Same Names

Recommended Posts

So, I was thinking

Dragons are identified by their Random ID instead of their actual names, and two dragons on the site cannot have the same name.

Maybe dragons could have the same name? I would've liked to have a serious scroll, with actual names, but everything I could think of was taken.

The dragons are identified by their rID anyway, so it wouldn't actually matter if two dragons had the same name?

I feel like this would ease up on the hair-pulling trying to think of creative names only to have it used already causes.

I kind of agree but if you type dragcave.net/view/n/[name of dragon] it takes you to the dragon with that name, so allowing double up names would be difficult since the name as well as the code results in a url that can be used to find the dragon. If that makes sense

I suppose dragcave.net/view/n/[name] urls could become a directory of all dragons with that name but it would require some recoding

Well, the url thing (...view/n/name_in_here) is one reason.

Another is that there are way too many of each sprite around that cannot be distinguished apart from looking at their individual codes. The only ways we have to customize our dragons is by naming and describing them. And only the names actually show in the lineage.

Third, because names show in the lineage, it's much easier to spot inbreeding that if duplicate names were allowed. Now, if Midas Dorkface is in the lineage twice, you know for sure the egg is inbred. But with duplicate names, you couldn't be so sure at all.

Fourth, I once used to play on a site where duplicate names were allowed. I accidentally used the same names over and over, at least over time. It was confusing, to say the least.

Fifth, some of our communal lineage projects (Thuwed, Dorkface, Dusk...) depend heavily on the family name of the CB generation. Having those names as duplicates could ruin a lot of people's lines.

I'm 1000% with olympe. For those desperate to have a "special" name and who can't bear misspellings, it's easy enough to have a scroll pre or suffix. The OP, for instance, could call them all "rai's xxxx"

Isn't capitalization also a thing? Like ~

Dragon and dragoN is looked at as 2 different names instead of 1 ?

I don't THINK so. Just a sec...

No - I just tried one of mine with all lower case and it still brought up my dragon.

For interests sake, there's an allow same names but not on same scrolls suggestion here: https://forums.dragcave.net/index.php?showtopic=142137

I don't mind dupe names. We did come up with a lot of different solutions to the name url in previous threads.

EDIT to add: I do think it's important to note that I don't name a lot of my dragons now, and that probably won't change even with duplicate names. Which is why I don't have strong feelings about this.

I do realize that changing the searching that some other people mentioned would require recoding, but duplicate names don't inherently cause chaos. Just look at Flight Rising.

There could also be a random name generator implemented. Of course, that would also require a lot of coding, but it would help reduce nonsensical names and give some "realism," if the dragons have names that could only exist in a world like Middle Earth or Azeroth. Now, yes, people can go find a fantasy name generator elsewhere (as I do, though I use scientific names). But it could be a lot more convenient to have it right on the site. (Maybe the site coders could use the script from a different random generator, if the original coders allow it).

I've only been on this site for, like, a month tongue.gif Feel free to ignore me.

I wouldn't mind duplicate names. We'd probably end up with dozens of dragons named Smaug or Toothless, but is that really a problem? Letting people get the name they want is a positive, I think, even if it's the same as some other dragon or dragons.

An on-site name generator is an interesting idea, as long as its use isn't mandatory. I don't think there is a need for "realism" in dragon names, except to players who want that. Personally I don't delve into the RP side of things, and those that do probably have widely differing views on what constitutes a proper, lore-consistent name.

I agree with olympe -- I also kind of like having special names and I like being able to snag cool names and it is just cool to know that my dragon's name is unique. I like having unique names, it makes my scroll feel more special. And it's just been this way for so long

That said it wouldn't be a game breaker or anything if duplicates were allowed. I just would not like it as much as I do the current system.

It's not too big a deal either way.

People already do create song lyrics with dragon names. If you want a repetition for some part, just use different spacing or divide the names differently.

Like, uh, for example "Happy birthday":

Happy birthday / to you happy / birthday to you/ happy birthday dear / *insert favorite human's name* happy birthday / to you.

I'd bet money that those names are already taken, but it's possible to make a lineage like that. Just saying. Even with a song as repetitive as that one.

Indeed. I have a friend who has the most EXTRAORDINARY Christmas carol on her scroll.... The spelling is out of this world laugh.gif

I find the no duplicate name rule is one of the things that makes naming dragons fun; and for those who dislike it there are always names like "B o b", "XxX Bob XxX" or "Bob Bobberton".

This lineage of mine has a fine example of this - there are two dragons named "There will be Time", using punctuation to be technically different. As an aside, I used the /n/ page to find them on my scroll.

Because of this unique naming system I feel like a cheater inserting more spaces to get the names I want^^; And actually I'm even less creative with names because of it too^^; E.g. I have all my Witchlights named Grealt and Triss, or Witcher and witch and one couple of Yennefers. Just because you prevent the same names to be taken it doesn't prevent anyone from getting a dozen of Toothlesses... tongue.gif

As for the name searching link, it's not even really part of the game in a sense... you know it only if you check the forum or Wiki but the game itself doesn't let you know about it. I just found out here. So it doesn't sound convincing:P and I think a search engine that can search based on parts of the names would be more useful anyway:) Like a ctrl+f just for the entire game instead of one browser tab.

For inbreeding there is an inbreeding checker I've seen, also you can verify by hovering your mouse to see and compare the codes. Anyway, if the unique names differ by 1 additional space or a misspelling like I for l you can't see if it's really inbred or not anyway by just looking at the names.

to not take away the 'fun' from being the first to name a dragon "X", a gamewide search option would be a sollution if unique naming was no longer a thing. You can use the search and see how many results you get, OR when you try to name your dragon, the system sends you an information that "2 more dragons are currently named like this", so if you get "0" you can be satisfied that you got the unique name first.

In plenty of other games of this kind the names don't need to be unique. It's realistic. Just because you're named Jack Smith doesn't mean another mother surnamed Smith somewehre in the world can't name her son Jack either... smile.gif

Personally, I prefer the idea of freeing up names that are taken on accounts that haven't been used in ages to having duplicate names. It wouldn't be special to find that you can name your dragon after your favorite character in your favorite book/movie/etc if there were duplicate names, because then of course you can do it. And if it really matters to you, you can figure out a way to modify it and get the name. Maybe it will be "Toothless the kind dragon" instead of just "Toothless", but you'll have it.
