I'd like to ask how do people obtain rarer breeds of dragon. Do you just keep refreshing the cave until an egg pops up? (I started playing the game a few days ago and so far it seems like a lot of fun!)

That's basically the idea, yea. You just keep hunting the cave until you catch a rare! They appear less frequently, but you can find them.

 

You can also pick up 'bred' rares in the abandoned page, sometimes. And people trade for them!

You can also get rares via trade(if you have something to trade), and one of new features, you can buy eggs in market. It still need weeks of play though.
