@Lysian

I'll keep my fingers crossed that you will get vaccinated ASAP!

Here the vaccinations are still going too slowly, plus there are continued problems with the AstraZeneca vaccine as the companie doesn't deliver the amounts it originally promised. *sighs*

Having the same problem with vaccine doses here as well @Astreya. Not enough people are getting vaccinated here and the rollout has been very, very slow. My cousin now has to wait 16 weeks instead of 4 between her first and second dose of Moderna because the government is scrambling to get as many people their first dose as possible, we just don't have enough to go around. I work in a grocery store and now that some restrictions are being lifted I find myself becoming increasingly anxious as to when I'll finally be able to get vaccinated. There is a new vaccine rollout coming sometime in March in my province but it is unsure if essential workers like restaurant or grocery store staff will make the cut :(

Once again, congrats to everyone who either got the vaccine or was able to get an appointment for one, and best of luck to anyone still searching.

@Lysian America's safety nets are so sparse, I'm sorry that you've been struggling like this.

I'm really hoping that we can vaccinate faster than the virus is evolving-- I cannot believe that our leaders decided that this was a safe gamble to make. A year in, you'd think that you'd have gotten used to the undercurrent of uncertainty, but new twists keep coming.

That's so typical!  I should have had my vaccination tomorrow, but yesterday Germany decided to join the Netherlands, Belgium and several other countries to stop vaccination with the AstraZeneca vaccine which was supposed to speed up vaccinating the under 65 year old people.  This means my appointment was cancelled and there was no word when I'd  get a new one.

It appears as if there were some people who got blood clotting in the brain, but so far it is unknown whether it was just coincidence and bad luck or if it was caused by the vaccine. I really wonder why there were apparently no problems with AZ in the United Kingdom, or if they just didn't shout out any problems from the rooftops.

In any case, if you look at the fact that in Germany there were 113 deaths in a certain time frame after a corona vaccination (from 9.66 million vaccinations altogether) and there were 73 516 deaths from Covid (from 2.58  million recorded infections), the risk would be worth taking even if the 113 deaths were indeed caused by the vaccination.

But if you look more closely at said 120 deaths, you will find that the 113 persons who died were between 46 and 100 years of age and their average age was 84 years of age. A death was considered to be connected with the vaccination when it happened between one hour and 19 days after the vaccination.

20 of them actually died from Covid as they were already infected when they got their jab. 43 of them died from pre-existing illnesses they had or other infections. In 50 cases the cause of death was unknown (the PEI currently tries to get information about their causes of death). So now you have 50 persons left whose cause of death might be the vaccine. In any case, the PEI stated that the number of deaths in the group of vaccinated people was even below the normal statistical rate of deaths without a vaccination.

That was if you take a look at all vaccinations (AstraZeneca, BioNTech and Moderna) in Germany.

The AZ decision was taken after 7 recent severe complications (blood clots in some brain veins, 3 of the affected persons died) from 1.6 million AZ vaccinations altogether.

And meanwhile the infection numbers rise and rise...

-----------

As of today, Tuesday, March 16, 10:30 GMT+1, my home town (population 211 000) has 331 (+9) active cases, while 7133 (+16)  people are considered to have recovered. 297 (+3) persons sadly died.  765 persons are currently quarantined. All in all there have been 7761 (+27) people who suffered from Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The number of newly infected people per 100 000 citizens in the last 7 days is 93.9 (-3.4).

Currently 51 (-1) persons are treated in hospitals, with 2 (+-0) of them in intensive care, 1 (+-0) of these needing artificial respiration.

All in all there have been 79 369 Covid-19 tests in Oberhausen.

Sorry to hear that. :(

We have the Astra-Zeneca here and so far our PM and medical people are still vaccinating with it.

I'm asthmatic and got my first dose of Astra-Zeneca a couple weeks ago; I gotta say the vaccination programme is about the only good thing about UK's covid response.  As for side effects, had some relatively mild soreness of the arm and a slight fever the night of and the next morning, but other than that absolutely nothing to complain about.

Well, I would have taken it, too, if the doctor would have assured me it is okay for me to take it as I have an allergy against raw chicken eggs, and every vector vaccine is produced using raw chicken eggs. When I was a little kid I almost died from the small pox vaccination and ever since no doctor dared to vaccinate me for anything any more due to this allergy problem.

I would take the risk if they could assure me that they have better methods of cleaning the substances nowadays, otherwise I'd expect that giving me one of the brand new mRNA technology vaccines would be way safer (after all, these are put together completely differently with no chicken eggs involved at all). Unfortunately I was put into the group of people for the AZ vaccine as there currently is no choice, but one of course gets to talk to a doctor first, and in the end it's the doctor's decision what will be done.

With the current stop of the AZ vaccinations, this is moot anyway of course.

Update: I just stumbled over this paper where the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut detailed their reasons for the suspension of the AZ vaccine:

Quote

1. Why was vaccination with the COVID-19 vaccine AstraZeneca suspended?

A specific form of severe cerebral venous thrombosis associated with platelet deficiency (thrombocytopenia) and bleeding has been identified in seven cases (as of 15 March 2021) in temporal association with vaccination with COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca.

(1) It is a very serious disease that is also difficult to treat. Of the seven affected individuals, three individuals had died.

(2) The affected individuals had ages ranging from about 20 to 50 years.

(3) Six of the affected persons had a particular form of cerebral venous thrombosis, called sinus vein thrombosis. All six individuals were younger to middle-aged women (see above). Another case with cerebral hemorrhage in platelet deficiency and thrombosis was medically very comparable. All cases occurred between four and 16 days after vaccination with COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca. This presented as a comparable pattern.

(4) The number of these cases after vaccination with COVID-19 AstraZeneca is statistically significantly higher than the number of cerebralvenous thromboses that normally occur in the unvaccinated population. For this purpose, an observed-versus-expected analysis was performed, comparing the number of cases expected without vaccination in a 14-day time window with the number of cases reported after approximately 1.6 million AstraZeneca vaccinations in Germany. About one case would have been expected, and seven cases had been reported.

(5) The younger to middle-aged population affected by the severe cerebral venous thrombosis with platelet deficiency is not the population at high risk for a severe or even fatal COVID-19 course.

(6) In addition to the experts from the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, other experts in thrombosis, haematology, and an adenovirus specialist were consulted with the details of the reported cases. All experts agreed unanimously that a pattern could be discerned here and that a connection between the reported above-mentioned diseases and the vaccination with COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca was not implausible. After an overall review and consideration of the above facts, the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut recommended that vaccination with the COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca be suspended in Germany as a precautionary measure in

I'll be part of the eligible general public group to sign up for vaccination in my state starting April 5th. My boyfriend, too. The frustrating thing is that, for whatever inexcusable reason, he's not considered an essential worker despite the fact that he has worked this entire pandemic. The business he works for never closed during the closures we had that limited which businesses could be open and which couldn't. Our state ordered non-essential jobs to close down for a period of time; his place of work was one that stayed open and running. By that alone, he should have been considered an essential worker.

Mine stayed open as well, but same here, I don't believe we count in the vaccine schedule as essential workers.

I need to find the sign-up link...

i've just started going to the Rite-Aid website to see if the stores near me happen to randomly have any appointment openings.  so far, no, but i've only been going to the site for the last three days XD

in my state (PA) grocery store workers are listed as essential workers.... but even though i'm on the register at a craft store (we did close for about 2 months last year), that's not essential.  i mean, NO, you don't need craft supplies.... but all the paints and candy melts keep flying off our shelves. XD

@Lysian

I'll keep my fingers crossed that everything will turn out fine for you anyway!

As for the others  - also fingers crossed that you will get your jabs ASAP, too!

In the EU, the EMA gave a press conference earlier today where they re-affirmed that the AstraZeneca vaccine was safe to use and efficient.  German Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn declared that the vaccinations with the AZ vaccine will be continued ASAP after there was a health warning about a CVST as possible rare side effect added to the information and direction for use.

It appears that they want to resume the vaccinations tomorrow. Sounds about like proper Murphy's Law that my appointment, which was "cancelled without replacement", was due last Wednesday. So now I have to see to it that I will get a new appointment ASAP...

Update: As things look, I will probably get a new appointment for next week. *sigh of relief*

Hubby got an email invitation on Wednesday from the county Health Department to set an appointment for his vaccination. He went to the website, filled out the required information, picked his site and day. Now he is supposed to get an email today with his specific appointment time. I have gotten nothing, yet, even though I registered both of us the same day. I will be patient, though, because they did confirm that they had gotten my registration. I was more concerned to get hubby vaccinated anyway, because he is diabetic and over-weight.

I have my 2nd dose on the 27th. In April everyone here should be able to sign up for the vaccine.

The rollout has been terribly inefficient, and not getting to the people who need it most, but I'm very glad we're all able to get in line, now.

Today there will be another conference between federal government and the Länder about the "new Corona strategy", which will just be the old strategy of course. The big problem is that people are fed up with the lockdown and start to demonstrate against it. Unfortunately they don't seem to realise that they make things even worse by it.

@Lagie

Good luck!

I have my appointment tomorrow in the vaccination centre of my home town, and I am very curious if they will really vaccinate me.

I got all the paperwork for an AstraZeneca jab, but it is likely that I can't be vaccinated with that (or only with some extra safety measures). So it is possible that they either send me home as it is too risky, dig out some dose of the BioNTech vaccine (which would be my favourite outcome), of inject me with AZ and then monitor me for a little longer or so...

Extra safety measures? Do you expect to react to it?

My cousin, who's a medical doctor and who was one of the first people to receive the vaccine here, is going to pass by and check on me Friday morning.

I was in one of the last age groups that were still vaccinated with the compulsory small pox jab and I had severe complications and almost died from it. As I am allergic against raw chicken egg white, I have a problem with classic vaccines that are produced using chicken eggs. That was why I was so enthusiastic to learn about the new mRNA vaccines which are produced using a completely different technology.

Ah, makes sense, then.

I have an ibuprofen allergy but my cousin assures me the vaccine shouldn't cause me any problems.
