.  It needs some description of how bred dragons' colors are determined.  I'm pretty sure I remember bred Pargulus colors being at least somewhat random, and I'm not sure about the rest; they might simply be inherited from their parents?

Prizes: "They can only breed with their own kind"?  Well, they can only breed with other normal-size-and-shape dragons, but that's kind of a misleading statement.  How about this?

Quote

Has three different colors.  An egg's color is always inherited from its prize dragon parent.  If two prize dragons breed together, the egg may match either parent all eggs will match one parent's color.  Any particular prize x prize pair will only ever produce one color, and never the other the other.

Add to the list: avatars from GoN.  I propose the following explanation:

Quote

A Guardian of Nature cannot produce Guardian of Nature eggs.  If it breeds with a dragon that has an elemental affinity[link to https://dragcave.net/dragonopedia/elements], it may produce one of three avatars (creation, destruction, or change) based on its partner's primary affinity.  A dragon breed's primary affinity is listed at the top of its encyclopedia page.

If a Guardian of Nature breeds with a neutral, non-aligned dragon, it will only produce eggs of its partner's breed.

Guardians of Nature will refuse to reproduce with each other.

---

An Avatar, when bred, may randomly produce its partner's breed of egg, its own, or the kind of avatar which corresponds to its partner's elemental affinity.

I feel like exhaustive lists and tables aren't quite the right thing for the encyclopedia.

So for Fire Gem Dragons, it might be sufficient to say something like

Quote

The egg's color (and therefore the dragon's color) depends on which hour the egg was laid or stolen during.  All eggs from the same hour will be the same color.  The color rotates every hour in a set order.  The current variant can be checked by breeding an egg, stealing one from the biomes, or looking at the market's[link to https://dragcave.net/market] preview of the currently-available-for-purchase color of Fire Gem.

The complicated, sequential pattern of the Lunar Herald stuff is especially irritating to me, because it's hard to see the pattern in that format.  How about something like this, instead?

Quote

An egg's color depends entirely on the phases of Valkemare's two moons at the time it was laid or stolen.  A hatchling is the same color as the egg it hatches from, and keeps the color for the rest of its life.  The current moon phases can be checked on DC's time[link to https://dragcave.net/help/time] page.

Here are the expected results from each combination of the moons' phases:

lunar-herald-chart.png.4048e79c654a66b0c6308b5d2ba90afd.png

Holiday dragons with spriters' alts: I'm pretty sure the wiki has at least one holiday dragon where they don't list the alt on the spriter's request?  And the spriters' alts are mostly not relevant unless you collect lineages with them in it.  Instead of listing who owns the spriters' alts, I would instead prefer a blanket statement, something like this:

Quote

Certain limited-availability dragons (prize dragons and the various holiday dragons) have specially-colored variants that are only owned by the people who sprited them.  Their offspring do not inherit their unique colors, and are just normal dragons of that breed.

And then just leave it at that, or leave it for players to discover.

The black sweetlings should get a special mention, though:

Quote

The black alternate form was given to players who were affected by a particular bug shortly after Sweetlings were first released.  Currently, the only way to obtain a black sweetling is to be one of those players and raise a Sweetling egg whose father is also a black Sweetling.

In the past, any Sweetling egg, even from a pink father, could transform into a black Sweetling when moved to the scroll of a player who had been affected by that bug.  This has since been changed.

I really think the "only two CBs, unlimited bred ones" note could be moved to the top of each of the relevant sections.  It could be a general introduction which says something like this:

Quote

All of these dragons are available only during specific times of the year: Halloween dragons near the end of October, Holiday dragons near the end of December, and Valentine's Day dragons only near the beginning of February.  Each year, TJ09 posts announcements when these dragons become available.  These are posted in the "News" section of the Dragon Cave forum and are are linked on the sidebar of the main cave page (https://dragcave.net/).

When available, these limited-time dragons can be found in the cave and will produce large clutches of their own kind of eggs when bred.  During other times of the year, they can be bred to normal dragons, but will only produce normal eggs.

Holiday and Valentine's Day dragons are limited: for each kind of Holiday dragon, and for each kind of Valentine's Day dragon, any given user is limited to a maximum of two cave-born (picked up from the biomes and lacking parents) dragons of that kind.  There is no limit (other than how many eggs/hatchlings a user can hold at one time) on how many non-caveborn Holiday and Valentine's Day dragons a user can have, nor on how many Halloween dragons of any kind a user can have.

Holiday and Valentine's Day dragons will generally only have one gender per type.  Therefore, most Holiday and Valentine's Day eggs cannot be influenced, because their gender was already pre-determined by their type.  Exceptions are noted in the sections on individual dragon types.

And at this point, I can't think of anything else to say, and I'm a bit sick of typing and re-typing, so I'm going to trust that I proofread most of that stuff well enough, and post this now.

False: you will only ever get ONE color from a prize × prize pair. So if you bred silver/bronze and the first egg is silver, you will never get a bronze from them.

It's the same with Two-headed Lindwyrms, actually. Whatever colour the first egg between a given pair of blue and green Lindwyrm is, any future offspring will be the same colour.

Pyralspites and Zyumorphs breed as if they were 3 and 6 totally separate breeds. No fancy mechanics other than the CB colour depending on the biome.

Terraes (non-PB) appear to be laying eggs only of one blotchtype ever (you know, those blotchy markings). I had a tiny bit of testing going on with Celestial & Terrae pairs and noticed that they were always dropping the same type XD

https://dragcave.net/progeny/ZEEB9

https://dragcave.net/progeny/jSDzf

https://dragcave.net/progeny/ZMT1B (their Terrae egg from the first attempt must have died ...)

Whether that egg blotchtype is the same as what the Terrae parent hatched from, I didn't track. I dare someone else to check that :D

This isn't exactly of lots of importance for lineages and such - or *any* importance really - but since the egg's blotchtype determines the grouping in sort-by-breed, it might be of marginal interest for people who like such kind of invisible tidbits :D

Since when is that false? Do you know of any proof?

Sorry if this comes across as an attack, it's not intended to be. I'm just curious about this.

It's on the wikipedia that if you breed tinsel x tinsel you'll only ever get one color of tinsel, and if you breed shimmer-scale x shimmer-scale, you'll only ever get one color of shimmer-scale. I think if you breed for example gold tinsel x bronze shimmer-scale, though, you can get either gold tinsel or bronze shimmer-scale since they register as different breeds.

So I forgot to distinguish between Eastern and Western Prizes. Gotcha!

It's probably worth noting that the Tinsel and Shimmer-scale articles haven't had any actual content-related edits since, like, 2018. So that behavior could probably use reinvestigating. Wikis are community projects, yadda yadda yadda, living documents, etc. etc. ;)

Personally, I love canon sources, so I wouldn't mind documentation of some of these behaviors. Seems like it would mostly make more sense under the dragons' individual entries than lumping a bunch of otherwise unrelated mechanics into one page, but that's down to developer implementation.

I don't recall that, but I do recall that they would allegedly have to be "reset" to perform a fix, so formerly compatible mates might refuse.

Support - would love to have much ofnthe information all in one place.

The one thing I'm on the ropes about though is including Spriter's Alts in the encyclopedia entries for their respective breed (as they're 'one of a kind' variants and they don't "breed true" [meaning you'll never get a Blue Shimmerscale even from a 2g egg from Jewel for example])

If on the Breed page, they should have a note stating "This color variant is ONLY available to the original spriter(s) of the dragon". Though personally, I'd rather see all the SAlts with their own 'bonus page's section of the encyclopedia (easy storage and you can see them all without needing to visit each breed's page)

That would be good. Though some spriters don't want theirs in the wiki - maybe the same would apply in the encyclopaedia ? then you'd end up with some but not all...

Even if it's just the sprite and no code, name or owner information about it?

It's a matter of seconds to work out whose sprite isn't showing, as we all know which spriters were responsible for each. Not giving us that info would be horrid - I'd far rather see the artists get credit for heir work and leave the special sprites out of the encyclopaedia.

... except Soulstones.

There's always an exception somewhere XD

I'd be okay with SA not showing at all in the Encyclopedia. After all, it's nothing that any player can get from just playing. It's also probably not as easily explained within the boundaries of Valkemare lore

I'd be OK with that too. For the same reasons. Otherwise someone is SURE to start asking why we can't have them.

Yeah, I forgot about Soulstones. Some things are better forgotten ! but there's no SA for them either, of course.

That would probably be the best solution (leave it to the Spriter to decide if they want their alts on the 'bonus page').

Though I agree with Ruby Eyes that it might be wise to leave off the spriters name/link to the dragon [help prevent spam...though you're right it is easy enough to figure out]

Personally, I'd leave spriter alts out altogether. People can't get them, and they don't breed true. There is no need for a page on them.
