Setting

It is several hundred-thousand years into Earth's future, and things have changed significantly from the world that we know today. Time has not been kind to the world, turned to ruin by the doings of the human race. Wars of the past, and greed from large companies have left the world a nearly barren wasteland, with small groups of humans struggling for survival. The planet is dying; the sun has grown larger, warming the planet. The outcome of the previous wars and waste have left a majority of the planet with the inability to grow natural vegetation, and what can grow naturally is tough, spiny, and inedible. The last groups of humans are living out wherever they can, with the most coveted locations being near sources of water.

With humanity on the brink of extinction, there are no longer any large cities, with the majority of the remaining humans living in small areas known commonly as settlements. Some are larger than others, and have unique names to them, though the vast majority are simply nameless. Some settlements have been formed in old sports stadiums or office buildings, and still others are more organized, being located on small farms, with individual homes for those dwelling there. The only real consistency between settlements is that they all number three hundred people or less.

The land isn't the only thing that has undergone drastic changes. Humans as well have been twisted and turned by this harsh environment, many of them being born different than what would be considered normal. Some changes were outward, for example, sharp teeth like a shark, or extra [functional] limbs. Other changes weren't so easily seen, and only showed up later in life, such as being able to manipulate objects with the mind, or communication with animals. Some groups welcomed these people, while others shunned them and spurned them as unnatural, casting them out of their groups to fend for themselves in the wastes. With human settlements being so few and far between, not being within the protection of a group may as well be a death sentence.

Harsh living conditions and human morality aren't the only things that people have to contend with. There are other humans out there as well, ones that roam the wastes in bands, picking off anyone they can find and destroying them. No one really knows what happens to those caught by them, but the bones found along some of the trails between settlements tell stories of cannibalism. Travel between settlements is almost unheard of, but when it does happen, it is strongly recommended to travel fast, travel in a large group, and to only travel during the day.

The remaining remnants of humanity have settled into three distinct groups:

*The Purists, who believe that to be unchanged and unaffected by any kind of the aforementioned "mutations" makes them superior to all others.

*The Unlclean, those affected by strange mutations and powers.

*The Lost, roving bands of those that have lost touch with their humanity, and live in small groups, hunting other humans and preying upon them as if they were wild animals.

Plot

A small group of people is living in one of the larger Purist settlements, commonly referred to as Wildflower Farms. As the name suggests, it is located on a farm, where the main thing grown is various bell peppers, as well as potatoes, and a hearty form of beet root. The settlement consists of two hundred and fifty-four people; all men, women, and children of various ages. There is no official leader, though the majority of the people there look to a man called August Stein, whose family has been living at Wildflower Farms for as long as anyone can remember.

Living within this settlement, there are several people with hidden abilities. They were all around several years ago, when the settlement banished a mother and daughter out into the wastes. The girl had been born with very pretty wings, like those of a dragonfly, and the mother had refused to have her given up and culled to keep the settlement pure, choosing instead to leave with the baby girl. For that reason, all of these individuals have kept their own abilities hidden, until one day, they discovered one another by accident. Word spread quietly through the settlement to very specific sources, and all of those unclean came together to make a plan to leave the settlement together, to go out and search for a new home where they would be accepted, and not have to hide away least they be banished. The only way they could find one another in the settlement is by a small marking they'd leave on the walls around the settlement where they would meet up; a small drawing in charcoal of a dragonfly.

He is quick to help out where needed, and is most often seen with a friendly smile, especially for children on the farm. He has a kind nature and is quick to shy away from any potential conflict, preferring to try and solve problems with words.

Other: Volunteers as a teacher at the small school on the farm, teaching art.

Quote

Username: Toasttt
Character Name: Hilda Frost
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Appearance: 5'7", Long brown hair, onyx eyes, and lightly tanned skin. She has an average build, slightly fit with lean muscle. She has a scar around her right palm.
Personality: Hilda is an observant person who prefers to watch from the sidelines rather than be the focus of attention. She's often lost in thought, more engaged in others' perspectives than in direct communication. While she doesn't shy away from talking, she's bad at explaining things. Unless something involves her (directly or indirectly), she prefers to stay out of people's business and remain uninvolved in a situation. If there's a problem involving her, she tries to figure out the root of it and confront it if possible.
Ability: If she looks at someone, she can see through their eyes their "perspective," which, while it mostly refers to what that person sees, if the person is focused on their thoughts or feelings of an item or person, she can see that, too. She can't see with her own eyes her surroundings when she does it.
Other: She's good at cooking.

Quote

Username: Mikasa 361

Character Name: Jehan Durand

Age: 19

Gender: Male

Appearance: Jehan stands a bout 6'2" with a muscular, yet lean frame, Just like his sister, Jehan has toffee colored skin, but his hair is jet black. It is straight, and oftentimes Jehan keeps part of his hair tied up in a bun. His narrow eyes are dark, and he has a very angular face. He has many piercings- a bunch in both ears (helix, rook, daith, tragus, you name it), and if you look at him while he speaks, a silver tongue ring which he is quite proud of.

Jehan often wears comfortable clothing, but usually leans towards the punk aesthetic as he does so. His clothing items of choice are dark jackets, long sleeve shirts, slim jeans and boots.

Personality: Jehan is a bit of a rebel, often getting himself into minor mischief, but thanks to his parents being very supportive and understanding, people fail to notice that behind the punk exterior lies a polite, friendly young man who loves making friends. He also enjoys baking with his sister, because it's just plain fun and he likes to eat cookie dough.

He is protective of his baby sister, and if anyone tries to mess with her (if she doesn't get to them first), he knows how to kick some ass. Is necessary, he will render you unconscious is it means Evonna is safe. As for his friends, he cares about them just as much, but will not go to such extremes.

Jehan is a bit of a flirt, but usually likes to reserve that for occasions, as he can tell when someone does not wish to be given that sort of attention. He makes sure that whoever he's talking to feels comfortable about him, not like they want to pepper spray him. Reading is a fun past time for him, yet one may usually see him whittling a little piece of wood with his carving knife. He also has a greater pain tolerance than his sister, just a bit of a fun fact.

Ability:  Fire breath

Other: Jehan really, really loves food.

Character Name: Evonna Durand

Age: 16

Gender: Female

Appearance: Evonna has a round face and narrow hazel eyes. She has more of a pear shape, with a B-cup breast size, but her shoulders are slightly broad. She has toned arm muscles. Her hair is medium length and in tight caramel brown curls. Often times she will wear weave, braids being her style of choice. She has small pearl earrings in her lobes, one set. Evonna's skin is a light toffee color. She stands about 5'7".

When she's out and about, Evonna typically wears a variety of different clothes, typically crop tops, skinny jeans, loose T-shirts, shorts, skirts paired with leggings, and either sneakers or tall boots. Sometimes she'll dress like a punk. Usually she wears her hair down.

Personality: Evonna is a rather tomboyish, reserved girl who typically spends her time alone or with a small group of friends. Very rarely does she make friends, and is not necessarily looking to do so. Her temper is rather short, and she is more than willing to get herself into a fight when provoked.

Don't allow yourself to think that her silence means she's plotting your murder, though. Evonna is the kindest, gentlest soul you've ever met. When you get close to her, expect her to be the mom friend of the group, and for her to give you things like its Christmas. She's a bit of a punk, often listening to alternative and punk bands. She absolutely enjoys music and is often seen with earphones in her ears. Sometimes Evonna watched soap operas when she was home alone (a guilty pleasure) while noshing on her mother's white chocolate macadamia cookies. She was a diligent student, and you would also find her studying in her spare time. In school she typically didn't contribute to the discussion unless it was something she was passionate about- History or music. She also kickboxes, which helps control her temper. While most people vent, Evonna will punch something. But under that, she's just a shy girl who doesn't want to cause problems.

Ability: Ice breath

Other: She attacc but she also protecc

Hello :)

I read over your thread and I see everything is all very organized. Grammar and story all look fine too for the most part. I'll quote the sections that have a small error.

some settlements have been formed

Some should be capitalized as it is the beginning of a new sentence.

All should also be capitalized for the same reason.

Other than that, the rp seems to be fleshed out fine and can be approved.

My bad there! I typed this all out at my work, so a few things might have slipped through the cracks. I've fixed the errors, though!

Life finds a way. A statement truer now than it had ever been when it had been uttered on a phrase on the silver screen, a time  now lost to human memory. That phase in Earth's history had long since passed, and this new era that had been ushered in was harsh, so harsh it seemed as if nothing should have been able to live here, let alone attempt to flourish. Humanity, however, like weeds growing through a sidewalk, had managed to somehow survive in an environment that should have killed them. Dotted through the land where once mighty cities stood, there were now only small groupings of humans, some larger than others, but none very large overall. It was simply easier that way; the recourses that were once abundant so long ago were now along non existent, and these small groupings were all they could support without giving way and drying up completely. By all means, even what little was left should not have been able to last as long as it had, but it did, and so, live struggled badly, but continued.

It was within one of these settlements that Abel Nightingale had been born, and remembered living his entire life here. He knew nothing about the other settlements of the world, other than the few people he had met over the years when they had come here from other settlements looking to trade goods and other resources. Everything that he knew about the world had mainly come from living here, in one of the larger settlements run by the Purists - and all of that learning could be filed into two key points: to be pure was good, to be tainted was bad. Tainted, of course, as everyone understood it, was to display something that was not strictly human in nature; anything unusual, strange, questionable, that was not allowed, and was quickly snuffed out. Anyone alive at the time remembered vividly the fresh reminder they had all gotten of what happened to those that were deemed unclean....

About five years ago, a little girl had been born in the settlement, usually a cause for celebration. Abel had been teaching at the time, outdoors with the children of the settlement all age four and older, teaching them how to make paints from the plants that grew around the settlement. There had been screaming from the middle of the settlement, and word spread like wildfire that the girl born was an unclean, having been born with wings. The trial had taken place just a day later; all of the adults in the village were there, watching as the mother of the child held the baby in her arms and begged the elders to let her baby live. From where she was standing, it was easy to see the little girl's wings; clear long, looking just like those found on dragonflies. The woman had been given two choices then - either give the child up to be culled, or to take the child and leave the settlement forever. The mother had chosen to leave with her baby rather than give her up to be killed; that day was the last anyone had seen or heard of either of them ever again.

There had been other instances as well, though none as recent as that. The elders of the town were often the ones to carry out the sentencing, though that was all they were looked up to for. Other unclean had met a more unfortunate end when they were discovered, and it was believed that Wildflower Farms was one of the only Purest settlements that prided itself in not being overrun by the Unclean; at least as far as they knew. Abel knew that there was at least one "Unclean" person living here that no one knew of - himself.

When he was a child, Abel had discovered quite by accident that he had had an unusual ability; his mother had been trying to grow flowers inside the house, to make it feel more bright and happy inside their otherwise plain looking home. They had constantly died, until one day Abel had put his hands on the soil and had prayed for them to grow...they had, and so rapidly, that his arms were soon covered in curling vines and blooms. His mother had discovered him, and told him he needed to keep this all a secret, or else they would be forced out of the settlement. It had stuck with him how serious this was, and he had kept his ability to himself all these years, using it only in the privacy of his own home, where he now lived along since his mother had passed. He considered himself lucky that it was an anomaly that could be easily hidden; had it been something obvious (like the wings on the baby) he would have been easily discovered years ago.

Though it was always in the back of his mind, he didn't live in constant fear and paranoia. Instead, he had grown up to become a productive member of the community, helping with the cooking and the washing (and staying far away from the outdoor plants), as well as volunteering his time teaching the children of the community to express themselves through creative artistic outlets when school was in session. It was a peaceful life, and though he longed to be able to use his innate ability to help the community, he would never risk it, not wanting to be forced to leave the only home he had ever known.

---------

That morning started the same as any other; Abel woke early and dressed, tying his hair back before heading out to help cook and serve breakfast for the community. He got there early and made sure that everyone in line had something to eat before getting a plate for himself, sitting with a few of the others who had volunteered their time that morning to help feed everyone. He chatted and enjoyed the meal, helping to clean up afterwards, not minding using his time to help out wherever he could. After cleaning was done, he headed down to the building that had been being purposed as a small school to go and help out by volunteering his time with the children.

It was a relatively nice day out, and so for his time he brought the children outside to draw on the sidewalk around one of the buildings with chalk, something he had learned to make out of drying a type of clay with some other materials. There weren't very many colors, but there were plenty of chalk pieces to go around, and he sat outside with the kids, smiling and drawing with them, telling them stories to pass the time as they drew together.

Hilda Frost walked down the street, glancing at people every once in awhile, wondering their stories in secret. It was like watching a collection of fish behind the glass of a fish tank; curious about them while never hungering to be a part of their life, or at least, not in a direct way. She strolled by, observing several children scribbling on the sidewalk with makeshift chalk in-hand. For a moment, she halted, putting her eyes into one of the children's minds. Watching from a child's innocent eyes made her want it all over again. Back when things were simpler. Not simple—never simple—but simpler.

She flinched to return to her own sight, pulling her body out of the daze it fell into. Don't do it for too long, or they would know. All of them would know. The only reason she could play it off is by not allowing them to last long, and also with her reputation of "falling into her train of thought too deep." She fumbled with her bag, and started scribbling nonsense on her notepad. Pretend you've come to a solution, that you've found an idea that's just what you need. An idea for a recipe, or something.

They could never know. She hated that, but if she didn't go through with it, what then? Going outside of a community alone was suicide.

Unconsciously, she scribbled deeper and deeper in her notebook. Incoherent lines and circles, hastily stretched across the page. She rose her head to watch a couple of people pass by her. Her curiosity bloomed in her, but— no. Too many times consecutively was a no.
