Sweetling Breeding Change

65 posts in this topic

Dragcave is a collectible website, where we can collect different types of dragons. Most true hardcore hunters want to have every sprite for every dragon on their scrolls. It's possible for every dragon except one: The Sweetling (and the Snow Angel, sorry). Most of us have the normal, pink sprite. However, there is a black, "sad" sprite, that is only available for people who had a bug on the release. It's currently impossible to have both, quoting the wiki:

All Sweetlings automatically change to a scroll's coloration regardless of their lineage or whether they are eggs or hatchlings. Traded Sweetlings thus become the coloration of the scroll they arrive on, and may change from Alts, become Alts, or remain the same depending on their destination. As a result, scrolls may only obtain Alts or normal coloration and never both.

My idea is that breeding Normal Sweetling X Something would give a normal Sweetling egg/dragon, and breeding a Sad Sweetling X Something would give a black Sweetling egg, so we could have both sprites. Sure, people with Sad Sweetling could be mad, since their dragon and lineages would be less rare, but they still have the CB version of it, so they still have some rarity, and remember Sweetlings are only available on Valentine's Day. Here's a list of Pros and Cons about it, I'll try to edit it often.

Pros:

Players can have both sprites.

Sad Sweetlings lineages easier to make

"Raffle" in the AP: Is this Sweetling egg normal or black (Hype)

Cons:

Black Sweetlings rarity decreased

Black Sweetlings lineages more common

Another contra: makes it impossible to do lineages with alternating colour generations (which has actually been done between players already).

As much as I'd love this it's been killed every time it's been suggested because black Sweetlings are supposed to be special blah blah blah. Never mind that a lot of their owners wish they could share and get pink ones too.

AHEM, anyway. If a change happens and it does happen, I'd suggest that they each have a small chance to throw the other color as long as they multiclutch--and as long as there's some way to know early (maybe "This egg looks delicate and sweet, and smells faintly of dark chocolate" for blackies.)

As the owner of Darklings, I would not mind this at all. I have to pass up most of the Sweetling eggs in the AP because I feel like I would be spoiling the lineage by changing the color. There are lovely lineages made with the Pinklings that I can never have. Edited to make it clear that I love my Alts very much -- I don't regret getting them instead of the pink. I just sometimes envy all the pretty pink lineages I see.

As ADP says, though, this has been shot down every time it came up. The spriter gave up what was supposed to be her personal alt to compensate those who had lost their hard-fought eggs and so some feel that that should be honored by keeping them that way forever.

Aren't sweetlings scroll-coded, just like snow angels?

If so, it might be (next to?) impossible for TJ to undo this coding without a lot of effort involved. Because each and every single sweetling that isn't regular would need to be declared an "alt" by hand - or some kind of algorithm.

They are. And even if this was done, think of all the past ones that would not be affected. I can hear the screaming from here.

Well, it is up to TJ to decide if it is possible or not. wink.gif

And I don't really know why it would be a problem that past ones weren't affected. Up to now we have bred and raised them with the understanding that we would only get one color. I would be more upset if it would change the past ones too.

I'll never really understand how this had ever happened...

The glitch could have been compensated much better than with forver ongoing spriter's alt for the unlucky/lucky(depends on perspecitve and also the player's preffered colour) players:/ This could have been handled by mere giving CB Sweetlings to those affected by the glitch so they simply can get back what they had lost to the glitch, it would be still better if they e.g. got the CB limit for these rised to 3 as an additional apology. Or at least if they got 1 black sweetling each that would produce pink ones regardless where it goes... this would still be a lot... The thing that happened to the Sweetlings back then seems like a completely spontaneous move somehow disastrous in consequences... the glitched players who prefer the pink version are actually punished here, instead of compensated and apologized...

(And I'm not even being bitter for my colour, the pink I have works better for me anyway.)

I personally am against any alts for holidays, exept for the spriter's alts for the spriters... They're messing things around for already strangely working dragons (1 gender, VERY low CB limit, inability to obtain CBs anywhen later, breeding once a year, and so on)... '

I personally really dislike christmas and valentine dragons for how abnormal they are and how they make even the most basic idea of a scroll goal impossible to make... and when an alt comes in it's even worse, you can't collect even as little as 1 of each alt, and also there is no longer an even number of sprites of each gender(these alternate in regular intervals, 1-1 for Vals and 2-2 for Xmas, even the Holly got evened out by the Mistletoes) and stuff...

(ofc not counting the spriters' alts! for obvious reasons!)

But well, the milk has been spilt...

Idk if I support or object more... I have my strong reasons for both, so I'm not siding anywhere this time...

I like my Dark Chocolate sweetlings. I didn't at first, but they grew on me. I have no problem breeding them for anyone who asks. I don't think this should change because it was the spriters alt, and it was a very generous gift that was a special hug for the many people on this forum who got hit by the error and who will probably never win any raffle or other special prize. I've been here so long I missed the Holly by like a week, and the aggravation of knowing I will NEVER get aCB Holly or even a low gen makes me love my "Licorice Kisses" even more. user posted image

Dark Sugar Lover gets bred with my sweetling to create this type of lineage. I would be sad to see the possibility go.

I like ADP's idea of having them possibly throw the other color when they're bred. But, I'm meh about this suggestion. I was disappointed that I didn't get a black sweetling, but I'm very fond of my pink one.

Pretty sure the Artist, Kila has already said no to every suggestion for other players getting the black sweetlings. They were supposed to be her spriter's alt and she donated the sprite as an apology to users who lost their eggs in a very nasty glitch.

I also agree that being able to breed the opposite color (pink Sweets for people who have alts and black alts for people who don't) would be nice for everyone. It would still be impossible for us to create certain lineages, but that's okay. I love the alt sprite and wouldn't mind having both on my scroll.

Also, the original CB alt Sweetlings will keep their special status in this situation.

This. It was very good of her to give up her alt, and we should respect her wishes here.

I wish I'd been caught up in it all and got black ones - but them's the breaks.

The creator of the frill dragons said they would never ever come back and yet they came back,

If thsoe can come back i'm certain it is possible for sweetlings and snow angels can be "unlocked" too

The frills were a different matter. Their creator said - when she agreed to let them out again - that it had been a fit of temper on her part, and that she was over it now. It was the ARTIST said they could be re-released.

The black sweetlings were from an artist who gave up her special one to make up to those affected by the autoabandoning glitch. She has NOT said that they can cease to be scroll related. I think she even said they could not change, but I'd need someone who remembers better than I do to be sure of that.

Kila has in the past been very firm that she would like the Sweetling situation to stay as it is now.

Sweetlings, Snow Angels, Solstice, Prize Dragons... every single time something is not available for everyone it has been A Bad Idea. I do hope that lesson has finally been learned. That doesn't change the past though, which is what it is. It doesn't hurt to ask but we should not expect things to change just because we ask.

Even as a pink owner who loves the alt sprite far over the original, I think that the alt sprite should definitely not be released for other users. However, I do think that alt owners should have the option to collect pinks. Those who prefer the pinks are disadvantaged by their situation - like having a curse forever because of the glitch.

So, if the artist were to agree to alt owners only not being limited to one colour, perhaps it could be possible for alt owners to choose which colour they would like an egg to be? Failing that, a different method: eggs bred by pink parents caught from the AP stay pink, those from trades change to scroll colour. (This would be to allow alternating lineages to be made.)

A way I see to implement a choosing mechanism would be via a BSA; all Alts could gain an alt-specific BSA that changes an egg (or hatchling?) to alt colour, and have all eggs be pink by default. It would wear off through an abandon or a trade, like Influence or Incubate.

Much as I'd like to have a black Sweetling on my scroll, gonna have to side with the others against this. It was a personal alt, given as a personal compensation, and without Kila's explicit approval I don't think that should change.

Normally I am pro-availability for all sprites--even for all lineages--but because dark Sweetlings were a personalized gesture and not a standard event, I think they should remain an exception.

Can I just say that if I knew what I was doing back then, I would be getting the black sweetlings as well? But alas, I didn't and I missed out and I sort of have to agree that black alts should only be for those exclusive people.

Alright, I've been sitting on this for a while and thinking about. So if it's cool with alt sweet owners (and I actually think their say should trump spriter say, as the spriters have their own pretty special sprites - of course the difficulty here is that we only hear from a small group of forum-going, suggestions-visiting, alt-sweet-owners here, so we don't have a very comprehensive overview of how they feel), here's what I would suggest:

Pink and black sweets both have a chance of breeding either pink or black sweets. If your scroll is originally coded for black sweets, you have a higher chance of sweets hatching black. If your scroll is originally coded for pink sweets, you have a higher chance of sweets hatching pink. However, both types of scrolls still have some chance of hatching the other color - just one will be less common for them. Once hatched, the hatchling's color is set.

This would not be as limited as what we have now or what is suggested in the OP. This would allow for users to get both sweet colors. This would allow lineages of alternating and otherwise mismatching sweet colors. The biggest con, of course, would be that you couldn't 100% control what color a sweet hatched and since sweets can only breed true once a year, this could make lineages more difficult/frustrating.

I think the scroll coding should be still 100% in effect for hatching the eggs, but then the hatchling color is permanent. So someone with an alt scroll could hatch eggs and trade them to people, and then get pink sweetlings by trading with pink coded scrolls. That way you don't accidentally end up ruining lineages because of the percentage chances. I have a pink scroll (could have had a black, but I decided not to try at midnight because I knew it would be easier later...), and it would stink to ruin an all-pink lineage by having the "lucky" chance of it going black occur. You can only collect sweetlings once a year, you should know 100% how the egg you're hatching will turn out.

It's a lot how having the three colors each be a 1/3 chance of hatching is not a good way to handle the snow angel alts.

I would support this if we got an in-cave trading center or if forums/cave became integrated.

Yea, that's the only downside. People who aren't in a community where they can find trading partners are out in the cold. But I still don't like the idea of it being random chance. Too many wonderful lineages bred or caught and then ruined because the RNG decided to roll the wrong way. It wouldn't be too bad if it was year round breeding, since you can just try again, same as gemshards. The problem is it's once a year. And someone with a black scroll who wants a pink would maybe have to wait a few years for it to hatch correctly. (assuming they don't have the ability to pay someone with a pink scroll to hatch the egg)
