We just had a fun news report about the priorities of people of some countries when hamstering:

- Germans: toilet paper and pasta

- French people: red wine

- Dutch people: cannabis (long queues before the coffee shops were forced to close)

- US people: guns and ammunition (many first time buyers, too, they reported)

Also in the Finnish news yesterday so I've got some additions.

Sweden: rice, pasta, minced meat and snus

Estonia: potatoes and garlic

Austria: toilet paper

Russia: preserved meat and fish, pickled cucumber and buckwheat groats

Pasta and alcohol seem to be popular pretty much everywhere. Sadly, in the report it wasn't revealed what we Finns prefer when hoarding. As expected, though, our bottle shops have been doing quite well. According to another report, on the other hand, the supermarkets have been out of toilet paper, soap, pasta, crushed tomatoes, instant mashed potatoes and canned pea soup but the sales have been higher in almost all product categories. The only thing we didn't buy as much as usually were flowers.

For Austria missing products may add oil, rise ,pasta and flour. And off course the cheap conserved foods

Before 2 days i asked in Lidl when they will have a delivery of flour, and the answer was " I have no idea ".

Here where I am the shortage is mostly for disinfectant alcohol.

Also is cabin fever a thing? Day 4 and this is driving me nuts.

Yes, cabin fever is a thing.  Try to get your mind on something else.  Try reading a good book.

Read a good book. Watch a good movie. Heck, watch a bad movie and laugh at it. Do a jigsaw puzzle. Build with Lego. Learn a new craft, or make stuff of whatever craft you already know (origami for me). Roll those coins you've been meaning to roll. Do all the random projects around the house that you never have time for. Stay off the internet!

Of course, we aren't on house lockdown yet, so that's easy for me to say...

One can always start a new hobby like drawing/painting or writing. Study a new language or fresh up one you learned earlier. (Which reminds me, I really should review all of my old Japanese lessons as I found that I gradually forget the kanji I learned -_-')

Find new hobbies that don't require you to get out for supplies.

Watch animé and then scour the internet for goog fanfics. Maybe write some yourself. Play computer games. Pay for a small server and pkay with your friends or family. Or, if you do not live alone, try board games, card games and so on. Do some exercises for body health. Maybe try new recipes.

Make sure you're getting some light and air, as well. Even if it's just sitting by an open window for a little bit. I've been working from home for a few years, and made sure that my desk is by a window just so I could have some natural light in my day.

Also, if your school/work situation has gone online for the time being and you're spending a lot more screen time than usual: I highly recommend checking out some browser extensions to help with eye strain. I use Dark Reader to adjust the contrast/color levels of web pages, saved me from a lot of migraines when I started working in web development. :D

With nothing else to do atm I've just been working out. If I'm gonna go out, might as well go out (slightly) more buff than before 😂

Well, it happened here. As of 9 a.m. tomorrow, we are on lockdown, too. At least, so says the second pdf we were sent (the first one was from Singapore - the policeman who sent it out should have known better!).

As Trystan would say, proofread, THEN post.

Most of Germany isn't locked down yet, but it's just a matter of time. Several states here already warned people that they *might* order a lockdown soon, nd our political leaders are going to declare *some* new measures in the next few days.

Considering the fact that there are numerous idiots just ignoring the recommendations, I think an official lock down would only be sensible.

I mean, I remember there was a TV report yesterday that showed that there were still idiots making barbecue parties in the park, one pack of morons racing dangerously through the streets while sitting on the roof (!) of their car, young people socialising because „they live only once“ etc. I fear that there really needs to be an officially declared curfew after all. One couple was interviewed at one airport as they wanted to fly in the holidays even now. When the reporter asked them whether this wasn‘t a bit risky, they replied „But the carrier has a duty to get us home, so we don‘t really worry“.

Well, let's hope they get quarantined before they can leave the airport at their destination...

So you can't go to work now?  Or do you have to take care of the animals?

I have two animals to feed at my shop so I will go in to do that, then send emails out begging for funds. We are a charity, so with no funds from my shop and reduced vet visits in general, we are going to run out of funds very quickly. I have my own office space and computer there so can easily do the social distancing that is mandated.

The whole world is pulling together to fight this global threat.

Breweries In Ireland, Spain, Sweden, France, Scotland, the United States, and other European countries have switched their production lines to making hand sanitizer since there is a world wide critical shortage.

Christian Dior, Guerlain and Givenchy, announced it would help French health authorities by manufacturing hand sanitizer and providing it to them free of charge. The parent company, LVMH, said it would use the production facilities of its perfumes and cosmetics brands to produce large quantities of sanitizer.

In Italy,  Ferrarri and Fiat Chrysler are exploring ways for their companies to mass produce ventilators, also in world wide demand.

In Italy on Friday the 13th 250 Italians died of the COVID 19. It seemed like the worst thing that could happen. In the last 24 hours Italian hospitals report that 427 more have died of the disease, bringing the total COVID 19 deaths to over 3400 in Italy.

May all who have died from every nation rest in peace, in the arms of the angels.

That's a lot of deaths.  The news says that Italy has the worst outbreak and the most deaths.

I wondered if any car companies would try to produce ventilators.  I'm glad they are trying.  I hope the US auto makers try the same.

@Classycal

Actually I heard it first about the US car makers that they offered to produce ventilators two or three days ago.

Indeed but please do bear in mind (for your own protection) that soap and water is MORE effective than hand sanitiser.

Quote

But the scientific answer as to why soap works to protect us against COVID-19 is a technical one. Soap–whether it’s all natural, hand made, liquid, bar, or foamy–has a particularly molecular makeup, made up of what are actually called “soap molecules.” Soap molecules possess both hydrophobic (water-averse) and hydrophilic (water-attracting) properties. When introduced to water, the water-attracting parts of the tiny soap molecule point outward and, in turn, are able to dissolve fatty substances and lipids (this is why soap is so great for cleaning dishes)

So don't panic because Purell is out of stock.

And the WHO has been debunking some myths - a useful page when you read that drinking lime water or something will help (no) or that water will wash the virus into your stomach where it will be killed by stomach acid (also no.)

Another city in NRW, nearly half a million of population XD Kind of between olympe and Astreya, on a certain train line.

This is indeed a small world - I seem to live in the same city Gluria works at and am currently at my parents' home in a town very likely the same one Ruby Eyes is living in. XD

I was supposed to fly on vacation to Crete on Tuesday with a friend (which is why I traveled to my parents' town, my friend also lives here and there's a large airport nearby), but we obviously cancelled the trip. Now I'll stay here until the drama is over... At least I have some time to work on my Master thesis now. 😕
