Posted December 31, 2015 as someone who doesn't play those sorts of games, i found jolly follies tremendously entertaining -- even when it was frustrating! one of my friends didn't start until the final day, so i watched her play through everything at once (and had her brush off many an offer of a hint; she was right, she could do it herself), and was really struck by how impressive and cohesive the whole thing was. my only regret is that i wish i'd spent more time being lost and just wandering around, like on the first day when i couldn't find my house. i'm sure i must have missed some very cool little things, but am nevertheless delighted by what i did manage to see and do. there's no way to pick a favorite, but i visited both the reindeer and quilt (the knitting pillow dragon) often. thank you so much to tj, birdz, odeen, marrionetta, and everyone else involved in the making of the game! Posted December 31, 2015 I think the important consideration here is not everyone has played an RPG, and even those that have might not have the immediate mastery of such. In this case I think it would have been useful to have a more equal playing field where people who play many RPGs don't have an advantage. Even having played RPGs the objectives were clear, but not easily located. For instance it often said "north", and there are several ways to go north, which leads players into a considerable waste of time. For those not used to RPGs, that's could be a big negative. Just a disclaimer; I know this is how many RPGs at their core used to be. You have a massive map, you get some hints, but its up to you to find where to go in the vast landscape. But that kind of game isn't for everyone, and I think its alienated a few people from this event. That's not to say an RPG was in any way a bad idea for an event, just that a few steps might have been useful to ensure that people both hardcore RPG fans and casual users alike could enjoy the event more equally. The most obvious thing I can thing of now is perhaps an arrow or other indicator pointing to where the next objective begins, whether its there by default or hidden under a "show hint" button. Big thanks to the artists, writers and coders. Can tell a lot of time and effort was put into it... Eh I mean, it wasn't onsite, so would be harder for someone unable to google... but the Dragcave wiki helped me out a TON. I was so confused after the first day, because I didn't realize that it meant 12 real-life days and such. (I thought there were like... 12 different games?) But i am glad the ones that could play it enjoyed playing it I never played an RPG before, either, but decided to give it a go anyway. I muddled through.
