Not really a fan of the Pyrovar - the pose looks uncomfortable, even painful, and those arm spikes just make no sense. The arm facing us looks anatomically incorrect to my eye, and there's also a huge area of the wing facing us that is shaded the exact same color for the bulk of the area and it's very noticeable.

The Black Truffle Dragons, though? Absolutely love them - they're beautiful. I love their descriptions as well, though I do wish their necks were less... sectioned. I love their little purple antlers, too. 😍

EDIT: I think the reason the Black Truffles look unpolished is because the dark color scheme doesn't leave a lot, and they're supposed to look oily and smudgy, which is something most pixel artists try to avoid. The Pyrovars, however, I completely agree they look like they weren't ready for release - it seems to me if they were in DR someone would have told them to go back to the sketching phase with a sprite with anatomy issues and an awkward pose like that. 😕 I'm kind of glad for the crit hell of DR now, it definitely makes for a very finished looking product after all the running around.

Love the look of the Black Truffles, the description a little bit less. So... OK they're RL truffles. But then I don't really like any of the "only share their oil with those they deem worthy of this gift, those possessing a pure heart and selfless spirit" to be an owner u gotts to be an A+ hooman. But like, everyone's gotta catch them all anyway.

As for the Pyrovars, the pose was a decent idea, something I don't think any of the other dragons have, but dang do the back legs not look ok. And idk I'll probably get them confused with the yellow-crowned for a while- they're more Yellow, Yellow-Crowned are more blue...

It's not a pose, they're in the middle of a jump! Ever watched a cat turn direction mid-jump? :D

Eh, I meant pose as in "that they're jumping" but because they're jumping toward the screen, but they're also jumping sideways which makes it look awk.

Maybe what bothers me is that it looks like we're looking up at their belly, but down on their head.

Loving the Black Truffle. Not a big fan of the Pyrovar, but I suspect that is a matter of personal taste.

Thanks to Mysfytt and JOTB for these additions to our collections. :)

I really don't understand how people are seeing these as "unfinished" somehow and even in need of "revision"?

Cats generally only do this when they're jumping straight up into the air - it would be very easy to change direction then. However, the Pyrovars look like they are twisting at the beginning of a jump.

See this cat? And this cat! And another, for good measure.

Their legs do not lag behind. One leg is even lifted. The Pyrovars look like their hindquarters are completely just... dangling. And their front half is twisting. It doesn't even look like a mid-jump turn.

Awww I love them both. <3 They both hold their own unique beauty! Thank you TJ and the spriters. ^^ The Pyrovar kind of remind me of Astrid's dragon, Stormfly (the heads, specifically). Love their stripes on the insides of their wings, love the elbow spikes, love the color scheme. And the Black Truffles.. Oh man, I love those purple horns (my favorite color, ha). I like their pose and love their 'shine'.

Wonderful release. ;w; Thanks to everyone who made it happen. ^^

Good morning and hello adults! I love the Black Truffle.

Doesn't look like a turning jump to me. The body doesn't appear to twist at all, and if the leg on our right is supposed to be lifted, it would be a much stronger pose to exaggerate it more, rather than it being barely above the other leg. It looks like it's supposed to be a pounce to me - the body is straightly forward, the head looks focused, the legs are outstretched as though they just pushed off on a surface. Problem is it looks more like this than like this. Maybe the pose looks awkward because it doesn't really know what it wants to be? The legs are a bit too bowed to be pouncy but are still overall symmetrical, the body curves a little but is overall stiffly straight... I think the arms and wings look good though.

OMG, they both look so gorgeous! Definitely going to be getting me some more Black Truffles. Thank you so much, TJ09 and spriters! Your work is awesome!

I love the Black Truffles, but I agree that the Pyrovars need some work. Overall, they look pretty good, but the biggest problems are the lack of shading on the front wing, and the weird twist in the ankles that pushes the soles of the feet together. I think it would be relatively easy to fix, but I'm no pixel art specialist so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wow those glassies are ugly. And Pyrovar sounds like some machinery for brewing a hot beverage. I kinda knew I wouldn't like it (because of color scheme I'm not necessarily fond of), but their anatomy seems way off. This presumably was a good idea and not very good execution. But I see they have some amateurs here, so good for them.

I'm positively surprised by mustys (Truffle, who would have thought), their hatchlings were bulky and a bit plain, adults however look pretty good. And the subtle rainbow is back!

Anyway, if Truffles will be as common as they were in this past couple of days, I could fairly easily catch some for you. I was afraid that they would be so hard to get, but they're really aren't that much.

Let me guess...you got an A+ in  constructive criticism.

Not my favorite dragons, but I like them anyways! The Black Truffles look cool, and I'm sure the Pyrovars look especially great in lineages. Thanks spriters and TJ for the new release! ^_^

Oh wow, did the Truffles get a sprite update? They have a much more pronounced rainbow effect now. Looks nice.

But I do second people saying they look a bit rough around the edges. I think it’s an artistic style thing, but compared to some of the recent releases we’ve had (florets, freckles, tatterdrakes, leodons) they just don’t seem to have the same level of detail and polish. (I also have mixed feelings on the yellow back legs—I do get the lion mid leap effect, but something seems off, somehow.) Feels weird considering how intense DR crits have become—the Freckles were getting nit picked half to death for a good while even when the sprite was 99% of what it was finally released as. I sort of wonder if the absence of some of our biggest artists (Birdz with rl, Odeen quitting) has taken a toll, or if there’s a disconnect between what TJ considers done and the artists moderating DR consider done.

Again, certainly not that either of these new sprites is BAD (I love the new intense rainbow sheen and the colors on the Yellows as well), but the bar has been set so crazy wonderful high that anything the slightest below it seems lacking, perhaps to an exaggerated degree.

This, so very. very much. I was going to point out pretty much the same thing about the Pyros. When I first looked at the sprite, I was all, "How in hell did this get approved by any artists?" The maw looks like it ends somewhere in the middle of the skull, where the brain should be. The pose of the near and far wing is totally different, as if they were made up of differing body parts. Both arms and legs look oddly crooked, and neither limb looks like its equivalent on the other side. Personally, I'd say this one needs some serious editing.

The Black Truffle, on the other hand, is one sprite I actually like very much. I was rather dubious about it after seeing the hatchlings, but this is a nice surprise. (Is it only me, or do they actually look like a hybrid from alt Black and Albino?) I wonder if they'll cause luminas to shed their scales when breeding. It would kind of make sense.

Oh no, you misunderstand. We are kidnapping Truffles and milking them for their tasty perfume oil. We are evil overlords. Yes the only give it willingly to good people, but that doesn’t mean we can’t TAKE it. Just like their eggs. Muahahaha! >D

@Alrexwolf that kitty jumping for the butterfly is adorable. Murderous, but adorable. :’)

I don't like any of that "pure hearts only" nonsense either, it's one of the things I don't like about floral crowned dragons (even though that's just superstition) It just seems like a way to say MY DRAGON IS AMAZING AND YOU SHOULD LIKE THEM without actually doing that much.

Pure of heart means nothing these days, in the barest sense it is a biblical thing but these days no one really goes into detail of what they're adapting that into and everyone just uses it as some amorphous form of niceness, it's a buzzword basically.

Actually these dragons are probably hypocrites when you think about it. How many poor people trying to keep a roof over their head have come to them only to get judged for minor things and turned away, while the dragon that literally secretes a way to help them with no apparent use for it calls THEM selfish and impure?!

...

Actually that's kind of perfect for dragon lore, considering the greed and all, head-cannon forged :D

Maybe they're actually just like those unicorns from gravity falls and use "purity" as a buzzword to avoid giving out the oil:

"Oh I would give you some this stuff I have a ton of buuut....*brainstorming excuses to get rid of the annoying apes*...You have to be...Pure! Yea, Pure. Can't give it away to anyone who isn't pure of heart and selfless and considering that you came to me for material gain and mildly annoyed me in the process i'd say that you're not pure 1-dimensional kindness OR selflessness beyond anything survivable so no oil for you!"

(Though constant harassment for some stupid oil humans have no use for other than perfume and money is also kind of a terrible life so I understand where the truffles would be coming from when doing this kind of thing)

------

Now onto my thoughts on the other big whopper in the description:

"Black Truffle dragons are one of the rarest breeds"

Rare? RARRRE????

RAAAARRRREE HYPEEEEE AGAAAAIIIN

I really hope this isn't gonna be "dis derg iz rar" *three of this "rare breed's" eggs block the biomes 5 times a day every day*

I absolutely hate when dragon descriptions say they're rare when they're actually not, it's one of my biggest peeves in a dragon concept.

So i'm either gonna come to LOVE this dragon more than almost any recent release for actually being a rare for once or hate them more than any other breed because of the false hope and descriptions full of lies! I don't want to hate them so I hope it's the former.
